When you have an adress, like intense.netaxs.com 4000 what does the 4000 mean?

Technically...
  4000 is the port number.  A server running Unix (or Linux) has an IP 
address, which is its address on the internet.  The machine also has 
port numbers.  (0 - 65535 or so).  This is another level of address.  If 
you are running a mud at the address a.mud.here on port 4000, then the 
MUD server program watches port 4000 for incoming data.  Your MUD 
client, lets say zmud, sends data to a.mud.here and specifies that it is 
to go to port 4000.  This way, you can have multiple muds or any other 
internet program running on one server and they all keep their data 
seperate.
