Grex Reality Item 1: Welcome to Reality!
Entered by arthur on Tue Nov 5 03:42:04 UTC 1991:

   Welcome to the Religion/Philosophy/Mathematics/
Physics/Meaning of Life and the Universe conference.
It's intended to promote the discussion of the
Union of the above topics, not the Intersection of
them (to get mathematical). Although perhaps we're more
likely to get the Collision of them....

   Anyway, hope it's enlightening.

There has been some talk of merging 'Reality' and
'Directions'. If we go ahead with this, we'll nuke
the following (unless asked to save them) items:
  1. Welcome to Reality (this item)
  5. "Virtual" reality

and possibly 2. Axioms on Reality.

#6 of 253 by remmers on Thu Jan 28 08:01:35 1993:

Really?

#7 of 253 by danr on Thu Jan 28 12:47:28 1993:

Hmmm. I'll have to reread the directions conference and see what
I'll nuke. Maybe we should set a date to do this?

#8 of 253 by remmers on Thu Jan 28 13:44:07 1993:

Have it done by the next board meeting OR ELSE!!! :)

#9 of 253 by tsty on Thu Jan 28 20:09:07 1993:

Is that a "direction" or "for real?"

#10 of 253 by embu on Sat Mar 13 19:15:07 1993:

Wait a minute. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought this was going to be some
sort of philisophical discussion conference- and so far I read blanks, love,
and let's nuke this conference- wanna set a date? Jeez! What happened? Are all
you people thought fully dead?! Sorry, but now I'm upset. Maybe I just don't
know what's going on anyhow...ah well. Lets see if there's anyhthing
interesting going on elsewhere.

#11 of 253 by danr on Sat Mar 13 22:46:14 1993:

Emma, the first item in each conference is generally an administrative
item. Please read on and get involved with any of the discussions.
Don't get discouraged.

#12 of 253 by tsty on Mon Mar 15 19:12:51 1993:

And also, embu, recognize that drift is a corallary of a braided
conversation.

#13 of 253 by embu on Thu Apr 8 17:28:55 1993:

sorry, thanks for the explanations.."new user" is my only excuse...about drift,
I agree on principle, but where was the original braid?

#14 of 253 by skeez on Sat Aug 7 23:12:47 1993:

This conference isn't very pleasing. It could be referred to as "Major-League
Lame-Fest-o-rama '93......

#15 of 253 by scg on Tue Aug 10 01:33:20 1993:

If you don't like it, then either improve it or don't join it.

#16 of 253 by skeez on Tue Aug 17 21:07:53 1993:

You are very right....What I said could be expected of Hoolie, But me??
I don't know what I was on....Forgive me, all.

#17 of 253 by graywolf on Sat Sep 4 01:24:12 1993:

I thought that this was a conference for disscussing reglion, mathmatics,
philosiphy, and such. So on according to this, there should be items on these
topics, but I see none. Mabe I haven't dug deep enough into this conference,
but I just don't know.
                                                                peace, Graywolf

#18 of 253 by danr on Sat Sep 4 21:18:50 1993:

You're right, it is a conference for discussing these topics. The items
here seem to be ont these topics to me. If there is something you'd
like to discuss, enter a new item.

#19 of 253 by vidar on Fri Oct 1 19:44:46 1993:

Peace is impossible.

#20 of 253 by embu on Fri Oct 1 21:03:00 1993:

One, nothing is impossible, if you think about it in the right way, and two,
peace is definitely possible. Why do you say it isn't? Or were you just saying
that on principle?

#21 of 253 by vidar on Sat Oct 2 13:26:26 1993:

THEORITICALLY, nothing is impossible. REALISTICALLY, a hell of a lot is
impossible.

#22 of 253 by i on Sun Oct 3 15:36:54 1993:

Chuckle.

The statement "theoretically, nothing is impossible" is self-contradicting.
Though it certainly has a better ring to it than "this statement may be false".

#23 of 253 by vidar on Sun Oct 3 20:57:19 1993:

Whta's wrong with it? In theory anything can be possible, in practice not so.

#24 of 253 by remmers on Sun Oct 3 21:21:44 1993:

My philosophical stance is somewhat the opposite. You can prove *lots*
of things impossible from a theoretical standpoint -- example: trisection
of an angle using ruler and compass, in the Euclidean theory of geometry.
But if you really *need* to trisect a particular angle, you can get close
enough "for practical purposes".

#25 of 253 by embu on Mon Oct 4 23:23:59 1993:

Stubbornly, nothing is impossible. Some things just simply haven't happened
yet. However, I think "this statement may be false" has a very good ring to
it, and so my statement may be false, since that's certainly not impossible
either. #24 interesting. I think I'll have to frustrate about it for a while.

#26 of 253 by vidar on Tue Oct 5 20:34:47 1993:

Does that mean that I could become an ethereal being at any moment? No.
It's virtually impossible for a Prime Material Plane being to become
Ethereal without the invokation of magic. and magic, unlike psionics, does
not truely exist.

#27 of 253 by remmers on Wed Oct 6 00:42:41 1993:

Hey, for practical purposes you *are* an ethereal being from my
standpoint: I know you only as a shadowy electronic entity who
takes the form of bits of text dropped here and there.

#28 of 253 by i on Wed Oct 6 23:01:48 1993:

"Nothing is impossible" implies that "Finding something impossible is
impossible", a contradiction. Unless you're reading special meanings
the words, this looks like a version of Russel's Paradox with "the set
of all sets".

#29 of 253 by vidar on Thu Oct 7 00:06:44 1993:

Wouldn't that be a Cybereal being? Statement 28 is quite a usuful tid bit,
and fully confirms my belief that a lot of things ar impossible. Any way,
I am a Prime Material Plane being. I could exist on the Elemental plane of
fire, but even if I did, I would still be a Prime Material Being.

#30 of 253 by remmers on Thu Oct 7 03:16:11 1993:

So?

#31 of 253 by vidar on Thu Oct 7 20:30:29 1993:

You're right. That has no basis to the conversation whatsoever.
Sorry.

#32 of 253 by embu on Sat Oct 9 01:32:26 1993:

 Yes.

#33 of 253 by vidar on Sat Oct 9 18:26:30 1993:

Sick and Raunchy Country Music!

#34 of 253 by czar on Sun Feb 6 04:37:21 1994:

Actually, the statement should more appropriately be "This
statement is false" if you wish for a self-contradicting
loop. "may be false" allows it to be true.

#35 of 253 by vidar on Tue Feb 8 00:43:19 1994:

It also allows it to neither be true nor false.

#36 of 253 by collinst on Thu Apr 28 21:31:24 1994:

I believe we are all part of God's pipe dream, I call it the "Big Bo.
When we contiemplate the meaning of existence why do we sometimes pick our
 noses?.
How can we discuss post-modern philosophy when it portens to be outside the
realm of philosophical structure? Are we actually creating or are we just
agitated? help write done .done exit

I think you're driving me up the wall.

#38 of 253 by tjokeefe on Sat May 7 16:11:39 1994:

I think I'll check out directions.

#39 of 253 by daniel on Sat May 14 19:30:34 1994:

Go emma
Driving people up the wall is loads of fun.
As to peace, it may be theoretically possible, but it wont happen as long as
(ignore that ty) testosterone exists, or as long as women rule the world. (or
think they don't) If you can figure this all out, please explain it to me PS
I'll give you a nickel
