Entered by kain on Wed Jul 5 03:14:48 UTC 1995:

HEY everybody it's the earthbound Item!
have any of you guys ever played it? it's an awsome game, only downside is that
It comes with a strategy guide, I haven't used it yet though, what do you guys
think of it? hints? opinions? reviews? this be the place!

Yes, I've been playing it (you *knew* I was, didn't you). Overall, I
agree with you that it's a good game, though I don't personally put it
in the "awesome" class. It does have some novel features: it's set
in modern times, it has a good sense of humor (though some of it is
too juvenile for my taste).

As for the strategy guide, I've been ignoring it too. I'll probably
read it after I finish the game. But here's a hint I figured out
without reading it. Don't use the Casey Bat. It sucks. It LOOKS
like it has a high attack rating, but it almost never hits anything.
Just like Casey, always striking out. Pretty funny, huh?

Hmmm. I haven't gotten a chance to play it yet, but I've read some of
the reviews in Nintendo Power. Is it really that good? It looks
like a kiddy game to me, but I'll have to try it before I make a final
decision.

Looks too childish for my taste. I wanted to burn Paladin's Quest after
I tried it just for that reason, but it wasn't mine <;*{

it's definatly good but I've been having trouble finding 2 items, the gutsy bat
and the magic frying pan, anyone know where they are?

#5 of 31 by setzer on Thu Jul 6 00:19:49 1995:

I think you can buy the frying pan, but don't ask me where.

#6 of 31 by kain on Thu Jul 6 02:01:08 1995:

Oh okay jeff have you finished it yet?

#7 of 31 by jsr on Thu Jul 6 12:12:31 1995:

No, but I'm pretty close. I don't recall either item you mentioned.
I must've missed 'em, or maybe forgot about them. As to whether it's
a "kiddy game", I guess you could look at it that way. I try to
ignore this aspect of it and appreciate its good points. But I
suspect that not everyone will like Earthbound. It's not in the
class of Final Fantasy, that's for sure. Try it before you buy it,
if possible.

Maybe I'll rent it one of these days...

#9 of 31 by kain on Thu Jul 6 22:09:24 1995:

I played it with a friend and I am borrowing it, I remember as how to get the
gutsy bat, what it does is it raises you r gts by 124 and it's more powerful
thna anything but the casey bat! my friend tells me you can get it by fighting
bioni c krakens in magicant but he says there's only a one in 128 chance of
them having one.

#10 of 31 by jsr on Fri Jul 7 12:07:26 1995:

Interesting. That explains why I haven't seen one. I think your friend's
explanation may be slightly off, though. The legendary bat (found in
the endgame area) is stronger than the casey bat. So it must also be
stronger than the gutsy bat. Still, with that big a guts boost, maybe
the gutsy bat is better to have.

#11 of 31 by kain on Fri Jul 7 20:41:44 1995:

the only thing is... jeff? have you been to magicant yet? the last place you
can save is not in the area where the krakens are. neither is the last area you
can rest. and you can't rest or save again til after you've killed ness's
nightmare. and if you have been there you'll know that bionic krakens are not
easy so getting the gutsy bat is near impossible unless your extremly lucky!

#12 of 31 by jsr on Mon Jul 10 14:49:03 1995:

Yes, Magicant has come and gone for me. It's too late for me to return
there, so no gutsy bat for me.

In fact, I just finished the game up, so I looked up a few things in the
book. It says (contrary to what I said in #10) that the Casey bat is
strongest (but its error rate is so high, it's worthless), followed by
the legendary bat, then the gutsy bat. There is also a special weapon
for the prince of Dalaam, the sword of kings (or something like that).
Like the gutsy bat, it's real hard to get. There's a 1/128 chance that
one of the Starmen will have it (I forget which kind of Starman).

Now that I'm done, my feeling is that I'm a little disappointed. There
were some good things about the game, but I really don't have any desire
to replay it. I guess this means that to me, at least, the game's
negative points outweighed the positive. Of course, by their nature,
RPGs tend to have low replay value. But the really good ones do replay
well. Oh, well, I guess I'll go back to 7th Saga till Secret of Evermore
comes out...

I personally can't wait until chorono triger comes out when it does up goes teh
itetm!

#14 of 31 by jsr on Tue Jul 11 14:49:03 1995:

Yes, me too. Come to think of it, I think they changed the release dates,
and Chrono Trigger is now supposed to come out before Evermore. So much
the better.

Hmm. Maybe this belongs in the "drift" item...

#15 of 31 by kain on Tue Jul 11 15:11:04 1995:

maybe owell It's suppose to be really good.

#20 of 31 by kain on Wed Jul 12 11:25:16 1995:

#21 of 31 by starwolf on Sat Jul 15 22:03:58 1995:

<Starwolf casts a spell, turning setzer into an imp until he calms down.>

#30 of 31 by junkie on Mon Aug 14 19:44:49 1995:

Uh oh....well, ah...i guess i should say my little bit about earthbound

I thought it was a great game, of course i only rented it. i thought the humor
was extreamly funny, and the backgrounds in the fights were really cool...
but i can see when the replay value would die as soon as you beat it, there
aren't many games out for game systems that have non-lineur storylines
(at least that i know of) and it's definatly not in the final fantasy ranks
but it was a good try at a amusing game... ***1/2 out of 5
