Four years ago Grex had a recital where a dozen or so talented folks treated an appreciative audience to a sampling of their talents. We had pianists, singers, string players, poets, and math like you've never seen done before. It was a hoot. Since then I've had a few people ask about maybe doing it again. This item is intended as a feeler - to see what kind of interest there would be among performers. Too, last time I chipped in the money for the recital hall (a nice room with a grand piano at the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor). If we did this again I'm thinking of doing it a little differently. Maybe putting out a bowl for "whatever you can" donations? I'd pay for the room out of that and if we were short I'd make up the difference. If the donations more than covered the fee then the balance would go to the Grex general fund. Whatchathink?

I'm interested in participating.
I'd participate, and I'd be happy to donate a few dollars towards a venue.
(now linked to Music as item 246)
The last recital was a whole lot of fun. I'd happily participate again.
I missed the first one, and sorry I did. I'd certainly enjoy attending a second one. I'd like to participate, too, somehow, but I'm not sure how my skill set translates into something I could present at a recital.
I would love to participate, if the recital took place over the summer or on a weekend during which I could make it back to Ann Arbor. This sounds like a great idea.
Depending on schedules, I would be happy to perform.
I'd love to attend. Not perform though - I can sing a baby to sleep sometimes, but I think he falls asleep mainly so he won't have to keep listening to me.
I second Jan's thoughts in every detail, except that the baby is a she, and I know that she loves hearing my terrible singing.
I could provide some financial and technical support....
Thanks, other and others. ;-) I'm going to mail katie and arabella and coyote to see if they would be interested, but you know they are in a different league when you even hesitate to ask for fear you'll insult them. ;-) Too, I'm a real softie for kids performing so if any Grexers have youngsters who could bring a talent to a general recital they'd be more than welcome to join in. And so far I don't think we've attracted any poets. John mentioned having this linked to poetry. I'll ask.
Hey Eric (other)... you might also suggest a venue. The church room Mary got last time was good, but the carpet muffled the sound a bit (other than that it was about perfect in size)
My offer to perform involves poetry and NO singing. Want a room cleared? Have me come in singing.
(We'll schedule your singing act for last... ;-)
If you want to have a crew of all Eric's, then I'll volunteer to help Eric B if needed.
Maybe the final act should consist of all us non-singing Grexer's doing a few choruses to a song none of us know the words to. That should clear the room.
"Peas and carrots, peas and carrots, peeeeeaaaaaassssss aaaaannnnndddddd caaarrrots!"
"ab da ab da ab da That's all folks!"
direct from the Rutland: "Cheese and Onions".
what is with all the damn eric/eriks around here?
They were on special, so we bought a large lot to save money.
hey, would ya let me know next time they run a special like that on boys?
yeah, I agree, no singing -- nobody would wanna hear me or arabella sing anyway. d=
Interested in doing something. Story-telling, and poems if no other poets show up (don't wanna take up too many slots).
It's times like this when I regret being way down in Florida.
Re resp:23 - Heh. I'd love to hear arianna sing; hear she's quite good. (I know first-hand that arabella is...) Physical distance from Ann Arbor might be a handicap, though.
It'll just test her lung capacity a little....
She could phone it in... Friday at the dojo banquet the keynote speaker missed his flight, so one of the instructors held his cell phone up to the mic, and we still got a nice speech.
resp:23 resp:28 I haven't heard either sing, unfortunately, and I didn't even know Erinn sang. I've been known to sing, since I am studying as a baritone/bass, but I am also stuck here in Central WA and cannot quite afford a trip to A2 again. *sigh* This sounded nice, but I guess it's better not to toot my own horn. I usually sing and play my classical guitar for my own enjoyment anyway.
Perhaps you could mail/email a recording?
i havent been doing my music for awhile, but i might consider at least attending, if not participating in something liek this. but only if i can change my name to eric or erik
Change it to "Ericka" and don't pronounce the /a/.
Maybe someone could set up a Real Audio connection so Lumen could play for the recital even though he was in Washington.
well, if you could set that up, i would be willing to play recorder (soprano, alto & tenor) from FL
re #24: me thinks John chides me for leaving a2. [: How about if we all call in on a donated cell phone. <g> re #26: if we get the poetry chapbook finished in time for the performance, it might be interesting to have a few of the attending poetry cf'ers read from it. re #27: smart ass. re #28: surprising, lumen, that you've forgotten -- we've have a couple of conversations about music, one was even in person when we were both in a2 last. Gettin a mite rusty upstairs, ol' man? d=
resp:35 Rusty? No, maybe scatterbrained-- I have SO much to think about in one day, really, and it was a small chunk of data that somehow got forgotten. Really, Erinn, when I was in A2, I was talking music with a lot of people, so I may have forgotten a few things. *sigh* That reminds me, one day I'll get "Ann Arbor Rag" finished-- at least to a degree-- that John could play. I feel bad that I have shelved the manuscript for so long since my music dictation is terrible (we can't transmit the data by MIDI from a Diskclavier). I do miss you all terribly and do wish that I could be there in person. resp:30 I can, although you'd have to listen to all the rest of my classmates in the guitar ensemble. I don't have great recording equipment of my own, but if I can figure something out, I will try to pick my best guitar tune and my best vocal piece.
I asked Jonathan whether he would like to sing a duet with me in such a recital, and he said No, but indicated that he would like to play the piano. (He's 13 now) If the date doesn't conflict with our *full* summer schedule, probably each boy would like to make an appearance as pianist.
Very nice. I've done a little calling around to try to find a suitable space. I'm placing some follow-up calls tomorrow. A space that is priced right and comes with a piano seems to be the sticky point. I apologize ahead of time for not being able to post lots of dates here and have a debate about which one works best but by the time we decide the space would, no doubt, be booked. So I'm probably going to just go with an open Saturday or Sunday afternoon, in June, if I can get such a date. If you are planning to perform and know there is a day in there you can't make, please let me know in mail ASAP. Thanks.
Mary, havwe you tried Northside Community Church? They do lots of recitals there, and only ask for a $50 contribution (which I would be willing to help out with).
