Grex Rialto Item 30: Light Weapons Fighters
Entered by doomfrog on Tue Aug 8 00:31:18 UTC 1995:

Just out of curiousity, is Light Weapons Fighting done/permitted in the
SCA groups local to Ann Arbor? Being a fencer already, I was looking over
a Triplette catalog, and noticing 'The Compleat Light Weapons Fighter' book
they were selling, and some fencing Tunics and weapons they said were
compatible with SCA rules on the subject.. it would seem to me to be faster
and cheaper to try it out than assembling a heavy weapons fighting rig..
(and more related to my regular fencing)..
Also, anything I should take into note? Do they ban modern fencing
masks and require different ones etc?

If you have ?s about period and SCA fencing, the best person to ask is
David Hoornstra. 996-4233 He's the area expert, I believe.

David is holding informal fencing practices on a weekly basis (I believe)

Modern fencing masks are all but required, as is protective clothing. I just
purchased an epee as did one of my household members. We are both interested
is doing the SCA-fencing thing and would be interested is others willing
to play. What equipment do you have?

Welp, I got two foils, one with a visconti, the other with a german pistol grip
one of those Negrini masks, and a fencing jacket basically re my fencing
gear. I've never fenced Epee before, but I was interested this year in
learning Epee or Sabre a little.. so I wouldn't be adverse to getting some
Epee gear actually if thats what you wanna fence with. I also liked some of
the stuff I was reading in the Compleat Light Weapons Fighter book about
fencing with two weapons (sword and dagger and all that) and wouldn't mind
trying some of it..
Er Would really like to try some of it I mean.

Yes, Dave Hoornstra is quite the expert...Do any of you know Jason Radine?
I've recently been learning broad sword with a 40'' decorative. Amazing stuff.

I fenced Dave once, he squashed me, it was fun though. Jason? That the guy
with the dog and with one hand thats injured or something?

Not at all. He was instructed in Foil, epee, saber, broad sword 'n' more under
hoornstra, and teaches now.

As far as fencing in this kingdom, foils are not legal. I don't think David
has a problem with them at the practices. (Which are NOT official SCA
functions.)

What is legal?

Welp, I talked to Dave at the Renaissance Faire, and he said that he was
authorizing fighting Sword and Dagger, I asked him if the Triplette stuff was
ok, and he turned the blade of the dagger he was showing me over and it had
the Triplette label on it. :-)

Yep, I just bought a TCA epee. We mainly use epees; but double-wide epees
are also legal. Once you are experienced with epee, you can use schlager
blades. Then then there are a plethora of armour/protection requirements; too
many to go into here.

a frog, or lemme buy a copy of a handbook on the requirements offa ya? :-)

Maybe this isn't the right place to ask, but where is a good place to start
learning fencing?

A good place would be at Schoolcraft College, under Professor Mclaran. There
will be a fencing club available next semester for $25/semester, which will
meet at 8 there in the auxilary gym, regular classes I think start at 6:30
for the beginning session and 7:50 the advanced for about 50 bucks or so...
I go to the 8 o'clock class myself. :-)
