I have been known to follow a crowd;
To cower at an ounce of greater strength
Or sensibility.
I have been spiteful,
Choosing my comments
That people will bleed.
I've been naive,
With never a clue about the real world;
Just blithely skipping through life,
A tiny girl still in short skirts.
I have known fear so deep it stopped me dead
And anger so fierce it made me act.
But--
I have also been known to lead other feet
To their unknown goals;
To stand against odds most fear.
I have been kind and shown love to people
I was told I should hate
Or distrust.
I have had experiences that people generally disbelieve
Or look upon with shock;
Experiences that changed me.
I have not been to many places,
But the places I have been
I have tried to improve
Just a little.
Am I so strange to you?
I could be anybody.
I am your sister.
I am your wife,
Your daughter,
Your lover.
I am--
I am your friend.

This poem has received some nice reactions from the people she's shared it with. (She is not shy about sharing her poetry in public-- I keep mine more private.)
Poetry is made to be shared. (just my own personal philosophy there)
I am new to the conference, and most likely will not post much in the way of poetry to this conference, but I would like to share my reactions, if that's ok withe everybody.. if not then let me know and I will keep them to myself... anyway... Julie, thank you for showing all of us that have doubt in our lives... all of us that think we are alone in our fears and strengths... that we are all alike. That we all share similar experiences and have similar concerns... I really enjoyed reading this piece....
<blush> well...Thank you very much, Brett.
I'm suprised I didn't comment on this the first time around..but ohh well this is very well done, good show (linked to the new poetry conf)
Thank you, Joe. Your appreciation is well worth the wait. I really enjoyed writing this piece. It comes from pieces of my life, so, in effect, it's a part of me. I think that's why so many people seem to like it.
