Star Trek Classic returns to CChannel 50, Detroit. Unknown if
it will be the edited version or orignal length.
Star Trek Classic will also be seen on The Science Fiction
channel on cable starting September 1st, 1998. They are bragging
that it will be all original length content. They just may take
90 minutes to show that 50 minutes of original content (plus one
more minute for the preview).
22 responses total.
As I understand it, the actual viewing schedule will be M-F and 11:30 pm.
I approve of this change, the Next Generation episodes they had been showing were simply not hokey enough to sustain my interest.. Judging by the first of the re-broadcast original episodes that will no longer be a problem.. I can forgive the bad matte paintings, primitive special effects, and mediocre acting (actually, perhaps "forgive" isn't the right word -- they may indeed be essential components of the show..) but was there ever really a time when those aqua-and-mustard-dominated color schemes looked futuristic?
I watched "Where No Man Has Gone Before" again last night on channel 50, and IMHO, the ST concept of a "futuristic look" is a lot more appealing that the "futuristic looks" from those 1970's SF shows I can remember. Try watching Space:1999 or Battlestar Galactica for comparison. >8)
Everybody on Battlestar Galactica had such long *hair*! I like the look of the original Trek. They couldn't afford very detailed sets, and NBC wanted to promote color, so they had these blocky sets with a lot of colored lights. TOS == Primary colors, all of them TNG == Green DS9 == Red STV == Yellow So no more series are possible, anyway.
Sorry, can you explain those color assignations? E.g. I don't get "green" with TNG at all...
Notice how all the control, etc. are this muted green? With TNG they had the budget to make wonderfully complex sets, but then they were stuck on one color. Last night's episode, the "salt vampire" one. Seems a bit out of sequence to my memory, but it sure feels like an early episode.
That was the first one broadcast, third one filmed.
> Notice how all the control, etc. are this muted green? You mean the "instrument" and "workstation" control panels? (touch-pads) In my mind's eye, I don't recall green standing out... And it looks like I won't have a chance to look at this carefully, for awhile, as long as TOS is now showing! :-)
I don't recall too well either, but I do recall thinking about the greenness of everything in TNG.
The TNG panels were mainly dark blue and green, to my memory. DS9 is very obviously red, from the panels to the lighting. I've seen maybe two episodes of Voyager, so I can't comment. >8)
DS9 (the station itself) was designed and built by Cardassians, who use similar design and coloring in all their military ships. I *loved* Battlestar Galactica!
They're definitely showing these out of order. Tonight's episode referenced the Tholian Web episode and another one, neither of which they've gotten around to showing yet.
A visit to the UPN 50 web page http://www.upn50.com shows that the old Trek is replaced next week by old DS9 episodes. The old Trek shows appear to have been a "best of". It was cool to see the "parallel universe" episode where Spock has a beard. ;)
There's a character in the Tenchi Muyo OVA (episode 4) {Japanese Anime}
who bears a striking resemblance to the Dark Side Spock...he's dead
within the first 2 minutes ;{
Well, STTOS is on in background. Ensign Smith was first to get it. However, he was a blue shirt.
I've got the classic Trek episode on now. I was hoping that they'd run it without the damn SciFi channel logo on the screen all the time. Also, I was expecting the commercial breaks to be long, but it feels more they've also broken into the show for commercials at times when there should not be breaks.
Apparently the brief run of STTOS on Channel 50 was a farewell performance. I ran across an article somewhere that Sci-Fi Channel now holds exclusive rights to STTOS for some number of years. Paramount had been willing to sell the exclusive rights for some time, but it had to wait until previous deals expired.
I've been catching episodes of Classic Trek whenever I can and have been a bit surprised at how well the scripts are holding up after 30 years. And, despite the ridicule Shatner has taken over the years about this acting ability or lack thereof, it seems to me the guy is pretty good.
A Good author, too, check out his ST novels and the Tek series.
<snort> *and* he's had a notable recording career..
recording?
Music. Singing. Well, they call it singing.
