Grex Radio Item 40: Guess What?
Entered by dewshine on Mon Jun 9 21:21:09 UTC 2003:

Guess what I did this weekend? I passed my element 2 exam. Yessum, I am now
a part of the Amateur Radio society. Go me.
The test wasnt as scary as I thought it was.. Of course I missed it by three
the first time I took it, but passed it the next day.
I'm really excited.. But I wish I could show up in the data base now instead
of at the end of the week... Oh well. What can I do?
Anyway. I just thought I'd let everyone know that there was another Ham in
the world.

Heh. We were at the little tiny Wauseon hamfest for this, since they
were the closest place that was giving exams. I was in the outdoor part
of the fest when I saw something comming at me. Turning around so my
eyes could lock up right, I saw Staci, merrily bounding over to me. Given
that she was half dead on the way down, it was quite a sight to see her
moving quickly, and before I really had time to think about it she said
"I Got It!" and was bouncing around a bit. Loudly pronouncing "A NEW HAM"
and clapping, others in the flea market stopped what they were doing and
clapped for her. It was neat.

The Parental Pork Units have a good idea what the harmonics call will
be, but she doesn't want to know it, so we are keeping quiet....

Congrats, Staci. Welcome to the fraternity.

Amateur radio is a wonderful hobby, and I know you'll go all the way!!

Congrats, Staci. What do you think will be your favorite operating mode?

We have a Wild Young Amateur on our hands. She has already stolen my rig
(her's is on the way). Right now she is bouncing between the ARROW 440
machine and 1294.5 while coordinating meeting at the TOP with her dad.

I didn't realize there is a 1200 MHz system in A2. (Not that I've
looked in the repeater guide for it.) I might have to buy the module
for my mobile, so I can access that band. (I had been thinking about
a 900 MHz module, but I can't help but think the interference and de-
sense must be attrocious.)

#13 of 17 by glenda on Mon Jun 23 16:29:50 2003:

1294.5 is the national simplex for 1200. The closest 1200 repeaters we know
of are in Jackson and Detroit. Nothing out here yet, though STeve and a
friend have talked about getting one up.

Sounds worthy of checking out. I really haven't paid much attention
to the 900 and 1200 MHz bands, since I don't have equipment that will
transmit there.

What is the range of a simplex QSO on 1.2GHz with a handheld?

#16 of 17 by krokus on Mon Jul 21 14:39:07 2003:

C'mon, you know the amount of variables that go into that one...

#17 of 17 by goose on Fri Aug 8 04:12:27 2003:

Heh...okay, slightly reworded....What is the typical range you all (the
Andre's) get with your 1.2G handhelds.
