Did anyone go to the Dayton Hamvention? What great deals did you find? Any adventures?

We (STeve, Staci, Marcus, and I) went down. I took and passed my General and Extra tests. STeve upgraded through the grandfathering to General. We bought STeve an Icom IC-T81A quad band handheld (I got one last year), and we got alkaline packs and AA Nimhs for them, plus a universal recharger. We picked up a few other little fun things here and there. At least STeve and Staci did since I spent a good part of Friday and Saturday in the test room. A good time was had by all. Staci is now really gung-ho about getting licensed and is swearing that she will get her Extra before dad does.
I went down on Friday with w8nn and w8ut. Life is too out-o-control to get much stuff to tinker with but I did pick up a color TV camera, some solar cells and a new mouse for my computer. Just getting away for a day was all I really needed!
r congrats glenda and STeve! I unfortunately missed Dayton this year due to a last minute scheduling problem. There were a couple of things I wish I could have played with, the Yaesu VX7R and the Icom IC-2720H for starters.
Staci has a pre-reg to take her test on June 8 with the ARROW, I will be calling tomorrow to pre-reg STeve to take his Extra. I will be doing my first observation to prepare for my VE acredidation (paperwork almost filled out to send as soon as license hits the mailbox). It's good to get back into being radio-active.
I didn't get to Dayton, since I was travelling from home to Columbus, and then onto Myrtle Beach. I did hear a lot of people on the repeaters around Columbus, and talked with a few along the way. (Two guys from Hilton Head and I were talking on 146.52 for awhile.)
I've always had good luck with .52 while traveling. There was an interesting 70cm opening the other night and I worked a repeater about 80 miles as the crow flies. It was in Berlin Heights, OH and I was near Whitmore Lake.
Y'all come through Toledo, and not one single call or email. Shame on you. ;)
re 6 Speaking of 70cm openings, there was a night that I was home that I got one. (This was probably back around Xmas.) I had a qso with a guy that was just a little west of Findlay, OH, and it sounded like we were right next to each other. That was cool stuff.
Great news, Glenda! Now we have to get all three of you back into the ARROW.
Meeting will be hard, I have a class on Wednesday evenings. We have been talking about it.
I also got my VE certificate a few weeks ago. Now to light a fire under STeve and Staci. Staci has a good excuse - High School, with classes, friends, and theater tech stuff she has very little time for other activities.
We're now meeting at WCC. Stop by after class!
As we did in 2003, ARROW (www.w8pgw.org) is sponsoring a bus trip to Dayton. There are still seats available. Cost is $40 for ARROW members and $45 for non-members. For more information, go to http://www.w8pgw. org/node/view/222.
So, who went and what kind of deals did you find? Although I spent most of the weekend in the testing room VEing tests, I did get to help STeve buy and ICOM 703. In the flea market we found an unbelievable deal on an ICOM 275H and a 475H. We walked by sighing. STeve looked at me and said "I just found the deal of Dayton and I can't believe I am walking away." I looked at him, he looked at me, and we went back and bought them. We also got a Diamond tri-band antenna for the new car and a lot of ARRL books, along with a bunch of little things like tweenies, diodes, batteries, etc.
I didn't go to the hamvention, but I was nearby in Springfield OH attending our daughter's graduation from Wittenberg Univ - it rained there all day too, so the event had to be held indoors rather than in the traditional "Hollow". She is now a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
I wish I could have went, but with the funding issues I have right now, I had to fight the temptation. :(
