My usual spate of late May/early June solo piano performances is coming
up soon:
Old Time Piano Playing Contest, Peoria Illinois, May 23-25.
http://oldtimepiano.com
Click on the "2008 Contest" link for the list of contestants.
This event is devoted to the popular music of the early 20th
century, most particularly ragtime, and is probably the only
contest of its kind in the world that is open to all comers.
This is a rare opportunity to see me in period costume, in-
cluding straw hat and sleeve garters.
Ragtime Rally, St. Louis Missouri, May 26.
http://www.mostateparks.com/scottjoplin.htm
This event is held every Memorial Day at the Scott Joplin House
in St. Louis. Joplin's former residence (circa 1902) has been
converted is now a museum devoted to Joplin's life and music.
It's worth a visit if you're ever in the St. Louis area. The
annual Ragtime Rally features performers in an outdoor tent as
well as in the indoor "ragtime saloon".
Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival, Sedalia, Missouri,
June 4-8.
http://scottjoplin.org/festival.htm
With over 50 scheduled performers and numerous simultaneous
venues, the Scott Joplin Festival takes over the city of Sedalia
for five days and is by far the largest of the ragtime festivals.
I'll be playing sets at various outdoor locations around town
(free) and in the Legacy of Scott Joplin concert on Friday
afternoon (admission charge).
See http://scottjoplin.org/performers.htm for the list of
performers.
I'll not be on stage but rather playing in the aisle, at Hill, this Saturday evening, when a large number of flutists salute James Galway with a modern composition on the theme of Danny Boy.
sorry i misdedd it ....
Our seats, at Hill, for the concert were at the very most back of the second balcony. Oh. My. God. Is that up there. The piano looked like something Barbie might play. But the sound was better than the back of the main floor. It was fun all around.
The piano looked like something Barbie might play. I was thinking you mean it had mirror finish or something until I realized you were talking about size perspective.
Are you sure you weren't really thinking about Liberace?
Played Blind Boone's "Camp Meeting #1" and Julia Lee Niebergal's "Hoosier Rag" in the opening round of the Old TIme Piano Playing Contest. Made it to the semifinal round (top ten, tomorrow). Semifinal round is tomorrow. If I make it to the top five, I get MONEY.
I'm rootin fer ya!
I sure hope you get the money, remmers!
Show us the money, John!! ;-)
buy his ReallyGreate (tm) cd and you can show him teh money .... which he deserves more of, imnsho.
Well, I was not fated to make it to the top five, but I certainly don't begrudge it to any of those who did - they're all outstanding piano players and a fun bunch of folks. The winner of the contest is 16-year- old Adam Swanson, formerly of Michigan, now living in Iowa. (He's the first under-18 person to have won in the "adult" division in the history of the contest. (Under the rules, he has to compete as an adult because he won the junior division three times.)) Today, for me, it's on to St. Louis and a gig at the Scott Joplin House.
Sounds fun, remmers. it is too bad about the money but I imagine that the fun your having is more valuable anyways.
remmz.... what is the url for your cd-sales site? for just one of severeal who have lilsened ... it's excellent - stonetruth.

hey. folks .. buy this cd! *i* said so, ok? [[you have no other idea]]
The Illinois/Missouri ragtime festival tour was great fun. Four
festivals - Old Time Piano Contest (Peoria, IL), Ragtime Rally (St.
Louis, MO), Blind Boone Festival (Columbia, MO), Scott Joplin Festival
(Sedalia, MO). Much splendid music, enthusiastic audiences, and
opportunities to hang out with not-often-seen friends.
A number of the performances from these events have been posted on
YouTube, thanks to attendance by some video fiends who also happen to be
ragtime fans. If you're curious, check out recent postings here:

I listened to it on m-net
I have a bunch of gigs coming up. Too lazy to post them all, but they are listed in detail at www.katiegeddes.com. This Thurs is in Fenton. Next week Linden, then a few times in Chelsea...etc
Another video from the Scott Joplin Festival, this one in an outdoor tent called the "John Stark Pavilion", after Scott Joplin's publisher. My interpretation of Blind Boone's "Camp Meeting #1". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTzkCE8W6dQ (Unfortunately, the final chord of the piece was truncated...)
Prodigious video-make Tom Warner has posted a few more samples of my
playing at the Blind Boone Festival in Columbia, MO:
"Snookums" (Charles Johnson, 1918)

"The Sycamore" (Scott Joplin, arr. William Tyers, 1910)

Actually, you should check out Tom's video feed at

He's posted a huge collection of videos of the many, many fine musicians
who participated in the Blind Boone and Scott Joplin festivals. Lots of
extraordinary stuff.

Re #7: while you are up there at Hill, Mary, would you check on my "chair"? I made a contribution to the restoration work done in Hill and got a "chair" somewhere jup there, but haven't seen it.
Will do.
