Grex Scifi Item 41: ConTraption '94, anyone?
Entered by kami on Fri Apr 22 05:35:49 UTC 1994:

Anyone going to ConTraption? I've lost my advance mailing and haven't seen
anything on it in this conference. So here's an item just for that. Would
someone please post the details- particularly where it is, how to get there,
and contact numbers. Who's running this one, anyway?

Troy, MI.

#2 of 40 by kami on Fri Apr 22 15:00:55 1994:

thanks. that's a start. now I have to find someone who wants to split a
room or something. sigh.

#3 of 40 by curby on Thu May 5 17:31:05 1994:

So kami, did you enjoy yourself?

#4 of 40 by kami on Fri May 6 04:31:51 1994:

well enough. Didn't get to much programming or enough music, but I saw the
people I wanted to see. For a change, Michael was able to be there with me
the whole weekend. Timothy sure had a good time. Gareth did pretty well too,
considering the number of new places and people. Then there's the problem
of catching up on sleep... Who else was there? What did you like best?

#5 of 40 by curby on Fri May 6 17:36:31 1994:

I didn't get to go myself, but I hope to make the next one. I am glad to
hear that you had fun.

Do you know when the next one is?

#6 of 40 by dc on Sun May 8 22:55:00 1994:

I think the next local convention is Baccanal in July. It's a relaxacon
with NO programming. Just hand out and see the people you came to see.

I believe MarCon is in Columbus on May 14-16.

#7 of 40 by curby on Mon May 9 02:04:11 1994:

Is there one in october?

#8 of 40 by kami on Mon May 9 06:28:39 1994:

you know, I kind of like the sound of a "relaxacon" these days...

#9 of 40 by pegasus on Thu May 12 17:08:50 1994:

Anyone else, besides Snark and I, going to the MST3K ConventioCon Expo Rama
in Sept?

#10 of 40 by aruba on Fri May 13 03:22:20 1994:

I was thinking about it, though not too hard. How are you getting there?

#11 of 40 by kami on Fri May 13 03:45:27 1994:

what, when (more specifically), where, who?

#12 of 40 by curby on Fri May 13 08:15:03 1994:

Uh, ya... all those w's for me, too!

#13 of 40 by robh on Fri May 13 11:55:07 1994:

It's in Minneapolis in September, which is why I can't go.
Can't even think of beginning to afford it. >8(

#14 of 40 by pegasus on Fri May 13 15:08:48 1994:

Rob,

It's only $45, plus hotel.

        Pattie

#15 of 40 by pegasus on Fri May 13 15:09:54 1994:

Mark,

We're driving to MN.

#16 of 40 by robh on Fri May 13 15:54:13 1994:

pegasus, I work at Meijer. I can't afford $45 *or* hotel,
never mind both. Unless I can get my dad to pay, like he
did for my recent Cedar Point trip. >8)

#17 of 40 by kentn on Fri May 13 16:26:22 1994:

Go-fer, go-fer, go-fer...

#20 of 40 by aruba on Sat May 14 17:55:16 1994:

Pattie, are you getting Forrester's Package, Frank's Package,
or Torgo's Package?

#21 of 40 by pegasus on Mon May 16 16:13:02 1994:

We purchased Forrester's Package, and I'm looking forward to the costume
ball! :)

        Pattie

#22 of 40 by wasichu on Mon May 16 22:42:11 1994:

Whats the diff between the 3 packages??

#23 of 40 by aruba on Tue May 17 02:46:10 1994:

From "Satellite News" (formerly "The Binding Polymer")
Spring 1994 edition

Forrester's Package: This little beauty includes 2 nights at the Radisson
South, where the ConventioCon takes place; admission to the convention,
including the glittering Costume Ball, admission to the Live show on
Saturday night Sept. 17, a handsome ConventioCommemorative T-shirt and an
extra-special chartered tour of Best Brains Studios! ($45 plus hotel,
which is $79 a night. The hotel's in-house channel will be showing never
before seen footage of MST3K.)

Frank's Package: Your basic convention package, without the hotel room,
T-shirt and tour. Admission to the ConventioCon including the Costume
Ball, and admission to the MST Alive Show on Saturday night. ($45)

Torgo's Package: This modest little ditty is really nothing more than a
ticket to the Live Show on Friday. ($20)

I think Pattie's got the right idea. If you're gonna drive all the way to
Minnesota and you can afford it, Forrester's sounds like the way to go.

#24 of 40 by wasichu on Tue May 17 02:50:34 1994:

 sounds kool, if somewhat expensive...

#25 of 40 by pegasus on Tue May 17 22:48:41 1994:

I should have our SCA garb done by then (considering I need it in July<grin>)
so Bill and I will go as escapees from the Ren. Fest. Huzzah!

        Pattie
PS, did anyone else catch Tom and Crow on the national news today? They
were included in the newsstory about the Peabody Awards on CNN.

#26 of 40 by pegasus on Sat May 21 00:48:05 1994:

We got a letter yesterday saying that there's a waiting list for Forrester
packages, apparently. We have to indicate how many rooms we need, so the
hotel knows how many people to accomodate. Those who don't respond get
reduced to the Frank Package status, and their room goes to someone on the
waiting list. This deadline is the 10 of June, so anyone who signed up
for the Forrester Package and got the letter, send it in soon or lose your
place in line! :(

        Pattie

#27 of 40 by pegasus on Thu Jun 23 01:51:49 1994:

News from Best Brains is that the Forrester Package sold out in 5 days!
Yipes, that's fast!

        Pattie

#28 of 40 by aruba on Thu Jun 23 05:43:45 1994:

Did you get yours ok Pattie? Are you still going?

#29 of 40 by pegasus on Thu Jun 23 16:59:21 1994:

Mark,

Yeppers! We've got our confirmation from the Radisson as well, so we're
all set. I understand detailed itineraries will go into the mail in July.

        Pattie

#30 of 40 by hope2 on Sat Jul 2 07:19:15 1994:

Sorry this is a little off-track, but I was wondering if anyone had
info on the con happening in Indianapolis this weekend, and if so,
could you please send mail either to me here or at hope@m-net.arbornet.org

Thanks bunches!

Next week is the MST3K ConventioCON Expo Fest-a-Rama! Hooray! Bill and I
are ready, and our costumes are too! ;)

#32 of 40 by aruba on Sat Sep 10 13:28:00 1994:

Have a great time, Pattie; and give us a report on that never-before-seen
footage they're showing in the hotel (as well as the rest of it)!

#33 of 40 by pegasus on Tue Sep 20 15:45:50 1994:

THe MST3K ConventiCon Expo Fest-a-Rama was wonderful! Lots of fun and
excitment!! We got to see the actual offices and sets where MST3K is
produced! Got to meet the stars and get their autographs! Got to
watch an MST3K show live! Gypsy, Tom and Crow all did their own songs...
Frank danced on the stage in a skin-tight black leotard... Mike lead
the audience in a rendition of the Breastica Boobular song. The movie
was This Planet Earth. The theatre was very nice...old, ornate, lots of
detailing. The glittering costume ball was a smash! I think the best
costume was a recreation of the monster/robot from the Phantom Creeps...
the big round face with large ears. There were lots of Forresters and
lots of Torgos. There were a number of Brains that Wouldn't Die too.

All in all, it was marvelous! Stupendous! Great! Fantastic! I'm gald
we went!

        Pattie

#34 of 40 by aruba on Wed Sep 21 13:04:24 1994:

Sounds like a lot of fun. Did you get to see any never-before-shown
footage in the hotel? I seem to remember that the brochure said they
would show some on the hotel's closed circuit channel.

#35 of 40 by pegasus on Wed Sep 21 16:03:59 1994:

Yeppers... the old footage was a hoot! The original season looked
really poor compared to how things are now. Crow didn't really look
very good...Gypsy was called Gypsum and looked horrid, and Tom looked
even worse than the rest..not to mention their voices!

        Pattie

#36 of 40 by dam on Thu Sep 22 02:50:14 1994:

you mean before the comedy channel got them?
I remember something from the "making of MST" commercial
(well, half hour commercial) with a little footage from
when they were just on the public access channel.

#37 of 40 by robh on Thu Sep 22 03:48:02 1994:

I've got a few episodes from "season 0" (their KTMA episodes),
but from later in that season, after they;d worked out the kinks.

#38 of 40 by aruba on Thu Sep 22 12:20:53 1994:

I've seen some of those (on Rob's tape, in fact!). In the beginning it
seems to have been more of a "let's show a bad movie" show, with the
comments being sparse and sort of a sidelight. That makes sense; if you
didn't have any attachment to Joel and the bots yet, you might find their
interruptions more annoying than funny. After you get to like them, of
course, they are the whole point. :)

#39 of 40 by dc on Tue Sep 27 14:00:43 1994:

Did they explain why they seemed to have shorter hair when they
were put on the Comedy Channel?
