Grex Rpg Item 25: RPG Newbie seeks Words of Wisdom
Entered by lee on Mon Dec 23 16:39:42 UTC 1996:

Hi all! I just found this conference. I've been recently (read: last week)
introduced to the world of role-playing and am a bit overwhelmed by it all
so I was hoping that maybe some of you more knowledgeable people could help
me out. My friends have dragged me into this because I write stories and they
say with my imagination, I'd enjoy it. Right now I'm not sure what to do
though! I don't quite have the concepts in mind yet, I guess. I just kind
of sit around and wonder what the heck I'm suppose to do with these weapons
and armors and whatnot. I understand the life-paths and stuff fine, but not
the battles.

Any advice for this RPG newbie?

What sort of time setting and technology levels typically occur in your
stories? Where do your remembered dream-adventures lead you? These
questions, and their respective answers, should help steer you towards the
RPG that will grow to be your favorite. But a word of advice: Even once
you've found one you really liked, don't be afraid to try others. Try a broad
range, and even if you've only played some of them once, you'll at least have
it in your experience.

Well, actually, one of my friends is running a BGC campaign over break and
since none of us have much else to do, we figured we'd get involved, but now
I'm not sure where to go, what to do, etc. because I've never role-played
before (well, except for playing cops and robberes as a little kid and later
on in junior high doing some really warped universe game but...) so I guess
what I'm looking for is like, what is expected of my character, etc. and what
kind of things I'm expected to do, etc. I need to go with the flow but don't
know how to get started.

What is BGC? I can't help you if I can't understand you.

Welcome to our wonderful conference, also check out great ring, the Other rpg
conference. Advice, buy a few handbooks and do a little reading. Good luck!

BGC = BubbleGum Crisis... a futuristic anime type world... I believe it's set
in 2033 and all cities have sort of gotten bigger and one company owns 70%
of the world... are you familiar with it?

There's two RPG conferences? What's the difference? I'll go take a look at
the other one now...

#7 of 22 by bjorn on Wed Dec 25 18:56:19 1996:

Ah, yes. I have a friend who said he was going to bring that up to my
college. I haven't seen BGC in my Anime viewing (mainly because I think it's
too long), but I am also in an Anime role-playing game, Mekton for which I
have created an 11th Sailor Senshi - Sailor Vulcan.

The difference between the two conferences is mainly which was created first,
but somewhat attitude. While CCGs, Video games, and non-constructive
criticism are allowable topics here (not to mention focus on games), they are
not in Great Ring. Great Ring focuses on the definition of role-playing,
therefore, while there are games, discussion of all types of theatre under
the working definition are encouraged.

however much of it is linked between the two.

Okay, new question. Has anybody out there ever heard of "Teenagers from Outer
Space"? A friend was telling me about it and it sounds very amusing.

#10 of 22 by bjorn on Mon Feb 17 02:39:52 1997:

Yes. And that's all I'll say to that.

#11 of 22 by robh on Mon Feb 17 03:08:31 1997:

I have a copy. It's amusing. What more did you want to know? >8)

#12 of 22 by bjorn on Mon Feb 17 15:04:40 1997:

Okay, so I lied - I DO have more to say. A certain someone has alluded to
the possibility of TFOS being a better system to do Sailor Moon under
especially since the Saiolr Senshi are TFOS.

Re: #11
<lee wonders where she can get a copy to peruse>

werid

#15 of 22 by mneme on Sat Mar 1 09:46:25 1997:

TFOS is kinda neat, though I'ld probabgly run the genre with something a
LITTLE more simple/elegant (not that TFOS isn't simple -- I'd say it's in
TOON's league, but I'm a systems snob).
Certainly a good system to go Sailor Moon under, though why you'ld
        wantto, I don't know.

Well considering that there are at least two Sailor Moon otaku who respons
in this item . . .

#17 of 22 by kain on Sun Mar 9 02:22:16 1997:

rob: this is prolly the one that should be linked to intro

#18 of 22 by robh on Sun Mar 9 17:48:32 1997:

They should *all* be linked to Intro! >8)

This item has been linked from RPGs 25 to Intro 153.
Type "join rpgs" at the Ok: prompt for discussion of
games, gaming, and game-related topics.

#19 of 22 by lee on Sun Mar 9 23:43:26 1997:

Boy this intro conference must be getting big... wasn't the purpose of intro
to let newbies avoid the largeness of agora? <boggle>

#20 of 22 by robh on Mon Mar 10 05:46:19 1997:

<robh thinks lee should actually go to Intro and see how many
*current* items there are before he comments>

#21 of 22 by starwolf on Sun Jun 14 08:00:22 1998:

Unfortunately, I am not extremely familiar with the BGC rpg system. Is it,
by any chance, published by the same company that made Mekton?

I love the Mekton combat system just for that fact that dodges are free!

#22 of 22 by starwolf on Sun Jul 12 00:27:33 1998:

re #7: BGC too long? You'd hate Record of Lodoss War (D&D-esque fantasy) or
Gundam: Stardust Memory (VERY well done mecha anime), as both are in excess of
13 hours.
