Grex Oldrpg Item 59: tenetive Planescape "Fires of Dis" Adventure [linked]
Entered by bjorn on Fri Sep 15 00:10:54 UTC 1995:

I plan to run "The fires of Dis" if I can get it up from grandma's.
I am not certain about character levels, but I believe it to be
tailored for characters of 5th to 9th level. Characters from any
campaign setting are acceptable, so long as players keep track of
their own racial special abilities and tell me anything I might need
to know in addition. Keep track of your own experience point bonuses
if applicable, and tell me if your character is supposed to rise in level.
I need at least four of you, and a max of ten. I do use the optional
"training" rule for level advancement. All classes are acceptable, as
well as many kits. Ask me if a kit you want is also a full fledged class.
Remember, all planar characters must belong to one of the 15 factions
from the beginning of the adventure.

I'll go see if I can pull the adventure out of my RAVENLOFT boxed set.
One more thing, If I don't understand a spell, tell me waht it is
s'posed t'do. I also use magic points instead of spell memerization,
because a wizard who has to keep looking in his book ain't a wizard.

If I get this up, I'll inform you of when I am ready.

kewlness, post characters here?

#2 of 254 by bjorn on Fri Sep 15 13:55:28 1995:

I guess. I'll tell you if and when I am ready. Just a little more info
about magic points... look at the spell progression tables, find your
current character level... multiply the number of level X spells by the
spell level and add across and you'll have your total m.p.

This will be interesting, I think running a written adventure across
the net. I may need to modify some tings though, to make it a little
smoother for net play.

#3 of 254 by starwolf on Fri Sep 15 15:55:21 1995:

Let me guess. Spells of level X cost X points to cast?
I like. THough what's to keep 3rd lvl mages from casting lv.3 spells?
(2nd lvl = 2 1st 1 2nd spells by the book)

#4 of 254 by starwolf on Fri Sep 15 15:58:30 1995:

I'll need info on factions.
Will you take a race from Red Steel boxed set?

#5 of 254 by bjorn on Fri Sep 15 16:01:54 1995:

Every spell you cast costs its spell level, unless I dictate otherwise.
Therefore, you are correct, starwolf. And as for preventive measures,
the answer is the spell progression table. Even if you have the points,
you still need to use the progression tables. Mayhap I did not explain
myself clearly. A first level mage has 4 spell points, but only cause
I think it is silly to only be able to cast a spell once a day at 1st
level. Upon attaining the ability to cast second level spells, our
hypothetical mage adds 2 mp to his max. Now do you understand?

#6 of 254 by bjorn on Fri Sep 15 16:04:39 1995:

I'll take anybody from anywhere. I do need specs for races I don't
know about though. Red Steel, hmm? Then you don't need a faction.
(yet, anyway)

The planar locals will be happy to bombard you with faction philosophies
once the adventure begins. In fact, one of the Factols wears plate mail
made of Red Steel. I need to know the name of the Red Steel planet, too,
though.

#7 of 254 by bjorn on Fri Sep 15 16:14:41 1995:

One more thing, +1 and +2 magical weapons can be purchased at double
and quadruple the normal price, same with armor, respectivley. >In
the end your going to want something of at least +3 enchantment.

#8 of 254 by kain on Fri Sep 15 19:49:19 1995:

heh? explain more thoughrully please

#9 of 254 by bjorn on Fri Sep 15 22:02:48 1995:

I'll try. I might need to bring my Player's Handbook to the vax to
help explain.

Anyway, spell prgression. Suppose a dragon (since they don't do spells)
in the same way as mortals has spells: 2 2 1
Take the 2 x 1=2 2x2=4, 1x3=3. Now add those totals across 2+4+3=9.
that would be the dragon's total magic points. Castingg 3rd level
cost 3, 2nd costs 2, 1st costs 1 point. Got it?

#10 of 254 by kain on Sat Sep 16 02:22:22 1995:

well, kinda, do you accept multi-class?

#11 of 254 by bjorn on Sat Sep 16 18:31:52 1995:

Certainly, though for ease of play, I would like to restrict it to 2
classes.

Point of inquiry: Has anyone out there read "The Death Gate Cycle"
by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman? (All 7 Novels, not just some)

Depending on the size and power of the group, you might be running
into some Death Gate beasties. Some will seem like variations of
current AD&D creatures, and others will be totally new.

If you have read the books, bear in mind that your character does not
know what Haplo knows.

A few more things...
I want everybody to add a line (somewhere) to their character in this
format: Home World/Home Plane (use the one that applies): Planet/Plane,
Country, etc.

Furthermore there is a rift in the fabric of time and space that leadto and
from the post-sundering death gate Earth. So be careful where you tread.

Remove all warm clothing now, and leave it at home. You will regret it
if you take it with you.

#12 of 254 by kain on Sat Sep 16 20:58:28 1995:

you mean this si a death gate adventure?!? this is gonna rock, CAN WE HAVE
patryn characters? hehehehehehehehhe.

#13 of 254 by bjorn on Sat Sep 16 22:21:17 1995:

That depends entirely on the size and relative power of the group. You
may meet elves of the Tribus Empire, you may meet Patryns, you may meet
Sartan.

The adventure itself is for Planescape, but the adventure is supposed to
be difficult which is why I may throw in Death Gate critters.

I hope some of my players (potential) will be planar, so that they might
help people understand the lingo.

"I am Sang-Drax! I AM THE WAVE!!"

#14 of 254 by orinoco on Sun Sep 17 20:57:34 1995:

What level do we start at? one? or 5-9?

#15 of 254 by bjorn on Sun Sep 17 21:41:12 1995:

Anywhere from thos levels inbetween. I don't care. 5-9.
Are there any more questions on the floor?

#16 of 254 by kain on Sun Sep 17 22:30:45 1995:

you haven't really answered mine, is magic any diferent, can we use rune
magic?>

#17 of 254 by bjorn on Sun Sep 17 23:19:54 1995:

Real World rune magic perhaps. I have not come up with any ways of
incorporating Patryns and Sartan as PCs, so actually, I must regretfully
forbid them. If you have The Vikings Campaign Sourcebook and wish to be a
Runecaster, that is fine with me as long as your ability scores match the
requirements.

As long as I am talking of Patryns and Sartan, though you cannot count on
meeting anybody else, you will almost certainly meet Zifnab.

If I think of a way, I might decide to allow PC Patryns and Sartan....

#18 of 254 by kain on Mon Sep 18 01:16:42 1995:

hmm okay I'll post my character a little later he's as little complex

#19 of 254 by bjorn on Mon Sep 18 13:26:39 1995:

Fine. I am not sure how soon I'll have this thing up and running. I'm not
even sure IF this will get up and running.

As Usual, I'll get back to you people on it.

#20 of 254 by kain on Tue Sep 19 03:37:42 1995:

cool, I should have him by next week

#21 of 254 by bjorn on Tue Sep 19 16:12:22 1995:

All right.

Just to clear things up...
Starting Levels: 5-9
Races Allowed: Every PC Race from Every Campaign Setting
Classes Allowed: All
Weapons Allowed: Everything
Mages and Armor: A special type of armor exists for wizards which allows
for casting.
Spells & Magick: Magick simply works.

Any thing else you want to know?

#22 of 254 by starwolf on Tue Sep 19 17:07:57 1995:

Red Steel is on Mystara.
Could I play a 9-th level Dragon a la Council of Wyrms? ;}

#23 of 254 by bjorn on Tue Sep 19 19:39:03 1995:

That would make things too easy, and I must therefore forbid it.
I do apologize...

<bjorn changes shape until he looks like Sang-drax, with acid dripping
from his gapping jaw>

#24 of 254 by orinoco on Tue Sep 19 22:19:24 1995:

Are spcial kits from complete sha'ir's handbook legal?

#25 of 254 by junkie on Wed Sep 20 00:41:53 1995:

Should we roll these characters ourselves?
(note: 21) <-----nevermind this

#26 of 254 by bjorn on Wed Sep 20 13:49:14 1995:

Re# 24: If you can give me a basic overview of what the kit entails.

Re# 25: Yes, but use 4d6 reroll 1s and 2s, throw out the lowest die,
and arrange scores in the order of your chosing.

<bjorn slumps back to his Patryn body from the Sang-drax illusion>

#29 of 254 by kain on Fri Sep 22 22:40:28 1995:

well, that all depends onif your allowing patryns, if you can figure out a
way to do so hez a patryn planar otherwise prime material.

more on my character:

within it up to character's experience level <8> <normal holy sowrd ability>
and can also cast heal once per day, these are all the swords abilities that
I can remember. he also has two pets, one of them being his war horse. the
other I will mail you about later. my war horse stats are as follows,

name: night wind type: heavy war armor: plate covering ac:2 hp:24 damage
1-8 each hoof 1-10 bite, trained to carry rider with sword, and spear/lance.
move:15 <with rider in plate>

#32 of 254 by bjorn on Sun Sep 24 18:32:56 1995:

Sounds fine.

On Patryns (and for that matter, Sartan): In order to even belong to
either of these races, your scores must qualify both the requirements
for a Runecaster and a Berserker (really, the average). P/S Magic
is quite complex... tell me how you are twisting the wave of possibility
into reality... the more creative, the more likely I'll alow it.
P/S do not have a choice of class.

#33 of 254 by bjorn on Mon Sep 25 18:40:35 1995:

One last clarification:

I will not inform you of how many hit points you lose when you are
wounded nor will I tell you how healthy your opponents are. Make
due with how bloody the wounds get, and you should be okay.

<bjorn wonders why he couldn't move his right arm when he woke up
this morning, but can now. He wonders further why it felt like
it moved, even though it didn't.>

#34 of 254 by bjorn on Wed Sep 27 13:00:07 1995:

For those of you who wonder about Planescape, I have a lose definition of the
theme of the Campaign from TSR itself.

"Fantasy ... Taken to the edge.
Perception is reality.
Attitude is all important!"

#35 of 254 by kain on Thu Sep 28 02:14:38 1995:

does my character have the ability requirements? if so can I still use my
sword as a paladin if I were to be a patryn?

#36 of 254 by bjorn on Thu Sep 28 19:36:57 1995:

As I remember, the requirements are rather harsh for BOTH classes. I do
not see them, but remember that Patryn and Srtan are advanced races, or
at least *they* think they are. Both Patryn and Sartan are by definition
Runecasters.
Nope.
I am sorry.

#37 of 254 by starwolf on Tue Oct 3 15:30:49 1995:

Woah...I'm gonna have to borrow somebody's planescape shit & read it...I'm
way outta my element now...

#38 of 254 by bjorn on Tue Oct 3 15:36:14 1995:

You only really need to read "A Player's Guide to the Planes". The
information in the "Factol's Manifesto" doesn't come into effect until after
the conclusion of this adventure.

#39 of 254 by kain on Tue Oct 3 19:56:00 1995:

doh! owell I kinda like my character I spent long enuff developping him
