Dr. Patrick J. Carnes lists some following core beliefs that influence 
behavior of those addicted to sex:

1. I am basically a bad and unworthy person. 

2. No one would love me if they really knew me. 

3. I can't count on anyone to meet my needs. 

4. Sex is my most important need.


These beliefs may not be conscious, but it is very clearly reflected in 
the addictive behavior.

I think these can also apply to addictions to other substances, 
although sex is the listed context.

Replace the word "sex" with [substance or behavior of choice] and that
pretty much covers any addiction.
