I have a 128 MB compact flash from PNY, that I bought 4 years ago and a
512 MB Sandisk Ultra II compact flash that I got a few months ago. I haven't
noticed a difference in speed.

I've never noticed any difference between brands -- either in digital
cameras, or in industrial PCs (which used them as boot drives.)

www.surpluscomputers.com sometimes has good deals on CF cards.

I remember from my early experiments with Smartmedia cards that one
card didn't work with NetBSD. Apparently Microsoft go around telling
manufacturers that they are free to implement a subset of the
relevant standard because Windows only uses certain commands or
features. Happily other manufacturers, mindful of the fact that not
every computer and handheld device runs MS Windows, implement the
standard properly.

Hooray for small victories (especially at the expense of the Beast)

The Smartmedia card that works is from PNY. I'm not sure about the one
that didn't because it suffered an appropriate fate.
