For Horse People- or anyone Interested in Horses I am interested in discussing Equine issues with others who own, ride, or are just "mad about horses". I am a dressage rider but I am interested in all aspects of the horse world. Are there no other folks out on Grex who love horses?

Katie?
My daughter, age 12, lovers horses, but has non local contacts for riding. (She has gone to the "Y" summer horse camp, twice.) Can you suggest stables to contact?
My wife use to ride when she was in her teens. she was going to try for the Olympics (Pie-in-the-sky) but that dream came to an end when she fell off her horse, broke her arm and discovered there was more to life than ride, eat sleep, ride, school, ride, eat, sleep, etc. Her mother also use to ride dressage... Long time ago.
I love my horses. Jeeves is a 17 hand thoroughbred, 4th level dressage trained, who rode in the Olympics long ago. He has it very easy now. Bucky is the one I bought for my mom. He is just plain cute.
Re #2: Based on what is "local" for you, I would try calling feed stores, "western" or tack stores, or just looking looking under "stables" in the yellow pages. The horse world is a little like the net; one contact can lead to another and another... I would like to caution you that there are a lot of really good facilities out there but also too many bad ones and folks just starting out can really get took. At a minimum, look for well-kept facilities and horses. Ask around after you find a prospective barn to see what kind of reputation the place has. I guess I may sound overly cautios, but I am especially interested in getting the young ones started off right. Couple more things- an excellent guide to general "Horsey" stuff of both the English and Western styles is the _Whole Horse Catalog_ which I believe has just been updated. It also has some contacts on camps and programs. Lastly- especially important for kids- Wear an ASTM approved hat when riding!
