Grex Rialto Item 33: Pennsic Pilgrimage
Entered by kami on Thu May 16 04:00:15 UTC 1996:

So- who's going to this Pennsic? What do you think of the preregistration and
new land-grab style? If you're going, with whom are you camping and where?
For how long do people go? Do you eat authentic, take-out or canned? How
do you plan to spend your time?

That sounds interesting.. how long do you have to register?

#2 of 47 by mneme on Mon May 20 07:21:11 1996:

Memememememe. I will probably camp with Ostgardr again this year. Not sure
I like the preregistration and new land-grab style, but not sure I dislike
it either.
As far as food goes, this is one of those things that's been a great
frustration for me. I have little choice but to share food with others,
and its is nigh impossible to find folks who are even willing to make the
attmpt to prepare and eat period food at Pennsic. Still, I've been hereing
reasonable reliable rumors of amostly authentic meal plan to be organized in my
very own Whyte Whey, and I may get to eat Period food this Pennsic yet.
Now, if I can only manage to lay my mits on a pavilion....
As far as how I spend my time: I shop. I dance, and practice dance.
I shop some more. I hang out in the Enchanted Ground. I go to classes of
various sorts and Flavors. I Spend time with Friends. And at Night? I sing,
dance, tell stories, and occasionally even drink.
        Anyone else?

        --Fiacha

Can't you make your own Pavillion?

#4 of 47 by mneme on Sat Jun 1 16:36:13 1996:

Yeah, you can, but it's expensive (though far less expensive than buying
one), and tricky both tho transport and to make. The thing doesn't
just have to be able to stay upright -- it has to be able to able to be
reasonably easy to set up, as well as stand up to the wind and the rain.

I want _desperately_ to go to Pennsic, but, as I may be moving and helping
a friend move across country that month.. things might be a little tight.
(Clarification: I'm not moving across country, I'm helping my friend move here
to A2.) Maybe, hopefully, I can squeak by and make the l;ast weekend? Since
it's the 25th, I gotta be there!

#6 of 47 by arthurp on Sat Jun 29 02:50:38 1996:

I keep meaning to get involved with these things. I started a few years back,
but decided not to flunk out of school by concentrating my time.

#7 of 47 by mneme on Fri Jul 26 22:09:05 1996:

Lisa: Pennsic's the 18th..

#8 of 47 by alianora on Mon Jul 29 23:32:27 1996:

Hee. I meant, since it's the 25th Pennsic. I know it's not the 25th of August.
But, alas, financial resources being what they are (or aren't, to be more
specific), I won't be able to make it this year. That really sucks. A lot.

Hey Josh! What day are you leaving for Pennsic? I'll be going on
Tuesday, the 14th (is it the 14th or the 13th?). I mean to be there
for Shadowmaker's wake. What a party that will be! It's hard to believe
he won't be there "in person". Anyway, I'll be camped with Honour
(Mistress Alizonde) at merchants- the Bazaar side of the barn, same a
last year. I expect to be going with just Timothy, although Michael
is sort f still waffling about coming along. Anyway, I'd be glad to feed
you, and I *don't* do canned goods. Wanna trade kid-sitting some for
food?
My pavilion is a viking tent (A frame) made of canvas drop cloths and
pine 2 x 4s. It wasn't terribly hard, it's not terribly hard to put
up- takes two people, a third is helpful, and I never have trouble finding
that help. It's quite spacious; 15'long, 12' wide, 10' or 12' high, dry
as a bone, cool and comfortable and now about 6 years old. It cost
about $300.00 to make, including the 5 gallon drum of Thompsons Waterseal
with which we doused it liberally since I didn't trust to drop cloths
to be a tight enough and consistent enough canvas to stay dry on their
own. Of course, that means I can't add to the painting any more without
wrecking the waterproofing, even if the paint would behave right. Oh well.

Bummer, Alianora, I was going to see if I could offer you a ride. Oh well.

Mmmn. I haven't been this far into brex for a while, have I? :) Was fun
seeing you at Pennsic; got a job a month after Pennsic -- (need to get more
involved in the SCA, but no time )-; Hope you are doing well.

#11 of 47 by kami on Tue Nov 12 20:48:42 1996:

Wow! Life in this conference, how amazing. I have't done any SCA excep
Pennsic in some years now. Congrats on the job. I take it the ride home
has left no lasting damage? See you again next year, eh?

#12 of 47 by doomfrog on Wed Jan 15 04:28:52 1997:

Maybe there should be a mailing list instead or something instead of the
conference. :/

#13 of 47 by kami on Sun Jan 19 05:30:14 1997:

There is. At least for the Shire of Cynnabar. It's not thrilling, but
it's better than nothing.

#14 of 47 by doomfrog on Sat Jan 25 04:37:22 1997:

How do I get on the mailing list?
(better send me email about it)

#15 of 47 by kami on Sat Jan 25 05:18:01 1997:

Send me mail with that question. I'm more likely to remember, or to have
the relevant address handy, there.

#16 of 47 by mneme on Tue May 27 23:12:33 1997:

Course, I doubt *I*'d want to be on Cynnabar's list :) (specking of which,
should really set up a list for Whyte Whey).
Kami, are you making it to Etheracon next year? Missed you at this one.

#17 of 47 by kami on Thu May 29 03:51:15 1997:

Dearling, I'd *love* to make Etheracon. Depends on our schedule, after all-
Timothy is in grade school now, Michael has a fairly responsible job, money
comes and goes and my schedule varies, after all. We made it to Ecumenacon, in
DC, in April, instead. Missed you, and all my other Eastern friends.
Cynnabar's list might amuse you, but of course it's irrelevant except as a
contrast. What are SCA politics like out your way, or don't I want to know?
<g>

#18 of 47 by mneme on Tue Jun 24 21:58:14 1997:

<nod> I did meantion that Lisa has her Phd, right?
I've been staying WELL out of SCA politics lately -- not my
cuppa, usually.

#19 of 47 by kami on Thu Jun 26 02:03:24 1997:

Lately? Something I've missed, or you're too busy?
Nope, hadn't mentioned Lisa's PhD. Do I know her?

#20 of 47 by mneme on Wed Jul 30 17:58:38 1997:

Well, ever, though I've occasionally meddled in local politics to
the point of trying to make some things (like, say, dance practice)
happen. Lisa's my girlfiend, a fan,p gan, and SCAdian (well, lapsed
SCAdian), and a regular to, amongh other things, Etheracon (and before
that, Eso).

#21 of 47 by kami on Thu Jul 31 03:39:20 1997:

I expect I'd recognize her and feel foolish for not remembering. Making
dance practice happen is a *good* thing.

#22 of 47 by mneme on Thu Jul 31 17:23:22 1997:

You probably would, though I'll introduce you anyway the next time all three of
us are in the same place (Etheracon, asuming you make it, or Buccaneer (the
'98 baltimore Worldcon) if you make that, or War 27 (it is 27 next year, no)
if you don't.

#23 of 47 by kami on Fri Aug 1 01:00:53 1997:

Wow! If this is Pennsic 26, it would be my 13th war. Sigh...And I hope to
make it to Etheracon this year, but I suspect I can't do both that and a
summer trip.

#24 of 47 by mneme on Fri Aug 1 16:10:15 1997:

I'm pretty sure last year was the commemoritave 25 (remember, that's why we
finally slipped over the 10k mark when we'd been a jump below it for two
years), so that would make this year 26, yeah. And 13 wars, sheesh -- I'm only
at 4, though afterthis one I'll have missed 2 (I started with 21).
Regarding Etheracon, why not do a SHORT summer trip and explicitly put
money away for Etheracon? Last year's was pretty fun.

#25 of 47 by kami on Sun Aug 3 19:37:27 1997:

Money isn't the problem, it's time. Just now, we have no idea where we'll
be or what next year will hold- Michael's job is kind of winding down. I'm
hoping for Toronto...(which will make Etheracon and Pennsic quite doable,
Starwood a bit long I think, and a family trip to Philadelphia pretty rough.)
I'm just afraid, having missed one War, that it'll be harder to get organized
for the next one. <sigh>

#26 of 47 by krokus on Thu Jun 21 22:53:12 2001:

I figured this was a good time to stir up the item about War, since
it's #30 this year. Anyone going?

#27 of 47 by kami on Fri Jun 29 21:12:10 2001:

Wow! My last response sure was a long time ago. <sigh> And no one has been
here since. Well.
The boys and I are going to Pennsic. Oops! Didn't realize it was #30. It's
going to be insane. Oh well.

#28 of 47 by krokus on Sat Jun 30 23:23:24 2001:

Reports I've been hearing of the participation level for this year is
astounding. Pennsic will register as a mid-sized town, from the sounds
of it.

#29 of 47 by madelf on Sun Jul 1 03:32:14 2001:

Last I heard there were about 11,000 people registered. SHould be quite
crowded and lots of fun. :)

#30 of 47 by krokus on Sun Jul 1 13:54:07 2001:

If it wern't for a family obligation, I'd be going there. The fun part
would be that I would be in the camp of the Great Dark Horde.

#31 of 47 by kami on Wed Jul 4 02:03:05 2001:

Horde is good folks.
Uh oh, hope I can even *get* in, not having pre-registered.

#32 of 47 by krokus on Sat Jul 7 13:59:20 2001:

Send in your registration as soon as you can, I know that the first
land grab has been done, but the sooner the better.

I'm sure you could still get in, even if you just showed up. Of course
you might have to sleep in your wheeld chariot. :)

#33 of 47 by kami on Tue Jul 10 16:23:34 2001:

I'm expecting to stay at merchants', and help out a friend who is a merchant.
It has as many advantages as disadvantages.

#34 of 47 by krokus on Tue Jul 17 01:31:45 2001:

Ok, I've been told that there is only walk-in registration left. But
the more interesting thing is that there are more people than planned,
just in the pre-reg. The Middle Kingdom is having to shuffle people's
camping areas around, moving some from places that they're used to being.

This could get interesting.

#35 of 47 by kami on Wed Jul 18 02:36:48 2001:

Oh dear.

#36 of 47 by michaela on Fri Jul 20 00:25:07 2001:

Cynnabar got its traditional space in W02, but only because we had so many
pre-registered (84). :)

#37 of 47 by krokus on Mon Aug 6 15:37:51 2001:

Ok, who is leaving when? The time is upon us.

#38 of 47 by michaela on Tue Aug 7 23:31:01 2001:

I'm leaving Friday.

#39 of 47 by kami on Wed Aug 8 01:00:11 2001:

I'm leaving either Friday or Saturday. I may have some spare room in my
trailer if anyone needs it. Anyone want to carravan?
