Grex Mud Item 12: A mud for Grex
Entered by unknown on Sat Nov 2 17:32:33 UTC 1996:

I have an idea for Grex ...why don't we start a mud for grexers to play while
there on Grex?

Hmm, as long as we kept it system central - it *might* work. Of course, first
we'd have to come up with a system for the mud to be based off of, if
neccessary pay the liscencing fees to use brand/company names, and finally
decide on a language to write it in, not to mention how combat works (do you
know how much health you lose, or do you need to look at the wound(s)?)

I really don't think Grex could handle the load -- even if it was just for
Grexers. Think of all that beautiful lag we'd receive...

Bjorn *really* hates lag when MUDing

It might be adventageous to link item 28 from COOP to this conference.

I forget if M-Net or Grex made the statement, but I think it was here that
adminstration asked that a MUD not be brought here because Grex can't handle
the bandwidth.

Bjorn, most coders don't write MUDs from scratch. They usually go to a source
code like DIKU first, and then make modifications from there. it is possible
to make too many modifications, however, for I was on one MUD that was so
heavily modified that it was mucked up..

This machine definatly couldn't handle what a mud needs.. I wouldn't
worry about bandwidth so much as CPU and memory consumption. Grex is
slow as it is, adding a mud would be disasterous. But the large number
of users could be an advantage too. A 386 could run a mud well as long
as that was all it did and had a good net connection. What about
starting up a donation pool for that?

Our MUD (dreamer.telmaron.com 3333) pulls in a fair number of Grex people.
If enough show up, I can be persuaded to add a bar, lounge, etc. just for
us...

I believe if we had some Multi-user-dungens we could get more members
in. I have be on grex for a few years as different logins. When I am not
mailing or chating I am play nethack. I know many people who in joy
games like nethack yet if we added a MUD game we could probley get more
members and some new donations.

I used to play on a variety of MUDs, including Diku-type,
MUSH, MOO, etc. It would be fun to start one on Grex if the
CPU and bandwidth limitations mentioned earlier in this thread
are no longer a concern. (It's doubtful such a project would
attract a huge number of users in these latter days.)

A MUSH or MOO might be ideal for promoting a community-wide
creative project.
