Grex Oldrpg Item 95: Over the Edge, the on-line game ! Read this for info.
Entered by matthew on Sun Apr 21 05:28:23 UTC 1996:

                                WELCOME TO THE EDGE

Welcome tourists, sight-seers, entrepreneurs, seekers, sybarites, and
you terminally misguided; welcome to the Edge. May your stay be pleasant
or eventful, whichever you wish.

To make your stay in Al Amarja more enjoyable, kindly keep in mind
the following facts about our fine island.

FIREARMS-Firearms of all kinds are outlawed since there is no
wild game to hunt. Only the Peace Force may carry firearms. If you have
smuggled firearms onto the island and are caught with them, you will face
sever punishments.

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES- Al intoxicants generally illeagal in the
civilized world are illegal in Al Amarja. Do not be deceived by appearences.

THE TEMPLE-Social and spiritual needs may be met at the Temple of the
Divine Experience on D'Aubainne Avenue. Celebrants of all faiths and sects
(except Satanists) are welcome at the services. Please note that the high
proestess of the Temple is Chery D'Aubainne, daughter of Her Exaltedness
Monique D'Aubainne, Historic Liberator and Current Shepardess of Al Amarja.
Utmost respect is therefore due to the Temple, its celebrants, and its
creeds.

CURRENCY-Al Amarja uses the US dollar as its currency. Exchanges of
other curencies, as well as valuable substances in general, may be made
at Swaps on the Plaza of Gold. Please not that Swaps is run by Constance
D'Aubainne, daughter of Her Exaltedness Monique D'Aubainne, Historic
Liberator and Current Shepardess of Al Amarja. Utmost respect is therefore
due to it Swaps, its employees, and its policies.

MEDICAL SERVICES-Should you find yourself in need of medical services
during your stay (and may the gods forbid such a calamity) you may seek
medical attention at the D'Aubainne Clinic on D'Aubainne Avenue. Dr.
Nusbaum and his staff are eager to ease your suffering. Special programs are
available for those who are unable to pay for the services they require.

HISTORY-Al Amarja was liberated from the Italian fascists on October
7, 1940 by Her Exaltedness Monique D'Aubainne. Since that time she has
brought stability, excitement, peace, security, and prosperity to Al Amarja.
It is she who saw the wisdom of adopting the language and currency of the
ascendant nation and thus us put in our enviable position among Mediteranian
islands. Al Amarjans continue to enjoy a healthy mix of cultures and
languages, while relying on our connection to the USA for unity and
stability. And we freely offer the delights of these cultures to visitors.

                        WELCOME AND ENJOY

Welcome to Over the Edge. Who wants to give it a try ! Respond here or email
me. Just remember, once you've been over the edge, nothing will ever be the
same again !!

Ok let's give it a try. If your interested in playing, let me know and we can
do a brief intro to character creation to get everyone started.

#2 of 28 by coyote on Sun Apr 21 13:43:52 1996:

I'd be interested, but I'd need the intro to character creation...

#3 of 28 by kain on Sun Apr 21 21:56:16 1996:

ditto

#4 of 28 by matthew on Mon Apr 22 01:04:44 1996:

That's one pf the purposes of this item. In the next day or two I'll put the
basic info here. Does anyone have any questions before we launch into this
?

#5 of 28 by jamie on Mon Apr 22 01:55:41 1996:

I'll play....I'm assuming it's a h*ll of a lot simpler to learn (fewer rules)
than D&D...?

#6 of 28 by matthew on Mon Apr 22 10:43:35 1996:

Here's some more info on the island itself, next will be character creation.
We can handle that in the item itself, or if you want (and probably should)
take it to email.

Al Amarja is a small island in the Mediteranian, south and a little East
of Italy. It's a rough oval, about 60km by 80km, volcanic in origin (no
longer an active volcano). Temperatures are moderate year round, dry and
sunny in the summer and occasionally rainy in the winter.
It is a democratic independant nation. The current President is Monique
D'Aubainne, the woman who liberated the island from Italy in 1940.

#7 of 28 by eldrich on Mon Apr 22 20:04:26 1996:

President-80 year old? Hook her up with Bob Dole!
<<Yes, Bob will play>

#8 of 28 by mneme on Mon Apr 22 20:36:34 1996:

Yay! I'll see if I can't come up with an interesting char in email.
Did you type in the AA info or steal it; I may do the latter.
And yes, Jamie, it's a lot simpler to learn than D&D, and the urules make more
sense.

#9 of 28 by jamie on Mon Apr 22 21:19:51 1996:

In which case, I will be happy to play.

#10 of 28 by matthew on Mon Apr 22 21:53:10 1996:

I typed it in from an info sheet that is allowed to be copied and passed
around to players.

#11 of 28 by matthew on Tue Apr 23 10:56:23 1996:

Ok, everyone who wants to play: I can't handle a horde, so please
eamil me a request to join the game. Please don't send the request
until after 8pm Friday April 26th. That should give everyone who's
interested a chance to ask any other questions they have. I'll email
the basic character creation process to any one who asks for it.
You can get that email anytime, don't wait. I'm not setting a limit
on the number of players, I just want to see how many are realy interested
before I do that. (If it's even necesary)

#12 of 28 by jamie on Tue Apr 23 23:09:31 1996:

Why the time limit?

#13 of 28 by matthew on Wed Apr 24 04:42:02 1996:

No limit yet. If I get an overwhelming response I'll want to cut it off,
there aere only so many poeple I can handle.

#14 of 28 by matthew on Sat Apr 27 06:02:07 1996:

Ok, I have 4 people who've stated their interest in this....
experiment....
Anyone else ? Let me know and I'll add you to the list.

#15 of 28 by matthew on Mon Apr 29 07:28:13 1996:

#19 of 28 by matthew on Tue Apr 30 02:05:50 1996:

#21 of 28 by matthew on Tue Apr 30 04:58:38 1996:

#26 of 28 by mneme on Mon May 13 18:32:53 1996:

Hmm? Why not let it sit for awhile, while players try to think of
characters?
I've been pretty hit for an interesting character reacently, but I
        think
this will really take off once people get their characters in.
Not a lack of motivation, but a lack of inspiration.
If people don't feel like reading the infodump that Matthew sent
out, I can and am willing to go into chat or party or talk with people and run
them through character creation.
Mightn't be a bad idea to make everything public except for classified
information (and secrets are not necessarily classified), just to spur char
creation and make it more of a preformance game rather than a more traditional
competive one. I think people here are capable of keeping character and player
knowledge seperate, especially when there's a written record to remind people
of what they don't know (which is my only problem along that line -- I'm very
good at selectively forgetting things, as long as I remember what i have to
forget).

Now, as far as my character goes... (just so nobody thihas any
        illusions as
to how I get my ideas, here are some statistics you don't normally get in an
Over the Edge game:
Past: Ace of Wands, Page of Wands, Page of Cups
Present: The Fool, Five of Cups, 3 of Wands
Fate: Knight of Swords,The Magician,Page of Pentacles)
=================================================================
Kevin Dawson -- Budding Young Magician

Central Trait: Budding Young Magician 2 Die (Superior)
(Sign: Allways has on him some kind of blade<frex: pocketknife>, a
cylindrical piece of wood <frex: pencil, twig>, a coin or holy symbol,
and some kind of cup or other water-like thing <salt packet, paint>
This isn't intentional/ritual; just karma. If he's stripped naked
and locked in a cellar, he'll find appropriate substitutes there)
Side Trait: Good Painter (Sign: Allways has brush and
something that he can use to paint with, even if it's
only water and pigment. Wears subtly disturbing shades)
Other Side: Very Inteligent (Sign: Wears glasses, allways carries a
        pencil, knife...)
Flaw: Trusting (anyone have an idea for a better flaw?) -- He is
very open to the world, because of his connection to magic and nature,
and is usually supprised when it decides to bite him). The fact that he
lives half in the world of magic and faerie doesn't mean that he can
instantly tell the difference between real and fake. (Sign:
friendly, talks to strangers, animals, plants and inanimate objects)

Most Important Person: Girlfriend, who Done Left Him without even a word.
Motivation: Mystery (Find out about the world, magic, and anything
        curious)
Find out why his girlfriend left him.
                Improve his Art.
                Improve his art.
Secret: Several things in here are secrets, but the secret should
be an opprotunity to make up something. Once I think of a
secret, it will probably be classified, though; it IS a secret, after
        all.
Physical Description: Think Timothy from Books of Magic (but then, if
you know him, you were probably allready reminded...), but slightly
older (17), and more unusual habitual clothing (think Goth. Then add
color). Doesn't ride skateboard, but does ride bicycle.
Picture: /-----\ (Not the best likeness, I admit,
                || || but whadaya expect from a traveling minstrel?
                [|-O-O-|]

                \\_____//

History:
Kevin Dawson grew up in the suburbs of Manhattan (in specific,
Staten Island), and was therefore quite suprised when, having gotten
himself lost in NYC after being dragged there by his parents at the age
of 8, he turned a corner to find himself confronted by an old gypsy
woman. She promised to tell his fortune, right and true, should he but
cross her palm with silver, and then laughed at his protestations that
he had none, commanding him to empty his pockets, wherein lay the 10
dimes that his parents had given him for spending money. Once he had
given her those, she gave him the reading that appears above (though the
past was then his present, the present his future, and the fate still
his fate), and then vanished mysteriously, leaving him but a few brief
moments before his parents rushed apon him and showered him alternately
with angry admonishment and sighs of relief.
This was Kevin's first brush with magic, but far from his last.
Over the years, he has run into more than his fair share of
faeries, goblins, koblolds (not the D&D kind, the 'small faerie' kind)
kami, and ghosts, not to meantion picking up a magical worldview and
some magic of his own.
He's also met and fallen in love with a girl whose name he never
new, but whose auburn hair and hazel eyes captivated him from the moment
he saw her. One day during his senior year of high school, she told him
sadly that they could never meet again, and left him standing there
without another word.
When he applied to university, he was attracted to the lurid and
somewhat bizarre flyers he got in the mail from a school he had never
heard of: D'aubainne University, and wanting only to get away from the
hateful world where his true love left him without an explaination, he
elected to go to this strange institution in a country he had never
heard of.
