Well, it's September. Ann Arbor public schools started last week. My Timothy starts first grade tomorrow. He is, naturally, very excited and proud. Me too. And Gareth is an "older preschooler". He's pretty happy, too. Who else has kids going off to school? What special things did you do to mark it? How do they feel about it? How do you feel about it? Who here is starting a new school year- how does it look so far?

Well, Corey started a new school this year -- his freshman year. He's in the New School. He seems to be enjoying it quite a bit -- and seemed to start the year with an energy I haven't seen much of. I hope he keeps it up. TJ is still persona non grata with the A2 public schools until January. I don't know whether he'll decide to stay a drop out at that point. *sigh* Well, at least he seems to be coming around and is working his little butt off as a landscaper's assitant this summer and fall. And he hasn't been in trouble since the incident with the school. This is beginning to seem like a trend to the better. The amazing thing is that he's told me that what finally tore him up was not all my lectures. Not my trying to set limits. Not my calm reasoning. Not even my occasional screaming fights with him. It's when I locked myself in my room and cried for all of one evening because I was exhausted and all used up. That got through to him. *sigh* Not something you can plan or strategize. Y know, he may go back to school yet.
Neat about Corey going to New School. I like the whole idea of what they are trying to do there. Of course, my brother-in-law, Rich Ballard, would take me to task if I said otherwise. ;-)
New School sounds so good. I'm glad it's finally getting off the ground. Let us know, as time goes on, how the two populations seem to be getting along. Best of luck to Corey. How come TJ isn't going to Gabriel Richarde (is that the right name? I know it was *someone's* name...)? Whatever-sounds like work is good for him. YOu're right, some things just can't be pre-meditated, but few kids *really* want to see their parents vanquished, they just want a worthy adversary at times. Hope things straighten out from here.
(I *think* you're probably thinking of Rudolph Steiner. Quite a difference.)
No, I'm definitely not thinking of Steiner- my Tim goes there. But isn't there a highschool in Ann Arbor which is specifically for kids who can't make it at the other three- kids with truancy problems, etc.?
You're right -- it's Gabriel Richard. But that's a part of the A2 school district and so TJ isn't eligible.
Actually, Gabriel Richard is the local Catholic high school. You're probably thinking of Roberto Clemente, which as Misti says is part of the Ann Arbor School District.
Ooops, you're right. Sorry.
OK, so it's a different guy <g>- I thought I'd heard of kids who were expelled from Pioneer going to Roberto Clemente. How is TJ's situation different, or is it none of my business?
Lots of people get suspended from the other schools and go to Clemente. Suspension and expulsion are different things. Suspension generally means a student can't go to the school they were suspended from. Expulsion generally means a student can't have anything to do with the school district.
Oh. Oops.

That was the definition in Michigan up to a couple of years ago. It changed when they made it mandatory for various not very serious offences. Now I think the schools still can keep expelled students out permanantly, but they can also let them back in after a year.
