Grex Scifi Item 23: Humorous SF
Entered by arthur on Thu May 6 14:09:52 UTC 1993:

I just read "Red Dwarf". It's very funny, maybe even up
to "Hitchhiker's Guide" standards.

I just read _Mostly_Harmless_ by Douglas Adams. Absolutely pointless,
doesn't come anywhere hear "Hitchhiker's Guide" standards. >8)

Have you seen the original Red Dwarf television episodes?

#2 of 73 by cwb on Thu May 6 23:59:37 1993:

Are you two referring to the book, radio series, or tv series when you
speak of the Hitchhiker's Guide?

#3 of 73 by robh on Fri May 7 01:57:07 1993:

Yes.

#4 of 73 by steve on Fri May 7 03:57:08 1993:

Parker Godwin wrote a wonderful book called _Waiting for the
Galactic Bus_. Wonderful reading.

One of my favorite bits of SF humor was "Trouble with Tribbles" on the original
Star Trek. It had lots of classic comedy bits tied together. I always have a
good laugh when I see it. It is kind of sad that ST TNG has not had a good
humorous epsisode yet.

#6 of 73 by aahz on Sun Jun 13 13:21:41 1993:

If you ever get a chance to, see some outakes from the original Star trek the
doors used to be powered by stage hands and some of the best takes are when
Kirk goes storming out of a room, fuming, and he walks right into the door

#7 of 73 by tcc on Tue Jun 29 14:58:58 1993:

There have TOO been some good schtick and other comedy routines/shows on
ST:TNG. Lwaxana Troi is constant humor. Ever read "Q in Law"? IT's a scream.
There was also one show where the dialogue went something like...

"Sheilds are up captain."
"Phasers are online.. no wait, phasers are offline."
"Sheilds are down again captain. Sheilds are up, oops, sheilds are down again.

Troi: In another time and place this might be funny.

I thought the episode "Fistfull of Data's " was pretty funny.

#9 of 73 by vidar on Sat Jul 3 23:15:49 1993:

To qoute Ethan Fleischer: "Woo, as they say, Woo!"

#10 of 73 by aahz on Sun Jul 4 01:30:35 1993:

Ethan Fleischer? Brother of Dan (Fleisch-head) Fleischer?

#11 of 73 by vidar on Sun Jul 4 13:43:08 1993:

Of course, you Idiot! How do you think I knew it would fit in somehow, hmmm?
I think I'm going to go put an anti-matter bomb in the middle of
Saline High School now. Though it'll take out half the city, it's bound
to be funny.

#12 of 73 by vidar on Wed Jul 28 23:56:20 1993:

I just saw a strange movie that had Count Dracula fighting against the
Nazis. Of course he probably doesn't like Nazi blood very much.

#13 of 73 by bap on Mon Aug 9 15:12:12 1993:

The Keep?

#14 of 73 by vidar on Thu Aug 12 16:18:11 1993:

I'm not sure if that was the name of it. My mother was watching and I got
therein the middle of the movie.

#15 of 73 by skeez on Thu Aug 12 17:35:27 1993:

I saw a really bad one a couple weeks back.....Can't remember what it's called.

#16 of 73 by vidar on Thu Aug 12 20:46:26 1993:

Lemme guess, it was on MST 3000, right?

#17 of 73 by robh on Thu Aug 12 21:18:02 1993:

Nope, there's no MST that sounds like that. They should probably
consider it, though.

#18 of 73 by skeez on Fri Aug 13 02:23:06 1993:

Whaddaya mean There's no MST
T subjects that were really bad?? That's the whole point! No, really,
This was not A MST movie......

#19 of 73 by bap on Fri Aug 13 15:57:00 1993:

Yea. Their idea of really bad. Why don't they ever show "The Creeping
Terror." That is THE worst SF movie ever made. even worse than "Plan
Nine from Outer Space".

They showed two movies made from MY personal favorite show as a child and
shredded them. Rocky Jones, Space Ranger was my introduction to TV SF in
the late 50's. It wasn't good by todays standards, but it was better than
some of the hit shows on tv today.

Of course, I still love MST3K!

#20 of 73 by remmers on Fri Aug 13 22:36:59 1993:

The worst SF movie ever made is "Creation of the Humanoids". Trust me.

#21 of 73 by skeez on Sat Aug 14 02:37:13 1993:

This can be disputed......

#22 of 73 by gregc on Sun Aug 15 07:10:43 1993:

Re #19: Bap
Yes! As an afficianado of *way* too many late night movies for *way* too
many years, I agree that "The Creeping Terror" is *the* worst movie ever made.

However:
Re #20: remmers
John, I'm kind of surprised that you thought "Creation of the Humanoids" was
the worst SF movie ever made. While I agree that parts of it were corny,
badly acted, and they suffered from what was obviously a shoe-string budget,
I thought that it was actually an interesting attempt to do real SF, as
opposed to most of the big-budget Sci-fi that are really Westerns/love-storys/
horror/action-adventure in SF drag. While I do agree that *alot* of it was
dreadful, I think it had some interesting redeeming qualities.

#23 of 73 by remmers on Sun Aug 15 21:51:26 1993:

It had a definite flavor of 50's potboiler scifi. Script seemed as
if it had been written by a fairly literate 11-year-old male who had
a complete collection of Worlds of If in his bedroom that he'd read
from cover to cover at least three times. It might have worked
better as radio drama, but if I want an hour or so of talking heads,
I'll watch C-Span.

Actually, "Creation of the Humanoids" probably isn't the worst scifi
movie of all time. It's just the horriblest one I've seen recently.
Right after I saw "Robot Monster" I was convinced that *that* was the
worst scifi movie of all time.

I'll say this about "Creation of the Humanoids", though. Even "Plan
Nine from Outer Space" has similarities to other bad scifi movies, but
"Creation of the Humanoids" seems to be unique in its badness. I've
never seen anything like it.

#24 of 73 by gregc on Sun Aug 15 23:27:31 1993:

Well, then, John, Have you ever seen "The Creeping Terror"? If you want
a movie that is unique in it's badness, that's the one.

#25 of 73 by remmers on Mon Aug 16 00:18:39 1993:

I'll look for it. Can I find it at my friendly neighborhood video
rental store?

#26 of 73 by gregc on Mon Aug 16 06:04:47 1993:

Eeeeuuuu... You actually want to pay *money* to see this thing? Well, if
you're really glutton for punishment, I guess you could probably find it
at a video store, but it's such a bad little 50's SF stinker that I doubt
the average store has it.

#27 of 73 by remmers on Mon Aug 16 13:28:39 1993:

Hey, I paid money to see _Plan Nine from Outer Space_, _Robot Monster_,
_The Amazing Colossal Man_, _Creation of the Humanoids_, and other little
50's SF stinkers. I'm an afficionado of this stuff.

#28 of 73 by bap on Tue Aug 17 17:07:28 1993:

The Creeping Terror! How bad?

They lost the soundtrack, so they did a narrative voice-over for most of
the film.

The main character was a compilation of old carpeting about 16 feet in
diameter animated by one standing person and propelled by several others
crawling under the edges.

The spaceship was an old storage cylinder with a hole underneath so they
never had to film a door opening or closing.

None of the victims ever got away even tho the average land speed of this
creature was about1/2 mile per hour.
(with a good tail wind)

The actors were mostly college students with no ability other than being able
to scream in terror while crawling into the mosters mouth. (ie being eaten)

#29 of 73 by skeez on Tue Aug 17 21:05:55 1993:

Re#27..The Amazing Colossal Man! You have real taste, my boy.....

#30 of 73 by gregc on Wed Aug 18 00:30:41 1993:

Re: "The Creeping Terror"
So that's why it has no dialogue! The entire movie is narrated from begginning
to end, except for various crowd noises, screams, explosions, gun fire, yells,
etc.etc.

Other high(low) points:
The scene at the beginning the shows the "alien ship" landing is a stock
piece of NASA footage showing what looks like a Thor or Agena launch, only
shown in reverse!

Yes, nobody seems to be able to escape this monster that moves about as fast
as a turtle with arthritis.

In one thrilling(ack, ack) sequence, the monster crashes(stumbles?) through
the wall of an auditorium where a party/dance is being held. Of course
complete pandimonium ensues and everyone rushes for the double doors at the
other end of the room. In the course of trying to get out, one 50's-style-
macho-stud-type happens to get pushed by another 50's-style-macho-stud-type.
Do they keep going? No! They decide to stop right there and have a fist-fight!
And everyone else stops and watches them! Even while the monster is munching
it's way towards them.

#31 of 73 by skeez on Wed Aug 18 00:41:31 1993:

Hee. I'll have to catch that one....

#32 of 73 by remmers on Wed Aug 18 13:08:23 1993:

Me too.

Re _The Amazing Colossal Man_: Better badness can be had from the sequel,
_War of the Colossal Beast_.

#33 of 73 by skeez on Wed Aug 18 20:20:47 1993:

Sounds bad.....I just gotta say there's nothing cracks me up like when The
Colossal Man tosses the Giant syringe into theilitary officer.....
Hee. What fun.

#34 of 73 by gregc on Fri Aug 20 07:25:58 1993:

And speaking of bad films....
I just watched "Sinbad and the 7 Seas" with Lou Farrigno as Sinbad.

I laughed, I cried...
Ghod, what-A-Piece-of-Trash!!!!
It was so awful it was hysterical in places.

#35 of 73 by remmers on Fri Aug 20 10:59:09 1993:

A new cult in the making: Bad Sinbad Movies. Mystery Science Theater
showed another one the other night -- "The Magic Voyage of Sinbad".
For someone who's supposed to be Arabian, he and everyone else seemed
awfully Slavic or Scandanavian or some variety of North European...

#36 of 73 by bap on Mon Aug 23 19:33:52 1993:

My favorite scene in "The Creeping Terror" is the squad of military
infantry that show up to do battle with the alien. They all lay down
on the ground together in perfect prone firing position, but so close
together it looks like they are a rather "gay" group. Looks like an
orgy in a hong kong brothel but without the girls.

of course they all get eaten by the monster despite their M-14 and hand
grenades

#37 of 73 by skeez on Tue Aug 24 15:55:46 1993:

One funniest MST3K's Iv'e seen is The "Home Economics/Viking Women" Episode...
Heh...It doesn't really go with the Space-scifi-ish image, But it is funny
still.

#38 of 73 by vidar on Sun Aug 29 14:13:19 1993:

Let it be known that you have Viking Women to thank for Table Manners.

#39 of 73 by tpryan on Mon Aug 30 04:44:09 1993:

Try the MST3K treatment on "Fire Walk with ME", the Twin Peaks movie.
