Grex Rpg Item 20: Diplomacy Game [linked]
Entered by kain on Mon Nov 11 22:30:34 UTC 1996:

I'm looking for some general interest here. I'm going to be runing an on-line
game of diplomacy. This is a of thinking, negotiation and strategy there is
no luck involved. Each player plays one of seven countries, England, France,
Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Rusia, and Turkey. Each is given some
teritory and some armies. You make aliances with other people, and do
anything you can to conquer the most teritory possible, but don't decieve too
much or no-one will trust you.. I'm just looking for general interest, once
I get that I'll destrubute the full set of rules. First come-first serve

I'll play until about march.. then maybe give my country to someone else, or
just let it fade into anarchy...

#6 of 106 by ajax on Fri Nov 15 05:51:47 1996:

I played Diplomacy once many years ago, and can't remember any of
the rules, but if your instructions will be adequate for beginners,
I'm interested.

#7 of 106 by kain on Fri Nov 15 19:53:01 1996:

Yes, they'll be atequite, were last time. So we have four now.

#12 of 106 by kain on Sat Nov 23 04:18:43 1996:

keourac is 5
mneme?

#13 of 106 by robh on Sun Nov 24 23:32:31 1996:

So folks do understand the rules, only the seven nations listed in
#0 can be played in a standard game of Diplomacy. And the order in
which players choose the countries is done randomly. (Unless kain
chooses to use a different set of rules, I've seen at least thirty
variants.)

#14 of 106 by snafu on Mon Nov 25 02:11:45 1996:

use the rules we started with.. that's what works...

#15 of 106 by kain on Mon Nov 25 19:35:46 1996:

re#13 exactly

#16 of 106 by mneme on Wed Nov 27 02:13:23 1996:

I'm in.
And don't forget, epople, -- ownership of supply centers may only change
in the turn right before you build/disband 9that's spring, no?). So if it's
uncontrolled, you can only gain it by having an army or fleet there at the
end of spring, and if you control it, you can only lose it by having someone
else having a unit there at the end of Spring. Move-throughs in Fal are only
good for a laugh..

#17 of 106 by snafu on Wed Nov 27 02:27:38 1996:

I guess...

#18 of 106 by coyote on Wed Nov 27 15:22:20 1996:

Oh! I'll play. (I haven't been on in quite some time... I hope there are
still spaces left :)

#19 of 106 by jsr on Wed Nov 27 21:05:45 1996:

Re #16: You got that backwards. Ownership of supply centers can change
only after the Fall turn. Occupation during Spring has no effect on
ownership. However, as you said, builds/removals do occur immediately
before Spring (or after Fall, if you prefer to look at it that way).

BTW, as much as I like Diplomacy, I don't have time to participate.
However, I am willing to serve as ombudsman, to resolve occasional rules
disputes when players/GM cannot agree. This assumes, of course, that
none of the game's participants objects to my being ombudsman.

#20 of 106 by snafu on Wed Nov 27 21:13:47 1996:

sure, but can we use a term besides ombudsman... I can't spell it and I don't
know what it means...

#21 of 106 by kain on Wed Nov 27 22:08:11 1996:

so it's
Eldrich
Robh
Ajax
Coyote
Snafu
Mnemeand keourac if he's playing

thanks

#22 of 106 by snafu on Wed Nov 27 22:19:34 1996:

ooh... I get to be turkey.... I kicked ass as turkey last time... wh

#23 of 106 by ajax on Thu Nov 28 00:12:46 1996:

I've heard "corner" countries tend to be advantagious in Diplomacy.
Fewer neighbors to pick on you. Fewer neighbors to pick on though,
too.

#24 of 106 by snafu on Thu Nov 28 00:37:39 1996:

but turkey... ooh... I'm not going to tell my secrets about turkey

#25 of 106 by mneme on Thu Nov 28 05:03:43 1996:

Russia, eh? Whoa boy. Well, I've played every other country on that side o
that side of the board. And if I'd remembered that the years started with the
spring, I'd remember that it was fall positions that counted, not spring.

#26 of 106 by snafu on Thu Nov 28 14:32:59 1996:

so when do we start?

#27 of 106 by eldrich on Thu Nov 28 16:05:45 1996:

I'll see if I can find the rules... I've got the map on disk. U know, the ascii

#28 of 106 by kain on Sat Nov 30 04:28:18 1996:

#32 of 106 by kain on Mon Dec 2 22:59:17 1996:

bob do you know the URl so people could get a slightly clearer map?

#33 of 106 by eldrich on Tue Dec 3 22:34:23 1996:

This is why I didn't copy the map onto this item. And no I have no clue where
people could find a better copy other than item item 7 on RPG. I'll try to
find out though.
<Bob continues his search>

#34 of 106 by kain on Wed Dec 4 03:40:34 1996:

the rules though.. could you post the rules?

#35 of 106 by eldrich on Wed Dec 4 22:19:04 1996:

Aha ! I have returned bearing gifts of URLs! The diplomatic puch has a geart
list of maps. The URL is HTTP://www.sni.net/~mhand/DipPouch/online/maps.htm
l IT'S ILLEGAL! If you folks don't mind I'll photo copy my summary and snail
many it to U all <Bob proceeds to be low tech>

#36 of 106 by snafu on Wed Dec 4 22:40:11 1996:

ok... How's about when we do get started, we make a seperate item for results
of moves, and freeze it after each posting (to cut down on cluttering side
conversations) and keep all discussion here? It'd make it easier to go back and
check the old moves, say if you lose track, or foget to write them down..

#37 of 106 by kain on Thu Dec 5 21:33:53 1996:

note to all you floks reading this from agora: Agora will be restarted as
usual.. come to rpg and read it from there. the item number is 20.
Bob: the rules dangit!we don't all have www acess though I assume most of us
do.

EXTREmlY IMPORTANT: ANYONE LISTEd AS PLAYING THAT DOEs NOT WANT TO: NOTifY
ME ASAP. ANyone WHO DOES NOT Get THe ruleS.. notify me and if bob can't get
them here I'll try to write up a brief copy with all the important stuff

#38 of 106 by ajax on Mon Dec 9 23:50:45 1996:

I don't have the rules. Mail to 5915 Plum Hollow #2, Ypsilanti MI 48197, if
you want to transmit them by snail mail. Anyone can access the web from Grex,
but only in text mode. So if the rules are on the web, we can get them from
there.

#39 of 106 by eldrich on Wed Dec 11 15:45:19 1996:

I need other addresses from folks if U want the rules.
As far as I know there are no copies of the rules on the net.
Snafu- If you haven't put your new adress in your plan I will need it.
