This: 3X^2 (Y-1) + (Y-1)^2 ---------- ------- 6U^2V^3 2UV^2 somehow is suppose to be able to be simplified down to: X^2 -------- UV(Y-1) I can't see it.

Could you please retype the expressions using more grouping symbols? Your denominator on the leftmost fraction is 6U^2V^3. Does this mean (6U)(2V)^3? An expression is rarely qritten the way you have it expressed. This could be part of your problem.
Unless there are other constraints here, i don't see any way that this could work out. Try plugging in values of U=1, V=1, and X=1, then look at values of Y very near (but slightly above) 1. The first expression approaches zero as Y approaches 1, but the second (simplified) one is approaching infinity as Y approaches 1. It would take more than some simple how-the-factors-and-exponents-are-associated changes to alter this behavior.
