It's SOCCER time again. AAYSA is looking for 7 and 8 year-old girls to form new teams for a girl's U-9 (under 9) House League. The intent is to form a minimum of 4 teams this spring. The season will run from the week of April 20 through Memorial weekend. Costs are expected to be about $45 per player and scholarships are available. There are also openings for the Girl's U-11 league and may be openings for the various boy's leagues. There will be an open registration on Saturday, March 21 from 1 PM to 4 PM at the Burns Park Senior Center. For more information, mail fes or call Fred Sleator at 662-8035, Hugh Templeton at 434-6210 or leave a message at 665-7165.

We'll look at this again in about 2.5 years when Staci is seven. She stood and watched soccer being played once, and had to stuff her back into the car. We'll try her out once she's the right age.
In the meantime, perhaps you should simply give her something to kick.
You mean something besides her big brother?
Sounds like giving her something *else* to kick would kill two birds with one stone (which is a pretty sick metaphor to use when talking of kids, but what the hell).
You might want to wait until summer. The andre' house seems to have plenty of fragile things inside, things that would not like to have soccer balls hurled into them by kids however undersized.
True...you kind of have to wait until it's warmer before you can shout, "Take it OUTSIDE!"
No, you don't. I already yell "Take that OUTSIDE, right now, this minute". Unless it is pouring down rain they can play outside all they want and are incourged to do so. A little fresh air never hurt anyone (at least not at the temperatures it is likely to be here). Most of the time I can't get Staci to zip up her coat or wear mittens or a hat. If I don't watch her she will wear her open clogs instead of boots or sneak out without coat or shoes at all. The first thing she does when she get in the car, no matter how cold it is, is to take off her coat. We fight about it EVERY time we get into the car during the winter.
$45 per player!! Sheesh, what does this pay for? Parks and Rec already mows the lawns and the referrees don't make that much. Coaching is still "free" isn't it? And the ball I remember getting as part of my "registration fee" were of the cheapest material the city could find.
I'll bet some form of liability insurance is causing at least part of that price.
Plus, who do you think *pays* for the mowing of the lawns? :)
How about a league for adults approx 21 yrs old?
Re #1, try the AASA instructional program - it's run by people who like and understand kids and they learn the basics that will help them really enjoy the game as they get older. The $45 pays for leasing the fields from the city (including the mowing, which the city stiffs the AASA on, claiming that "the tractor broke"), fees for the referees (they have to be licensed and otherwise certified and have the right uniforms, etc., which they have to pay for on their own), supplemental insuran- ce (to cover medical and liability), and some of the money goes for program development (trying to ensure that coaches are state licensed, properly trained and capable of dealing appropriately with kids). You get a lot for the money. There is a scholarship fund to cover kids who's parents can't pay (and it is used). Re #11: try the AASA adult house leagues. They should start up about April 20. There are three separate "seasons" that run till the end of October. The league is open to anyone over 15, there is a separate women's league (women can play in the open league, but the ones that do are TOUGH). Check at Eric's (on E. Liberty) for the signup forms. The only requirements are that you be able to stand up at the beginning of the game (and I haven't actually seen that in writing). The teams are picked by a committee in order to ensure that they are approximately evenly matched and they encompass everything from 15 year-olds to old geezers (60+), from rank novices to people who have played semi-pro. It's a lot of fun. Anyway, find me some 9-and-unders ...
Thanks.
So, Fred, how do I sign Corey up? He's been a soccor not (Football if you ask him) since he came back from Europe. Where do y'all play? And how do we sign up for the scholorship? uh, make that "nut".
Uh-oh...this rings of a new Rodney Dangerfield movie.
Call Hugh Templeton (AAYSA registrar) at 434-6210. He can get you the info on which teams have openings and can get you a registration form (actually, I can get you a registration form - but I don't know which teams have open slots). If there is a spot available and he gets on the team (there are tryouts at various levels, other levels take players without tryouts), the scholarship is handled by the coach taking the request to the board (Hugh can probably give you a more concise description than that ...). Anyway, do it SOON - the season starts April 25th and team rosters are due in this week (players can be added until sometime in early April - the 7th, I think).
Response not possible - You must register and login before posting.
