Grex Scifi Item 117: Confusion 2000
Entered by krj on Fri Jan 14 21:00:39 UTC 2000:

Once again, it's time for the item to discuss Confusion, the area's
oldest annual SF convention. I think it's the weekend of January 21-23.

We had thought about going this year, until we found that Leslie has
an audition that Sunday. Talking loud at room parties, and being around
unpredictable quantities of smoke, don't go with a singing audition.
So we'll skip it, once again. But *some* of you are certainly going,
no?

I'm planning on it.

#2 of 31 by kentn on Sat Jan 15 02:15:27 2000:

Where, when, how much at the door? etc.

#3 of 31 by krj on Sat Jan 15 06:47:33 2000:

The Stilyagi Air Corps should have a web page with all the
relevant information, and no I don't know the URL.

http://www.stilyagi.org/cons/confusion.html

(I do this every year, don't I?)

#5 of 31 by kentn on Sat Jan 15 23:29:40 2000:

As well you should...

#6 of 31 by robh on Mon Jan 17 05:39:32 2000:

Yes, but every year, posting the same URL?
Folks can't read the previous year's item?

#7 of 31 by anderyn on Tue Jan 18 01:22:45 2000:

I am going. I think.

#8 of 31 by madelf on Mon Jan 24 03:54:37 2000:

COngratulations to Robh for winning Babylon 5 jeopardy.

#9 of 31 by krj on Mon Jan 24 21:56:10 2000:

OK, it's over, correspondents file your convention reports *please*.

#10 of 31 by robh on Tue Jan 25 00:24:51 2000:

I won Babylon 5 Jeopardy. >8)

#11 of 31 by tpryan on Tue Jan 25 04:35:33 2000:

I won B5 Jeopardy at ConClave. I got the Babylon Park video.

For the first time in a long time, I stayed on Sunday becasue
there was something to do on Sunday.

#12 of 31 by otaking on Wed Mar 1 19:04:49 2000:

Overall, ConFusion was a good con. I had something to do on Friday and Sunday,
which is unusual. The hotel was great. I loved the haggis. Chuck's Bubbleman
costume was also very memorable.

#13 of 31 by void on Fri Mar 3 11:01:30 2000:

bubbleman was great. did you see him jump in the pool?

#14 of 31 by robh on Fri Mar 3 20:03:05 2000:

I was there for both the "carpet of bubbles" in the dance hall, and
the jump into the pool. Those were mong the high points of the con
for me!

#15 of 31 by otaking on Sat Mar 4 19:49:05 2000:

Unfortunately, I missed both of those events. I've seen the pictures on
Chuck's web sit though.

I enjoyed the aftermath though. After Chuck changed, Tomak ran up wearing a
strip of bubble wrap as a cape, calling himself Bubble Boy. It was funny
watching him roaming the pool are looking for Bubble Man after Chuck told him
that Bubble Man was gone.

#16 of 31 by void on Sat Mar 4 21:28:06 2000:

hmmm. tomak used to be scary. has he mellowed out any?

#17 of 31 by otaking on Sun Mar 5 02:41:42 2000:

He seems to have mellowed out to me.

#18 of 31 by robh on Sun Mar 5 03:24:17 2000:

I lived with him for a year, so I'm quite desensitized to him.

#19 of 31 by void on Sun Mar 5 21:20:18 2000:

he said some things in a truth or truth game at the northfield hilton
which inspired me to avoid him after that. glad to hear he may have
settled down some.

#20 of 31 by krj on Wed Mar 8 06:43:15 2000:

Well, since the Confusion discussion seems to have settled down:

What's this news about Contraption?

#21 of 31 by otaking on Wed Mar 8 17:03:18 2000:

Contraption is cancelled this year, due to poor management of the hotel. The
con chair decided to just cancel this year's con and prepare for next year's.

#22 of 31 by void on Wed Mar 8 18:55:38 2000:

apparently the hotel changed management last week or the week before
and refused to honor several terms in the contract.

#23 of 31 by void on Wed Mar 8 19:24:45 2000:

the new management was refusing to honor the contract, i mean.

#24 of 31 by otaking on Wed Mar 8 20:30:55 2000:

Like their "no room party" policy, which would've driven a lot of people away
from the con.

#25 of 31 by krj on Wed Mar 8 23:27:28 2000:

Sue the bastards! :)

Well, that stinks, especially coming so close to the con.
Same thing happened at the Confusion in Novi, 4-5 years ago.

#26 of 31 by tpryan on Thu Mar 9 23:57:37 2000:

The cons just are not as good at de-Hiltonizing hotels as they
used to be. The de-Hiltonized list includes the Plymouth Hilton, The
Southfield Hilton and a Troy Hilton (which was not only de-Hiltonized,
but de-built).

#27 of 31 by otaking on Fri Mar 10 04:34:44 2000:

Could you explain de-Hiltonizing? I don't understand the term.

I'm upset with the cancellation of Contraption. Not only did I want a reason
to spend time with friends, I also wanted to meet Poppy Z. Brite and Hal
Clement. Oh well, maybe next year.

#28 of 31 by gelinas on Fri Mar 10 04:42:15 2000:

Hotels that are no longer part of the Hilton chain?

#29 of 31 by tpryan on Fri Mar 10 23:05:17 2000:

After the cons where held at those hotels, the curse took over.
The owners changed, or they changed to another chain name. Plymouth
Hilton (I think) was a best western before giving it all up and becoming
a retirement home or something like that.
The string is longer that the few I remember, but NoVI Hilton
seems to not been affected by the sf con curse.

#30 of 31 by robh on Fri Mar 10 23:46:13 2000:

Well, that's a pretty cursed hotel in its own right, from what I heard.

#31 of 31 by albaugh on Mon Mar 13 23:21:13 2000:

Actually, the Plymouth Hilton (where I went to a few cons, being a Plymouth
resident) became the Radisson for awhile, before it went out of business, and
became an eyesore for several years. It is now a thriving "retirement
community".
