The Stilyagi Air Corps is the local Science Fiction fandom group.
Recently I started an email mailing list for announcements and
discussions for or about the group. If you are interested in joining
the mailing list, send me a request to stilyagi-request@hamjudo.mi.org
Let me know your favorite mailing address. I will be out of town
for a week, so don't expect a quick reply.

Tell us a little more about the group. Is it just an e-mail type
group or do you hold cons and whatnot? Where did the name "Stilyagi"
come from? What sorts of discussions are discussed and what sorts
of announcements are announced? ;)

Does anyone know/remeber Hugh Daniels, or any one who works with the
Xanadu project. If so, do you know of an e-mail address for any of
the above ?

jumps off and onto the ground. He poises his laser-sighted machine gun over
his shoulder.>

The Stilyagi are also responsible (if that's the word) for ConFusion, which is
held every January, somewhere around here. (Did they decide if they're going
to leave the area, like ConClave is going to?) Greetings to all who know me.
(You've been warned.)

#9 of 29 by robh on Thu Sep 15 22:09:40 1994:

Huh? When/why is ConClave leaving???

#10 of 29 by dc on Fri Sep 16 11:16:46 1994:

#8 may be refering to ConClaves discussion to have their convention in
Lansing this year. However, they decided to have it the the Southfield
Whats It Hotel.

#11 of 29 by lkt on Mon Oct 24 23:43:31 1994:

ConFusion 10101 will once again be held at the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza
in Romulus, near Detroit Metro. The date is January 27-29, 1995.
Pro GoH is Pamela Sargent, Fan GoH Bob Tucker, TM Kathe Koja,
Artist GoH Laura Butler, Science GoH Geoffrey Landis. Membership
rates are $20 until Nov. 15, $25 until Jan. 15, $30 at the door.
Checks payable checks payable in U.S. funds to AASFA/ConFusion. For further
info: ConFusion, P.O. Box 8284, Ann Arbor, MI 48107.

The Stilyagi Air Corps is no longer a U-M student organization,
and hasn't been for at least three or more years. Nor did the group
start out as a student organization. In the beginning (1973) it was
a group of Ann Arbor fen who met at the World SF con in Toronto
in 1973 and decided to continue meeting when they returned home.
The first Stilyagi meetings were held at a book store called
the Cloak and Rocket. They sought recognition as a student
organization so they could use university facilities to hold their
first convention, the A2 Relax I Con, held in the ballroom at
the U-M Student Union in February 1974. They maintained their
student status so they could continue to hold the weekly Stilyagi
business meetings in various meetingg rooms around campus. All of
us early Stilyagi members considered the student organization
status as nothing more than a "front" which allowed us to access
free meeting rooms and use of university copy centers for printing
the club fanzine and other publications. During some of those
early years, virtually none of the active Stilyagi members were
currently enrolled as students so we had to draft the occasional
"friend of a friend who was a student to sign the necessary
paperwork to keep us "legitimate."

Word is that ConClave will indeed be moving to Lansing in 1995.
Aparently they've signed a contract and everythi Many of the
attendees at the recent ConClave (Oct. 7-9, 1994) seemed less
than enthusiastic at this prospect.

#12 of 29 by kentn on Tue Oct 25 15:34:16 1994:

What is the reason for ConClave moving? Were they unable to find
a decent hotel (i.e., got fed up with the Southfield Days Hotel, or
whatever) or did they just feel that more fen would attend if the
con were in Lansing?
  Or ???

#13 of 29 by robh on Wed Oct 26 02:25:17 1994:

I can't believe they thought attendance would improve in
Lansing, it's only marginally closer to Chicago, much much much
further from Detroit, and not particularly closer to any
other big population base. Sure, the folks from Grand
Rapids will have an easier time, but how many of them
are there?

I will be very surprised if ConClave doesn't shows a huge
drop in attendance because of this. Goddess knows I won't be able to
go this time.

#14 of 29 by gregc on Wed Oct 26 17:14:49 1994:

They didn't choose lansing because of it's location or being "nearer"
to anybody. They choose lansing because it was the only place they could find
a decent hotel to hold the con in. There just arn't any decent hotels
in the A^2 detroit area left that can hold a con of Conclave's size.
Everybody is sick of the Days/whatever hotel at 9mi& Southfield.
.]

#15 of 29 by robh on Wed Oct 26 18:08:02 1994:

That's a good reason. Of course, after a few cons in Lansing,
the attendance will go down far enough so they can come back
to Detroit, until they get too big again...

<robh's head is spinning>

#16 of 29 by pegasus on Wed Oct 26 21:37:17 1994:

Rob,

There are buses into Lansing, and trains too. It takes about 2hrs from
Ypsi to Mason, back when I was in college. Mason is close to Lansing,
so you could be there in 3 hrs, easy. It was $10 each way back then, but
I have no idea of the prices now. Lansing has a good bus system, too,
and if the show is near MSU, there's a big bus depot there.

#17 of 29 by robh on Thu Oct 27 02:23:43 1994:

Pattie, you seriously overestimate how much time and money I'd
be willing to spend on ConClave, especially since Confusion
is about fifteen minutes drive from my house. Rather than
spend money on a bus, I'd just save it and use it on the
Dealers' Tables at Confusion. >8)

I'm sure the hard-core con-goers will still go to a Lansing
con, but many will not.

#18 of 29 by pegasus on Thu Oct 27 15:21:35 1994:

ROb,

I didn
t realize there were two shows of similar type. :)

#19 of 29 by alx on Thu Dec 8 18:25:09 1994:

#18 (pegasus) may not know there are four cons in the area.
Clave, Fusion, Traption, and Bacchanal (if you want to call Bacchanal
a con; YMMV).
As to how long this situation obtains, it's anyone's guess.
Aloha!

#20 of 29 by kentn on Thu Dec 8 18:27:05 1994:

I see Ditto was held here in Ann Arbor, too.

#21 of 29 by alx on Thu Dec 8 18:30:17 1994:

Thing is, Ditto (like Corflu, the other fanzine fans convention, passes
from place to place. Corflu is in Las Vegas this year, and damned
if I know where Ditto's going to be next.
I missed this year; the Post Office only gives me one weekend off
out of every six, and this one wasn't it.

#22 of 29 by kentn on Fri Dec 9 00:32:29 1994:

Yeah, I know...just thought I'd mention it, since it was local this
year. We got a chance to pick Eric Lindsey up at the airport so he
could attend Ditto. He puts out a fanzine called Gegenshine (I
probably misspelled that...) that is fun to read.

#23 of 29 by lkt on Fri Dec 9 06:36:57 1994:

Yeah, you misspelled it. Good guess. It's "Gegenschein
(and trying to type over this damned line noise, I probably just
misspelled it, too). Sorry you and Suzi weren't able to actually
attend Ditto. See you at ConFusion?

#24 of 29 by kentn on Fri Dec 9 12:57:49 1994:

Hmmm, haven't heard yet. I'd sure like to go, though!

#25 of 29 by diznave on Tue Nov 4 09:48:53 1997:

I've heard a lot about all different kinds of cons (especially Star Trek
ones), but have never been to one. You all realize that there are people at
these things, selling all kinds of stuff. Yeah, you know where I'm going with
this, don't you? People who make a living selling paintings and jewelry at
these things are nothing but .........con-artists.

#26 of 29 by tpryan on Mon Nov 10 05:24:08 1997:

        Wake up you item!

check out Paul Hass's pages at http://www.hamjudo.com

Check out the Stilyagi pages at http:/www.hamjudo.com/confusion.

The de-Hiltonized hotel 9 mile in Southfield for the last
convention had converted at majority of it's rooms into condos, much
to the chargin for that year's con-goers. The move to Lansing/Holt
does provide ConClave with a very good hotel. More rooms than they
can provide programing for. Safe walking distance to breakfast,
lunch & dinner. ConClave will return to Lansing in 1998, this time
not on Yom Kippor in the same weekend.

Found my ConFusion of Winnebagos flier,
January 23, 24 & 25th 1998 at the Van Dyke Suite Hotel & Conference
Center in Warren, MI. All rooms are curretnly held for convention
reservation (810)939-2860 until 1/10/1998. That's near the GM Tech
center by 14mile on Van Dyke in Warren, MI. Better URL:
http://www.stilyagi.org/cons/confusion.html
Pro Guest of Honor (GOH) Connie Willis, Fan GOH Mary Ellen Wessels
(http://www.mewsic.com), that's former GREXer (mew); Artist GOH
Jane Irwin (local Ypsilanti Artist, I got a print of her's on my
wall); Science GOH Dr. Marvin Minsky; and ToastMaster Larry Tucker
--yeah, that guy that posts here every so often.

Paul Hass's hottub on the internet (as seen on channel 50)
can be e-mailed at hottub@hamjudo.com and it will return it's
current status. You can microwave to his cats via his site. Paul
was a mover and shaker at GREX in it's early days, and responsible
for that aaa60 terminial I first GREXed on, way back when.

These fan run conventions are far differnt from the
cash-cons put on by Creation. Much more fan involvement at a
fan run convention. Much more oppurtunity for participation and
creativity at a fan run convention.

He was?

#28 of 29 by tpryan on Sat Nov 15 04:34:11 1997:

That or was very GREX freindly in it's begining years. I think
Paul helped make sure GREX was available in one the incarnations
of computer rooms at a ConFusion or ConClave.

#29 of 29 by mta on Sat Nov 15 07:27:11 1997:

Yup, he was very Grex-friendly, but he was too busy to be more involved than
that.
