Grex Oldrpg Item 21: Mages' academy
Entered by orinoco on Wed Mar 15 20:46:05 UTC 1995:

Mages are fun. No doubt about it. You can just do some gee golly gosh darn
neat stuf with 'em. I like mages. Yup.

But seriously, folks, there's a lot you can do with them that nobody realizes.
For instance, most people have heard about the ol' permanent light spell in
a bag trick, but why not take that one step farther--a permanent darkness
spell in a bag to blind you enemies. Or better yet, permanent light on a
clay pot, smash the pot, grind it into dust, and just use one grain when
you need some light. A permanent darkness spell used the same way makes
sume powder to throw into the face of enemies, and envelop them w/darkness.
Yep. Sure are neat. Just can't live without 'em. Mages are fun. Yep.

Yeah, but mages aren't all fun and games. Take Raistlin Majerie, for example.
He's probably strong enough to take on any army on Krynn, but it sure cost him
a lot for his powers. He gave up his strength to become a mage. Just the fact
that he's a mage makes him one of the coolest characters on Krynn.

AD&D Mages bite with big, sharp teeth when compared ti Mage: The Ascencion or
Ars Magica. MAGE mages can even make up effects on the spot, whereas AD&D
mages require a LOT of time money and books to do the same thing.

I'd just like to put in a good word for the flexibility of mages/magic
in the Hero system.

#4 of 110 by radagast on Wed Mar 22 10:16:18 1995:

Mages are, in my opinion, the greatest trap designers in the ad&d
universe. Try this, a rock to mud beneath an enemy, an UNANCHORED
wall of stone above them, (WHOMP, SPLATTT) followed by a reverse rock to
mud. Indeed, Mages are the number one trapsters of all time!

#5 of 110 by phreakus on Wed Mar 22 18:57:40 1995:

I still say MAGE mages would rapidly liquify an AD&D mage if no sleepers
were to witness it.

#6 of 110 by plork on Fri Mar 24 00:33:33 1995:

Probably.....

#7 of 110 by setzer on Fri Mar 24 21:04:12 1995:

I wouldn't know. What's the difference?

#8 of 110 by plork on Sun Mar 26 00:36:55 1995:

Niether do I, but I just try to sound like I do.

#9 of 110 by radagast on Mon Mar 27 11:44:54 1995:

I guess that depends on the ability of the player, doesn't it?
Well... No, I won't say anymore just now. :-)

#10 of 110 by phreakus on Mon Apr 3 17:44:31 1995:

In Mage, magick is not limited by what's in the book. There are 9 Spheres
(Forces, Life, Correspondence <playing with 3-dimentional space>, Mind,
Entropy<decay, death, ect.>
Matter, Spirit, Prime<deals with Quintessence, fundamental reality>,
and Time. Each is treated as a Skill rated from 1 to 5. Different effects
are possible with different combinations.

#11 of 110 by lordsoth on Mon Apr 10 03:36:21 1995:

Mages are the ultimate power in the universe...no matter what world they are
in...Take Raistlin Majere. In the Twins Trilogy of Dragonlance, he was the
most powerful man alive. Unfortunately, as we all know"evil consumes itslef"
but if he had not attempted to destroy the Gods he could have ruled the
physical world of Krynn and now my fellow gamers, I ask...Who could have
stopped the great Raistlin Maj:e

woops...welll that kinda ruined it, didn't it? Anyway I do not know of anyone
who could have.

#12 of 110 by phreakus on Tue Apr 11 17:49:07 1995:

Raistlin was a fool. He should not hake killed the gods, just enslaved them!

#13 of 110 by setzer on Tue Apr 11 22:04:13 1995:

Too risky. If he had just enslaved them, they might have been able to
recover.

#14 of 110 by jamie on Wed Apr 12 02:00:36 1995:

I think Elminster, Khelben Blackstaff, The Simbul, and Halaster would be albe
to kick any wizard (or group of)'s enchanted behinds!

#15 of 110 by phreakus on Thu Apr 13 16:15:37 1995:

Send them up against Tremere, Alexander Titilus, and the head of Every other
Mage chantry on earth. That would be a fight!

#16 of 110 by kain on Sat Apr 15 22:01:47 1995:

sothy! welcome!

#17 of 110 by jamie on Sun Apr 16 18:19:47 1995:

Well, I've never heard of them...I mainly stay on Aebir-Toeril...but it owuld
be a fight if they are anything like Eliminster and the rest.

#18 of 110 by setzer on Mon Apr 17 19:30:52 1995:

Yeah, Elminster ROCKS!!!

#19 of 110 by phreakus on Thu Apr 20 15:10:46 1995:

Tremere, Titilus, ect. Could throw their spells Much faster than Elminster,
and also have a more diverse Grimoire of effects to choose from.
Of course, out of all that lot, only Tremere would not have to concern
himself with Paradox.......

#20 of 110 by kain on Sun Apr 23 02:53:02 1995:

Okay.... whatever mark

#21 of 110 by jamie on Sun Apr 30 02:57:47 1995:

List New Ideas For Spells Here!

#34 of 110 by toking on Thu Jul 20 18:39:34 1995:

wiat..this isn't a spell but i've been dming for a while now and ever since
i first let one of the pcs come across a bag of holding i've had this
gnawing question.....what would happen if someone turned a bag of holding
inside out??? i figure this is a good question for the mages

#35 of 110 by starwolf on Sat Jul 22 19:51:27 1995:

Bag of holding inside out? ....Maybe it would carry *less* than ane bag could
hold ;}

#36 of 110 by kain on Sun Jul 23 02:56:53 1995:

that's an interesting question but wouldn't that be hard you'd have to reach
your arm in quite a way to grab the bottom.

#37 of 110 by setzer on Sun Jul 23 20:14:21 1995:

Even cooler! A bag of devouring inside out!

#38 of 110 by toking on Mon Jul 24 01:47:33 1995:

no..itd be easy....just push the bottom of the bag out through the top
and i like the idea of the bag of devouring.......hehehhe
and to add to my origional question....lets say the pcheld on to the bottom
of the bag and the lip of the bag...turned it inside out...then put it back
how it was supposed to be.....would the bag then ba holding its
capacity of the srea that it was in while turned inside out

#39 of 110 by setzer on Tue Jul 25 16:17:00 1995:

hmmm.
