Grex Pets Item 32: If you could teach your pet one (and only one) new thing...
Entered by scott on Mon Sep 20 23:54:28 UTC 1999:

So if you could train your pet in one specific concept, even a non-simple one,
what would it be?

Mine would be to teach my cats that messes should be made on the floor, not
the carpet. I wouldn't mind vomit, mouse parts, and the occasional poop
nearly as much. For some reason cats like to make messes on soft surfaces.

I would teach the kitties that the computer table is an evil, evil place.

But if you do that, they'll jump up there to protect you whenever you're near
it.

I would teach scott to stay off the kitchen counters.

<falls down laughing at an image of Scott Helmke crawling around on Jiff's
counters>

Use a squirt gun to discourage counter use by cats. Or, when you can't be
there, balance cookie sheets on the edge of the counter. When the cat tries
to make a smooth landing, crash! Very effective.

I would like to teach the cats to use the toliet instead of a litter
box... Much easier to clean. <grins>

(resp:5 That was the image that I got, too :-)

Actually, in my house being on the kitchen counters is a dunking offense.
A few minutes ago Conan got The Treatment.

Strangely, BuckShot loves a good dunking, but will do everything in her power
to escape a squirting.
My first answer to #0 was "to come when she's called", but she's getting
pretty good at that. There are more things I'd like to see her un-learn than
learn, I guess.

I would like my cats to un-learn drinking from the sink. <grins> It's
now the favorite thing for all three cats. Two of them will sit in
there on the counter and cry until someone comes in and turns the water
on for them. <laughs>

Harlis does that sometimes. I am scared I'll have hot water running one
day and he'll stick his little face right in it. :(

Heh, the white cat taught the other two a trick- they always test the
water with a paw (lightly dabbing at it) before they put their faces in
the stream to get a drink.

Bad kitty! Don't walk through my freelance work before the paint dries!

But it's paper!

no, it's metal. Heh.

Time to revive this one too... ;)

I would teach Baya, who is a dog, unlike most of (or all of) the pets in this
item, to howl on command. (We may well do this. We've been working on it,
and we're starting a class devoted specifically to tricks this week, so who
knows what we'll learn!)

one of my favorite sounds in the whole wide world.

Well, since we are not limiting ourselves to simple concepts...

I would like my dogs to learn how to do my taxes for me. Also, it
wouldnt hurt if they could learn how to give a decent manicure.
Currently, they just slobber all over my hand and they *never* put the
polish on evenly.

If my tropical fish could learn to cook and clean house, I guarantee
I'd keep them forever.

I would teach my cat to speak english...

#22 of 23 by slynne on Mon Oct 14 17:50:54 2002:

I wouldnt. It's bad enough that I have to listen to her bitch at me in
cat. If it were English it would be: "Let me outside!", "Where were
you? I was home alone with the DOGS all day", "How come all I ever get
is dry food" ETC ETC ETC

#23 of 23 by jiffer on Sun Oct 20 04:21:23 2002:

No, I am optimistic that my cat is above that.... maybe he can learn to
request manicures instead of attempting to chew is own claws off... weird cat.
