Grex Scifi Item 3: Scifi Channel, or a vidscifinut had a wet dream and decided to turn it into a commercial venture.
Entered by tcc on Mon Sep 21 05:01:09 UTC 1992:

Anyone going to get the "SCIFI CHANNEL"?

It sounds, like, totally awesomme duude!

24 hours a day of Lost in Space, Battlestar Galactica, ST:TNG, etc ad
infinitum.

Call your cable company and request it!

It's coming to Columbia Cable in Ann Arbor. If you tune to the channel
that's going to carry it, you get a countdown -- at the bottom of the
screen, the number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds to go is
continuously updated, against a constantly changing surrealistic
background.

Lost in Space? Battlestar Galactica? Well, I can do without those, but
hopefully they'll do 50s scifi flicks, Outer Limits, and (dare I hope?)
Space Patrol.

And they're not going to bring it to Ypsi until October 1st. Time for
a letter to the FCC, I think...

#3 of 47 by glenda on Tue Sep 22 12:51:57 1992:

I highly doubt that a letter to the FCC will help. They can't force a
cable company to carry any particular channel. Feel lucky that you will
get it on October 1st. They didn't have to pick it up at all.

It will probably start October 1st as that is when the cartoon channel
starts to broadcast and they didn't want to have to add things twice.

No, you misunderstand. CC is moving *slow* in putting the new channels
in the entire viewing area. Someone must have kissed some butt to get
AA to move first. They will get the premiere of the Sci-Fi channel as
soon as it starts (Sept 24?). Us backwater types outside of AA have
to suffer.

I called CC last night and pleaded with them to add me before the startup.
They said they doubted the techs would do it, but they would "leave them
a note". I'll probably try to keep bothering them over the next few
days if nothing happens.

It really is just a matter of typing a few commands in a keyboard, you
know. All the wires are set and ready. I've had them turn on the
Movie Channel while I talked to them on the phone. Took about 5 seconds
for them to flip the switch.

From what is listed in this weeks Ann Arbor News TV Listings, I don't think
you'll be missing too, terribly much. From 8 pm Thursday through Sunday
night/Monday morning they will be showing _Star Wars_ at least 4 times (they
don't show the listings for weekdays so I don't know what they will be
showing from 6 am to 6 pm Friday). It will be show from 8:00-10:30 and from
11:00-1:30 on both Thursday and Saturday nights (that's right, twice a night
separated by a half-hour show called "Sci-Fi"). There are large chunks that
are labeled 'Paid Program', whatever that means (we haven't figured out yet
whether they mean Pay for View programming or one of those 11/2 hr commercials,
since they're blocked in 1/2 hr segments - from 3:30am-8:00am Saturday, for
instance - I am tending to think that they are the latter. I sure hope not.

There are a few interesting old TV series that are listed, a number of them
will be shown twice in the Thurs-Sun segment that is listed for this week.
So far it sounds a bit disappointing.

That's not the point. This is an *event*! And I'm going to miss it. :(

#7 of 47 by terru on Thu Sep 24 03:28:22 1992:

I'm looking forward to Captain Scarlet! Anyone else know about this one?
I was surprised my friend in Boston hadn't heard of the more popular
supermarrionation work "Thunderbirds Are Go!"

#8 of 47 by robh on Thu Sep 24 22:58:26 1992:

I saw several episodes of Captain Scarlet when channel 9 from Windsor
showed them on Sunday mornings. I loved them!

#9 of 47 by jeffk on Fri Sep 25 04:04:17 1992:

It's here! 8pm EST. Previews look interesting. Channel 51 on Columbia Cable.

#10 of 47 by fishy on Fri Sep 25 23:01:54 1992:

Weird. I came home from work yesterday to find all these new channels!
live in Ypsi - wasn't expecting anything for another week or so. Maybe CC's
not so bad...

#11 of 47 by robh on Sat Sep 26 14:45:15 1992:

What part of Ypsi? It may not be long...

#12 of 47 by fishy on Sun Sep 27 23:12:48 1992:

I live on College Place - a couple blocks from EMU. And I still have all
the new channels. Am I special, or does anyone else in Ypsi have the new
channels.

#13 of 47 by robh on Mon Sep 28 00:12:42 1992:

Nope, not here yeat. (I'm over by Willow Run.)

#14 of 47 by remmers on Mon Sep 28 10:41:09 1992:

Enlightenment spreading eastward like an oil slick...

Bad metaphor. Or was that a simile. Bad in any case...

Well, we Ann Arbor types were able to watch the switching on of the
SciFi channel at 8 p.m. last Thursday. Unfortunately, the first
thing they showed was this creaky old warhorse called "Star Wars".

#15 of 47 by hawkeye on Mon Sep 28 14:46:50 1992:

Got to the Hewitt/Packard area of Ypsi on Sunday morning. Very nice.

#16 of 47 by remmers on Tue Sep 29 18:06:33 1992:

Well, the SciFi channel seems to have gotten past "Star Wars" (real
tacky special effects in that one) and into some good stuff like
"It Came from Outer Space", a spiffy 1952 scifi thriller based on
some Ray Bradbury material. It was originally filmed in 3-D, though
not shown in that format on the SciFi channel.

#17 of 47 by jeffk on Wed Sep 30 04:34:13 1992:

Or howbout "Time Tunnel" . Weird pre-show stuff, but otherwise, very
entertaining.

#18 of 47 by robh on Wed Sep 30 15:04:03 1992:

We got it! YES!

#19 of 47 by terru on Sun Oct 4 20:42:12 1992:

What it means to me is that I have to get a converter box now to see
A&E. I've been watching it elsewhere though. Forgot about that time
travel to Atlantis show. Got it confused a moment with the one where
the guy has to pocket watch that says "Good" or "Bad" or something until
he cleans things up.

When are the cartoons on?

#20 of 47 by popcorn on Mon Oct 5 03:45:16 1992:

You got something against Star Wars, John? :)

#21 of 47 by terru on Sat Oct 17 18:59:54 1992:

Voyagers. I saw it advertised.

#22 of 47 by jeffk on Sun Oct 18 01:01:24 1992:

What time is it supposed to be on?

For anyone who's interested, on USA, at 7pm everyday, there are past episodes
of Quantum Leap.

#23 of 47 by terru on Sun Oct 18 16:43:39 1992:

Voyagers on Sunday at 11:00 at least. They were saving Roosevelt from
Billy the Kid this morning.

#24 of 47 by jeffk on Sat Oct 24 02:53:15 1992:

Cool. Tuna and Onions time!

#25 of 47 by terru on Sat Oct 24 17:09:28 1992:

       ? .

#26 of 47 by jeffk on Sun Oct 25 21:05:17 1992:

Inside joke. The first time I was hooked on Voyagers, I was eating Tuna salad
with onions mixed in on white toast. Now, when Voyagers comes on, its the
old Pavlov Dog routine. Now where is that mayo...

#27 of 47 by wnklhmr on Sat Nov 7 19:04:05 1992:

Hiya I'm new here but this looks pretty cool
oh well bye

#28 of 47 by remmers on Fri Nov 13 04:20:15 1992:

Welcome to Grex!

#29 of 47 by vidar on Sun May 23 00:13:31 1993:

What I want to know is when is Sci-fi gonna decide wheter to show Buck Rogers
or Battlestar Galactica in the 8pm. weekday time slot.

#30 of 47 by robh on Sun May 23 00:54:27 1993:

Both. They keep running through the entirety of each one, then start on
the other.

#31 of 47 by vidar on Sun May 23 21:42:35 1993:

Stupidity at it's best...

#32 of 47 by tpryan on Sat Aug 28 05:13:16 1993:

Not really stupidity, just usually cablecaster thinking fare. I would
prefer a show to run once a week, usually I'll find one show or another
to interuprt the week. It would be nice to see Battlestar on Mondays
Alienation tue, Buck Rogers wed, and do on. Then when they have made
there 13-26 week run, move them over two days so I can watch something
else on Tuesday night.

Sunday nights has Sci-Fi Buzz (information show about waht's up and
what shows/books other is coming out. Also on Sunday Nights see
Inside Space with host Billy Mummy (danger Will Robinson).
The Prisoner is also shown once a week on Sunday Nights.

All that runs 8pm-midmight reruns midnight-4am I think. Makes middle
of the night recording easier.
You can get tired of the MCi commercial faster than the special effects.
the Sci_fi channel is owned by USA networks. Quantum Leap will
eventually be shown on SciFi channel, but wisely they are showing
it on a channel almost universaly received by all cable subscribers.
I saw one epesode of "The Invaders"-a Quin Martin production. Won't
be anxiously looking for it again.

#33 of 47 by hawkeye on Mon Aug 30 16:37:01 1993:

Sci-Fi Buzz is really the only show I watch on the Sci-Fi channel. On
the rare occasion, I may turn into an old Night Gallery or Night Stalker
rerun, but that's about it.

#34 of 47 by dana on Sun Sep 12 12:20:45 1993:

If you watch during the day don't forget _Dark Shadows_. They've
just mad a man from expired body parts.

No blond hair and no tan though (I guess you just have to do with-
out in Maine). ;)

#35 of 47 by tpryan on Mon Sep 20 02:00:21 1993:

Okay, what was the winner...The three hour "Dune" shown Sunday or the
four hour "Dune" shown on Saturday. The longer one does have all of
the footage of Patrick Stewart (Picard) in it. What I seen of it thus far
(the first hour) it would not have impressed me about Patrick Stewart's
acting.

#36 of 47 by dana on Mon Sep 27 13:21:56 1993:

As I recall, Dune didn't impress me about anyones acting skill.

#37 of 47 by tatiana on Mon Sep 27 23:39:26 1993:

Personally, I'd be just as happy with Voyagers. I hate history but gimme
Jon Erik Hexum in a toga and sandals and I'll be happy. Lord knows I
wouldn`t remember anything about Spartacus or any of the others otherwise.

#38 of 47 by vidar on Tue Sep 28 02:00:33 1993:

<vidar the lensman whips out his laser, while fingering the cyan lens bonded
to his left hand. His heart fills with nothing but love and a beam of blue
light escapes the lens, slaying the Boskone and going nova above the planet.>

tatiana, your in lust with a dead guy in a sheet? :-)
