Grex Scifi Item 149: The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe
Entered by papa on Fri Jun 9 00:00:22 UTC 2017:

I just finished this one-novel-in-four-books series. It is amazing! I'm
putting the books on my heart bookshelf after The Lord of the Rings and ahead
of the Foundation series.

The books in the series are:
1. The Shadow of the Torturer
2. The Claw of the Consiliator
3. The Sword of the Lictor
4. The Citadel of the Autarch

Definitely read the four together without taking too long a break between.
I took a few months before starting the third book after reading the first
two and found I'd forgotten too much of the plot. I reread the first two
books, which was surprisingly rewarding for catching small details I'd
completely missed the first time.

Wikipedia calls the series "science fantasy", but I'd call them straight
science fiction. No magic other than Clarke's Third Law "sufficiently advanced
technology."

I just finished Wolfe's follow-up/coda novel to the Book of the New Sun
series:

The Urth of the New Sun

It's great writing, a fascinating story, and fills-out the New Sun universe,
but definitely should be read after the four-book series.
