Grex Oldrpg Item 72: Spellz
Entered by kain on Wed Nov 8 22:16:46 UTC 1995:

This is an item for discussion of Ad&D spells
whenever I make a new character i always take at least an hour deciding on
what spells to get what spells mage or priest or druid should you get and in
what order?

It depends on if we're talking about eclectic Mages, and Priests, or if we're
talking about specialist mages and clerics.

Personally, I take mostly damaging and protective spells. Seldom "finding"
spells.

#2 of 87 by eldrich on Thu Nov 9 22:38:35 1995:

Depends on the kind of character U are playing. Pschopathic Invokers can be
fun, but they get old fast. I've always wanted to play a nice fanatical priest,
but have never had the chance.

I like a good summoner...of course, battles tend to take a really long time
when you cast a couple of Monster Summoning I spells to assist you when
facing a massive foe or twelve.

#4 of 87 by bjorn on Thu Nov 9 23:48:44 1995:

I'm making rules for using Kir Monks (from Death Gate) as AD&D Clerics.
It'll take a couple weeks.

#5 of 87 by kain on Fri Nov 10 17:30:50 1995:

itenersting that'd be fun, how bout the keeper elves?
they'd be fun as priests

#6 of 87 by orinoco on Sat Nov 11 02:48:16 1995:

I never go for direct damage spells...i prefer something more subtle

#7 of 87 by bjorn on Sat Nov 11 06:22:43 1995:

Re #5: You're refering to the Kenkari elves, I presume?

#8 of 87 by setzer on Sat Nov 11 16:30:49 1995:

I've always liked spells of protection (walls) and the occasional
fireballs and lightning bolts. It's not as subtle when you're
fighting a dragon.

Re#7 yes or maybe wizards

#10 of 87 by bjorn on Sun Nov 12 22:56:26 1995:

Kenkari elves, I would handle merely as any other elf.
Death Gate wizards of races other than Patryn or Sartan... well, that's
another matter entirely.

#11 of 87 by kain on Sun Nov 12 23:05:38 1995:

yup changed rules any?
like houses instead pf levels?

#12 of 87 by jamie on Mon Nov 13 03:00:02 1995:

Shoot cloth-wrapped arrows through a Wall of Fire...instant flaming arrows!
Of course, there is the visibility factor...I'm still working on that. A
Mass Clairvoyance spell would work...but AD&D doesn't have one...yet.

#13 of 87 by bjorn on Mon Nov 13 17:30:22 1995:

Let's see: 4th house is about the equivlent of 9th level mage.

#14 of 87 by orinoco on Tue Nov 14 02:44:33 1995:

wizard eye jamie....place it right on the other side of the barrier

#15 of 87 by eldrich on Tue Nov 14 23:41:21 1995:

re #12:
Not officialy, no. But that hasn't stoped anyone now has it?

#16 of 87 by starwolf on Wed Nov 15 18:37:21 1995:

Here's one for calming that one extremely arrogant fighter:
Stilgar's Instant Ego Deflation (or, "Ooo, that looked *painful*!")
level ? casting time ? components V,S
range ? Effect Area: single target
If save successful, target loses 1/2 current hp, all physical stats halved
for 1 day, and stunned 1D10 rounds. Save failed: hp reduced to 1, (0 if
"Death's Door rule used) all physical stats 1, stunned for 1D8 hours.
Visual effects determined by caster.

#17 of 87 by bjorn on Wed Nov 15 21:13:25 1995:

Reminds me of something Zifnab once said.

#18 of 87 by eldrich on Wed Nov 15 21:53:07 1995:

Nice. Polymorphing would also work.

#19 of 87 by jamie on Wed Nov 15 21:58:21 1995:

Yeah...Wand of Polymorph them...."She turned me into a newt! A newt? I got
better..." Turn them all into newts or toads or mice or something with a Wand
of Polymorph. This works especially well if they are flying.

#20 of 87 by orinoco on Fri Nov 17 14:10:42 1995:

If they're flying, something heavier than a newt would be good. SHouldn't
"ego deflation" have something to do with morale? Nice to see somebody
here has good taste in movies, jamie.

#21 of 87 by jamie on Sat Nov 18 20:16:21 1995:

Newts splat perfectly well when they hit the ground....it doesn't matter
that they don't weigh much...they don't have very splat-resistant bones,
either. This plan worked exceptionally well....until my brother, a very
inexperienced DM, realized that he should be giving these polymorph targets
saving throws....

#22 of 87 by kain on Sat Nov 18 21:22:03 1995:

hehe, doh

#23 of 87 by jamie on Sun Nov 19 00:52:00 1995:

Yes....he said d'oh very loundly and with much feeling when he realized that,.

#24 of 87 by orinoco on Sun Nov 19 18:18:55 1995:

...little did he know that d'oh was actually the command word for his
magical newt disenhugulator, so the newts went splat anyway

#25 of 87 by jamie on Sun Nov 19 19:07:54 1995:

Yeah...that was after the encounter when my Fighter/Mage (the same one I'm
using for the Fires of Dis adventure) and my friend's Fighter/Thief slew
a whole group of harpies, taking no damage...They were really *slow* flying
harpies, and my Wand of Polymorph and his crossbow managed to take out all
6 of them before they could attack us...

#26 of 87 by eldrich on Sun Nov 19 22:06:29 1995:

Fun!

#27 of 87 by bjorn on Mon Nov 20 03:50:34 1995:

This is kind of off topic, but I have found out that the new Dark Sun campaign
has completely revised the psionics systems. Mental AC and Mental Hp, other
stuff like that.

#28 of 87 by jamie on Tue Nov 21 01:02:29 1995:

Geez...they keep reprinting old stuff, and it costs outrageous amounts of
money. Oh well...I refuse to buy it until part of my old set gets lost or
destroyed.

#29 of 87 by bjorn on Tue Nov 21 02:13:14 1995:

I attempted to avoid upgrading, but since I have found people who
actually wanted my old stuff and were willing to pay for it, I have
upgraded.

#30 of 87 by starwolf on Tue Nov 21 16:17:19 1995:

I *HATE* the new psionics system I liked the old one better.

#31 of 87 by kain on Tue Nov 21 20:59:56 1995:

same

#32 of 87 by eldrich on Tue Nov 21 21:10:42 1995:

Why is it that the cool systems always get trashed? It's the same with good TV!

#33 of 87 by orinoco on Tue Nov 21 21:18:31 1995:

oh well...you can still use the old one if you want

#34 of 87 by bjorn on Tue Nov 21 23:49:17 1995:

Which I will in "Fires of Dis" for the benefit of everyone else here.
Yule Present Idea: If some one wants to be real nice to me this yule,
they'll buy me the limited edition, Takhisis: Queen of Darkness
miniature.

#35 of 87 by eldrich on Wed Nov 22 17:49:38 1995:

Oooo! That's a biggie! R U just doing this for show or for actual gaming
purposes?

#36 of 87 by bjorn on Wed Nov 22 21:08:56 1995:

It would behoove me to be contemplating that 'miniature' for both
purposes of show and gaming.

#37 of 87 by eldrich on Thu Nov 23 15:18:06 1995:

miniature my ass! that thing's HUGE! (also costs $60)

#38 of 87 by bjorn on Thu Nov 23 23:11:18 1995:

Why in Hel's name do you think I put the word "miniature" in
single quotation marks. I am quite aware of the price- not
to mention weight...

#39 of 87 by kain on Fri Nov 24 04:44:32 1995:

Partyn-Sartan Cross Breed bjorn? what patryn would mate with a sartan or
vice-versa for that matter
