October 1991
26      Crown Tournament; Jararvellir (the group that puts on the event);
Madison, WI. This is were our next King and Queen are determined.

November 1991
9 The Festival of Samhainn (this is listed in the _Pale_ calendar as
All-Saints; Stormvale; Davison, MI (about 10 miles east of Flint)

There are events in Cincinatti, Columbus, Hamilton (Ont), Winnipeg, Chicago,
IN, IL and Rochester NY as well. I'm not sure how far out I should go and
still be considered 'local'. Personally, I rarely look too closely at events
further than a 2-3 hour drive, except for Crown Tourney or Coronation.

When are the "local" local events? Like guild meetings, fighting practice, etc?
Might be nice to post these for the folks who would like to find the local
SCA chapter, such as me for one. :)

Just moved to A^2 and have the urge to swing a stick...

Syr Aweiodian aef Crawansdale, KSCA (and other things...) [ex]An Tir.

KSCA? Sounds like a hip rasta radio station in California.

Oh boy, looks like Cynnabar gets a sixth Knight.

Meetings are 8:00 Monday nights with a workshop or seminar on various topics
at 7:00 in room 1311 of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Building on
North Campus. Talk to me before or after the meeting. I am the chronicaler
and all new members to Cynnabar get a free 3 month subscription to the
Citadel (the shire newsletter). I will be carrying a gray briefcase, a gray
knitting bag, a plastic bag of Domesday Bokes (shire phone, address, and
persona storys book) and at least 1 radio. Sometimes with STeve and kids in
tow.

#5 of 115 by bad on Sun Mar 15 23:56:57 1992:

Can I come and watch sometime? That's right by my apt...

#6 of 115 by glenda on Mon Mar 16 13:17:52 1992:

Sure, drop on by. I don't go to every meeting (being an officer I am
required by the By Laws to attend 2 meetings a month). I am most likely to be
be on the 1st and last meetings of the month (submission deadline for the
newsletter is the last meeing of the month and distribution is the 1st meeting)
but am just as likely as not to be there in between.

The seminars are usually fun and always informative. The seminar for the 2nd
meeting of the month is usually dance. We have a dance master that teaches
the dances that were danced in court in our period (or something that is very
much like). It can be fun to do and hilarious to watch.

#7 of 115 by bad on Tue Mar 17 01:03:53 1992:

I'll make sure not to go to that one, then :)

#8 of 115 by steve on Tue Mar 17 05:23:29 1992:

They're fun to watch--there is something about dancing in those ages
that appeals to me. This comes from someone with no graces at all in
that department. But the flow and grace are something to at least watch.
Over time I hope to be able to join in.

Sort of local, sort of not; the "Sears club" of Ontario, a travel agency
or something like one, has been featuring the Ontario SCA in their
commercials on CBC - and then saying, "maybe it's been a while since
you've had a vacation".
Then they show the model railroad club, and say, "Maybe it's been
*too long*."
Then the SETI-type group, who say the first thing they'd do if they
found intelligent life would be to give them the universal sign of peace,
then go "party".
Then, "Maybe you need a vacation. Blah blah blah talk to us"

        A dig, a major dig.

I wonder if the groups realized the flavor of the commercial when
they agreed to appear?

#10 of 115 by steve on Sat Apr 18 04:15:14 1992:

Glenda and I were talking about that the other day. I haven't seen
the as myself, but I think it sounds like someone got tricked. For
many, the SCA *is* a vacation.

#11 of 115 by bad on Sat Apr 18 17:36:13 1992:

Yeah, the SCA people were in full gear, and seemed quite earnest.
They lingered on what I think they judged to be the most "geeky-looking"
woman. I imagine they're peeved.

#12 of 115 by glenda on Mon Apr 20 00:20:12 1992:

I asked people about this at the event yesterday. No one else knew anything
about it and most were a bit upset. I think I shall write to the Society
wide officers and inquire into it. I'm not sure if a Canadian company has
to clear such things with a USA based group, but I will try to find out.

#13 of 115 by bad on Mon Apr 20 11:35:51 1992:

Writing to the Ontario chapter would be worth a shot.
(I'm not absolutely certain that they were the Ontario chapter, but pretty
sure).
You shouldn't have any trouble catching it; I might even have it on tape.
(CBC seems to parcel out two or three commercials for each show, and run them
in a block at each commercial break. Over and over and over.)
I'll check my Kids in the Hall tape, if you like.

#14 of 115 by glenda on Mon Apr 20 13:21:22 1992:

I watch CBC during the day and have caught it, since it is the first commercial
in the block I haven't caught the full message that they print in the bottom
corner. If you have it on tape and can give me the full thing, I would
appreciate it. The more I see the bloody thing, the more I feel insulted by
it. I enjoy the SCA and feel that is the break from everyday that one takes
a vacation for, not that I should be taking a vacation from the SCA! Sure
there are those that get too involved with hobbies, but that seems to be a
minority in any group. Our shire does have something going on every evening
of the week, but I highly doubt that anyone attends every one of them.

('Course, since I got my AoA (that's Award of Arms, which means that I am now
'Lady Tanwyn') at Saturday's court (with all 6 of MidRealm's Royalty in
attendance), I guess I gotta get a bit more involved. To think that I almost
didn't go to the event.)

#15 of 115 by bad on Mon Apr 20 16:10:26 1992:

Congrats.

#16 of 115 by craig on Mon Apr 20 16:13:05 1992:

The commercial doesnt seem to be malicious in nature, more like misguided
in humor.

#17 of 115 by raddison on Wed Sep 23 01:42:46 1992:

Remember, all they're trying to do is sell their product. Insulting some

#18 of 115 by raddison on Wed Sep 23 01:47:57 1992:

(oops. What a dumb editor.)
as I was saying...
Insulting someone else seems to be considered almost necessary in commercials
these days. Not to say I approve, but I don't think they're point was to say
the SCA is stupid. That's kind of a minor part of the commercial. Their
point is to say that you should spend your money on their travel services.

By the way, since this is the place for local event discussion . . .

Is there a schedule for what workshops etc. will be happening at the local
meetings this month, or better yet, for several months in advance? Does
Cynnabar schedule its meeting topics that far in advance?

It's probably best to let me know by email at work, since I've been on here
twice, the first time being in July. But I'll do better, I promise! :)
email: Rich_Addison@med.umich.edu.

#19 of 115 by raddison on Wed Sep 23 01:50:53 1992:

By the way, getting back to the commercial--is the group being insulted just
some SCA-like group, or is SCA specifically referred to? I obviously haven't
seen it, but if the SCA isn't referred to quite specifically, then we _really_
have nothing to get our dander up about.

#20 of 115 by glenda on Wed Sep 23 12:54:16 1992:

It was the SCA specifically. There was a complaint filed and that segment
of the commercial was pulled.

As for Cynnabar's workshops, we try to set at least a month at a time.
Unfortunately, I haven't made it to a meeting for a while and don't know
the current schedule. I'm going to try my hardest to be there next Monday
and get the schedule for October/November for printing in the _Citadel_.

#21 of 115 by pegasus on Wed Dec 2 20:11:42 1992:

WHat events does the SCA have going for December locally?

                        Pattie Rayl

#22 of 115 by glenda on Sun Dec 6 18:45:01 1992:

Hawkland Moor (Pontiac) is having a Wassail & Decennial on the 12th. There
are 2 Twelfth nights in January; 1 in Grand Rapids and 1 in Detroit.

#23 of 115 by davidtg on Thu Aug 26 00:25:52 1993:

Did anyone else go to the Bristol, IL rennasaince (sp?) fair?

#24 of 115 by jasmine on Thu Aug 26 04:30:38 1993:

Has anyone gone to the Michigan Fest this year yet???

#25 of 115 by skeez on Thu Aug 26 16:05:09 1993:

This has nothing to do with th' Mich.Fest, But I'm just glad this .cf has
actually seen some interest. This .cf is the .cf that comes to mind when I say
"Inactive .cf's" (This and Melvin)

#26 of 115 by jasmine on Fri Aug 27 04:48:45 1993:

So, sky..., been to the Ren Fest this year???

#27 of 115 by skeez on Sat Aug 28 15:51:52 1993:

I haven't. I wanted to go. But tell me, Were there any rappers back in the
Middle Ages?? I did see some people from the Renfest.....There were some
jugglers, A bang oops. Band, rather Called the "Gypsy Guerilla Band" I think
that's what they were called....It was nice.

#28 of 115 by kentn on Sun Aug 29 16:26:45 1993:

The Mich Ren Fest is probably earning its reputation as a Mud Fest today.
I'm glad I'm not slogging around there...

#29 of 115 by jasmine on Tue Aug 31 04:35:36 1993:

Yeah..., it was quite interesting to say the least. A lot of the people
working there were involved in periodical mud fights during the day, I however
was not one of them...., but finally they got arrested for what they were d[A
doing.... But yeah, it was very wet, and very cold, I could see my breath.
My cloak weighed about 10 pounds I'm sure...
But, we played the hokey-pokey at one point....

#30 of 115 by skeez on Tue Aug 31 14:23:57 1993:

Sounds like a fun old time.I would have loved to hassle the rollers...(cops)
Hassling Cops is one of my fav. pastimes....:)

#31 of 115 by pegasus on Tue Aug 31 15:08:07 1993:

I haven't gone to the Ren.Fest. yet this year, but I do hope too.:) We
make our annual pilgrimage there, usually to buy Carl Lundgren artwork.

#32 of 115 by jasmine on Tue Aug 31 20:48:24 1993:

It would have been even more fun if the tempurature was about 20 degress
higher...
I hope that next weekend will be better...

#33 of 115 by pegasus on Thu Apr 14 00:16:39 1994:

The Ann Arbor chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism is organizing
a summer event, to take place July 23&24 here in Ann Arbor at the Knights
of Columbus campground. Merchants, tournaments, archery are all included!

#34 of 115 by kentn on Thu Apr 14 03:24:44 1994:

So what is this summer event called?

#35 of 115 by kami on Thu Apr 14 17:56:55 1994:

I don't think it has a name yet. It will also have a quest and, I hope, some
kids' activities (lots of people want to *help* with them, no one wants to
be in charge. so what else is new...)

#36 of 115 by bnm on Mon Apr 25 16:08:13 1994:

Kami, are mundanes welcome at the event, or is this a SCA-only event?
My wife and I have thought about joining, but our two-year old is
keeping us rather busy at the moment...

#37 of 115 by kami on Mon Apr 25 18:50:58 1994:

If you want to come, we'll find you costumes and feast-gear and such like and
give you some idea of what to expect. We don't allow tourists, but are happy
to include any interested newcomer/visitor.
Two-year-olds are by definition a handful... I have a 4 and an almost-
toddling to chase. It has really cut down my SCA participation this year, with
no other adult free to come along to events. But don't let one kid stop you.

#38 of 115 by pegasus on Mon Jun 6 18:21:50 1994:

Anyone have info about events coming up in June? I don't seem to be getting
the newsletter even tho I gave the woman who does that my address.
I understand that new people can get 3 comp.issues of the newsletter. I
haven't sent in the forms and check yet, but I hope to soon.

        Pattie

#39 of 115 by kami on Tue Jun 7 05:20:04 1994:

Pegasus, the Chronicler may have changed- when did you give he your address?
Do you remember who it was?

Upcoming- this weekend is "Border Wars", looks like there may be some
people arranging to carravan to the event. Sunday afternoon will be Shire
Council meeting at the Advanced technologies Lab on NOrth Campus. Don't
know beyond that. Do you have a phone list or any contact #s? If not, I'll
go look up some people who are likely to have information.
