Grex Scifi Item 51: Looking for Star Trek fans to hold weekly discussions
Entered by cordell on Wed Jan 18 22:26:14 UTC 1995:

by CORDELL GARRETT
I would like to have Star Trek fans comment on what series you like
the most. I just saw the two hour premier of Voyager Monday night.
One word, excellent!! I especially like their crew, their different.
Deep
Space Nine is cool also. I would welcome your comments.

I think its too early to tell about Voyager, but it did look promising.
It did have the feel the TNG and DS9. Of course, there are those who don't
like that feel so much, I suppose.

#2 of 118 by chelsea on Wed Jan 18 23:19:11 1995:

I really dislike Janeaway's voice. The actor's perfomance is very
wooden. Maybe this will play out as an intentional part of the
character. Or maybe she's just a bad actor.

#3 of 118 by doorknob on Wed Jan 18 23:44:11 1995:

I have been watching Star Trek for as long as I can remeber now. I must admit
thawhile I liked DS9, it seemed, well, not quite Trek, you know? I think
Voyager shows promise. It returns a little more that we all came to enjoy
from Star Trek. Hmm...maybe

#4 of 118 by gerund on Thu Jan 19 00:27:46 1995:

The only 'bad' thing I saw was after the ship gets yanked 70,000 light years
and the crew is trying to figure out what's happened Janeway's hair is
down and 'messed up'. There is a cut away and then we see her heading to I
think engineering and her hair is just fine.
Seems like a bad mistake for an otherwise decent show.

#5 of 118 by steve on Thu Jan 19 02:10:35 1995:

Mary, "wooden" commanders aren't real? The only Navy admiral I've ever
met was just like that--wooden.
Perhaps its a way of saying that women are still having to work harder
than men are to get the same positions. Yecchh.
Then again, Mr. Picard seemed pretty distant many times, too.

#6 of 118 by fireball on Thu Jan 19 03:24:23 1995:

it shows her fixing it at one point (don't remember when, but I saw it)

#7 of 118 by peacefrg on Thu Jan 19 03:26:30 1995:

Oh come on guys. Don't give away any plot points until Sunday.
Up herein North. Michigan it doesn't air until Sunday.
Nobody up here as seen it yet without satellite.

#8 of 118 by aruba on Thu Jan 19 05:58:38 1995:

Probably most captains have to adjust their hair once in a while; though
Picard never seemed to have that problem. :)

#9 of 118 by rywfol on Thu Jan 19 06:01:30 1995:

Hey Peacefrog, you think you got it bad with these guys.. how long d'ya think
before all these reach me in the little ole UK :(
Then again... I guess I'll get to know which ones not to stay in for, if
everyone posts which are good and which not.. hmm, dilemmas, dilemmas.. ;)

#10 of 118 by steve on Thu Jan 19 06:12:57 1995:

When do you think you'll see it? I've never thought before about the
lag in getting USA shows to europe.

#11 of 118 by rywfol on Thu Jan 19 06:21:22 1995:

Well, I'll probably miss it totally till you guys get the reruns.. ;)
It'll probably make it over here in a couple years at a guess.. when hopefully
I wont be.. jeez, what a sacrifice huh.? =)

#12 of 118 by rcurl on Thu Jan 19 06:52:35 1995:

I was disappointed in the first Voyager episode. It seems to be contrived
from a mish-mash of other adventures, with stereotyped crises, and some
very awkward segues - but I expect to watch at least a few more episodes.
Oh yes - I attributed the character Janeway to be a method-acting
creation based upon Katherine Hepburn.

#13 of 118 by steve on Thu Jan 19 06:58:30 1995:

Hah! The interstellar African Queen episode--stay tuned...

#14 of 118 by gerund on Thu Jan 19 09:31:44 1995:

Shameless Comment- you can tell who watchs the show because it's
Star Trek and who watches it hoping for good plots and good
acting of, say, your average network drama.

Re: The captian's hair-
I don't remember seeing her fix it, but she may very well have. I think
the problem I had was why would a captain be fumbling with her hair
when a nice number of her crew were dead and another nice part of them
injuered? Seemed out of place to me.

#15 of 118 by raytlee on Thu Jan 19 09:47:26 1995:

I saw her fix her hair and it did not distract from her command as it was
more reflex than intentional. I like her voice and it was nice when Janeway
smiled. Sometimes I wonder if Riker had some special futuristic gel for his
hair.

#16 of 118 by bcole on Thu Jan 19 14:45:09 1995:

It's pretty bad when the topic of discussion is about her hair! But I
will admit she did have an annoying voice. Sounds like she smokes.
It must be nice to be thrown out of starfleet academy and be a
renegade and get field promotions right up to first officers and
lt. commander. That seems a little far fetched. I wonder what kind
of crew compliment she actually still commands? 10 people out of 110?
I do think the holographic doctor is cool!! In regards to discussions
about Star Trek in general which was the heading before the hair thing
I think that would cool.

#17 of 118 by cyberpnk on Thu Jan 19 17:58:12 1995:

There was recently a special on PBS called 'The Science of Star Trek'.
If any one hasn't seen it; pity. It was good.

#18 of 118 by gerund on Fri Jan 20 03:39:33 1995:

Re.. the 'hair' thing.

I was just making a comment. Go ahead and flame.

#19 of 118 by gregc on Sat Jan 21 00:10:41 1995:

Re: the 'hair' thing.
For some reason I remember it. It got knocked all around in the crash,
which is what you would expect. She apparently has fairly long hair,
which you would want *out* of your way when you're trying to do
something important. So, in the next scene, when she's running down
the corridor to engineering to help fix the frazdoodle that needs
re-cabobulating you can see her shoving her hair back up *while* she's
running. As someone else said, it seemed like a reflex action and
seemed entirely appropriate.

As for her voice, I've seen Kate MUlgrew in many tv shows over the years.
She's always had a very throaty voice, and it sounds like her natural voice.
I kind of like it. I also like the fact that she's also probably the first
Sfemail ST character that couldn't double as a fashion model. She *looks*
and *acts* like a commander.

#20 of 118 by chelsea on Sat Jan 21 01:20:34 1995:

I would describe her voice as nasal not throaty. Demi Moore has
a throaty voice. Lauren Bacall has a throaty voice. Kate Mulgrew
wishes she had a throaty voice. ;-)

#21 of 118 by gregc on Sat Jan 21 01:59:49 1995:

Ok, point taken. But it *is* her real voice.

#22 of 118 by steve on Sat Jan 21 04:35:00 1995:

And she does have that wooden feeling of a commander.

#23 of 118 by raytlee on Sun Jan 22 07:53:33 1995:

Wooden is good, like Siskel and Picard....

<Set anal mode=on>
Re #23: The commander's name on DS9 is "Sisko". "Siskel" is a movie
critic. :)
<Set anal mode=off>

#26 of 118 by cyberpnk on Mon Jan 23 17:43:27 1995:

My wife remarked that Kate Mulgrew's voice sounds like Patty Duke's.

#27 of 118 by otterwmn on Mon Jan 23 18:34:28 1995:

The segues were rough and/or non-existent at times. We liked it and will give
it a try for a few episodes. If you will remember, the first TNG didn't seem
all that strong. My biggest gripe with the silly thing is the music! Go ahead,
hum the 'Voyager' theme; I dare you!
P.S. My husband says Commander Kate is almost as desirable as Gates McFadden.

#28 of 118 by rcurl on Mon Jan 23 22:59:12 1995:

You are right. They are running the earliest TNG on 50, and they *are* rough.

#29 of 118 by gregc on Tue Jan 24 01:07:07 1995:

Agreed. The first year of TNG was pretty awful. By comparison, the Voyager
premier was pretty good. Considering the production crew is the same
people who worked on TNG and DS9, this is not surprising. The problem is
that the cast needs time to settle into/figure out their roles/characters.

#30 of 118 by jep on Tue Jan 24 02:15:05 1995:

I thought she sounded like Katherine Hepburn, too. I didn't think of
The African Queen, though; I thought of True Grit. "Take the helm, Mr.
Cogburn." "Aye, aye, sister!"

#31 of 118 by spidyr on Tue Jan 24 03:45:33 1995:

<sobbing> I missed it! unknowingly realizing it was on in the afternoon,
i watched "jurrasic park" instead...<thinking> how low i have fallen :(

#32 of 118 by raytlee on Tue Jan 24 08:41:29 1995:

What do you think about the second episode? It reminded me of "Far Point
Station". My apology to Ben for misspelling his name.

#33 of 118 by steve on Tue Jan 24 08:56:53 1995:

I thought it was weak, but it does start to build up the
characters, which is good.

#34 of 118 by rcurl on Tue Jan 24 17:38:50 1995:

It would have made a reasonable half-hour show.

#35 of 118 by fireball on Tue Jan 24 19:09:54 1995:

I kinda think that the "quantun singularity" is overused. Admittedly
they've never had one do something like this before...but it was
still kinda annoying (oh great, another singularity). I do like
B'ellana...lots o potential there...the doctor is kinda neat too/....
Though I agree w/kes...he needs a nam,e
just my $0.02

#36 of 118 by nicely on Tue Jan 24 21:38:43 1995:

in the Jan 14-20 edition of TV Guide, the called the doctor
Doc Zimmermann.

#37 of 118 by fireball on Wed Jan 25 03:56:34 1995:

he died...the 'doctor' is a hologram w/o a name...

#38 of 118 by nicely on Wed Jan 25 04:02:29 1995:

I'm certain he is Doc Zimmerman, because I just read an article in
Entertainment Weekly and there is the crew of Voyager and it says
"Robert Picardo Role: Doc Zimmerman, testy holographic ship's
doctor." So, if he is w/o a name now, he will be getting one
shortly or it's a mistake. Who knows?

#39 of 118 by steve on Wed Jan 25 04:53:07 1995:

It was probably one of the little details paramount let go of.
