        FLAT REVOLUTION
        When the first ever T.V was invented the technology behind the
displaying 
unit ,the  monitor was more primitive(as per words of todays engineers).
They were using a CRT as their monitor.But now the emerging technology is that
of "FLAT SCREENS".As we know nessisity is the mother of invensions,the need
to design a FLAT SCREEN monitor is to suit for modern pocket computers.
        In a convensional C.R.T we would be having a long tube with enl;arged
screen at one end and a electron gun at other end.The tube shoulb be
long,because,it must allow the electron beam to diverge sufficiently.The
screen should be slightly curved in order to make sure that the electrons of
a beam at a particular time reach the screen at the same time.ThThese are the
reasons why our conventional monitor is larger in size.
But in a FLAT SCREEN monitor they use LCD(Liquid Crystal Display)technology
or some other technology .Here there are no more elecytron beam used,and hence
no more long necked picture tuber or curved surfaced screens needed.As a
result the size of the monitor decreases dramatically and its power
consumption is much reduced.

Plasma displays are flat, too.  And they have no relationship whatsoever
to pocket computers, as they are too power-hungry.

I From a practical point of view, flat panel LCD displays are 
exclusively used in laptops, and big ones are available for desktops, 
but the big ones are still way too pricey to have a big market, even 
though they have come down a whole bunch in price in that last few 
years.

That much is quite true.  Everyone wants a big flat-panel display,
but so far very few people want to pay what current technology costs
to make them.

Not to worry, the prices will come down.

        15 years ago, IT departments would spend $1,000 dollars for an
11 inch monochrome dumb terminal.  Flat screen, color, 13 monitors are
now near half that, $500.
