I just came back from a trip to the UP, part of which was spent along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. I was utterly amazed by the beauty of the shorline -- I was reminded of both the fiords along the Oslo to Bergen train, and a little of the Na Pali coast of Kauai. Has anyone hiked the 50 miles between Grand Marias and Munising?

no, but i used to camp on the shore of lake superior just slightly west of grand murais. (by the way, that black sand on the beaches (the kind that is near impossible to brush off) is magnetite. it is a low-grade iron ore. take a magnet with you next time.
Hmm...you must have stayed in a campsite near the log-slide. Us, we were camping elsewhere and drove through some of it looking at the sites along the way. Fabulous area.
We're going to the UP for camping next week... I can hardly wait to see all the lovely places you were speaking of, Josh!
Where are you going? I have a couple of favorite state forest campgrounds just north of Shingleton.
Anyone interested in a grexpedition to Painted Rock for hiking and/or camping this summer? It sounds great!
Painted Rock? You mean they let people camp on the corner of Hill and Washtenaw?
well, only frat paople, but we can fake it...just buy a keg and try to look as though it's not our first, find someone with an expensive haircut to pester women as they pass by--no one would know the difference...
You need a football to toss around, preferably into pedestrian traffic
("sorry, dude...of course it was your fault that you were on our sidewalk")
I have hiked about 42 miles of the 50 at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It is one of the first National Lakeshores in the country. If you have any questions about these areas Please ask:; PIctured Rocks national lakeshore Isle Royal Smoky Mountain National forset Boundary Waters canoe Area 62% of the state parks in Mi and 25% of the national forest areas in Mi Our group of modern day explorers seek intense situations to get in and out of. We are more than happy to help. Free info just ask.
I have been to Pictured Rocks but I have never hiked there. I was invited to go once in January but I lived in the UP so I said, "no way!" I would like to go this fall though as it is the most beautiful time. re #9 Yes tell us more repoman!
I have been through this area twice.. One of the times we hit the trail at 5:30 pm . We never made it to the designated campsites, so we had to stay right there:help
I'd like to paddle the coast there in my Kayak some time. I've heard it's a nice paddle.
If Lake Superior lets you! I've taken the boat trip, but I agree a paddle along the "rocks" to visit the "sea caves" would be very interesting.
Oh yeah that would be awesome!
