Grex Mud Item 10: Cool MUDs?
Entered by coyote on Tue Oct 24 21:12:57 UTC 1995:

Hey, everyone! I've played one MUD before (Gemstone III) and I love it. I
stopped looking for other MUDs after being spellbound (pun intended) by
Gemstone. If anybody knows some really good MUDs out there, I'd like it if
you'd tell me what they are and how to get there. ::Coyote jumps around with
a huge grin on his face:: Thanks!

I used to have a number from which I could telnet, but now they've restricted
my access. Does anybody out there have a dial-up number that you can telnet
from?

What ,exactly, does the Diku mean in DikuMud? I've played Death's Domain
for 6 months, a Diku, and I can't see the distinction. Any Hints?

Hello everyone, Well I am currently playing several muds, all different types
on taste. Vargonmud is a good one telnet to dogsun.dog.jhu.edu 4444 Vargonmud
is good because you can make your own emotes, it is a good social mud, and
fun to play..no pk as of yet, until they finish there original site
map.eps.jhu.edu 4444 this is the best mud for emotes..;) any questions just
mail me..:)

I'm not REAL sure, but diku is what the original coders named it. There
are a lot of versions of mud code out there now.. diku, envy, circle, lp,
tiny, etc etc. The biggest difference I see is how they handle internal
files. As a player, you won't see much difference unless you're playing
one that hasn't been modified by the admin *at all*.

realms.dorsai.org 1501 is the best MUD I've ever played. You must go there.
I'm Coyote on it.

#17 of 54 by bjorn on Sun Sep 15 18:24:44 1996:

You must have suicided your previous character - you gave me a different name.

#18 of 54 by coyote on Tue Sep 17 13:30:26 1996:

Yes, in essence, but I didn't think to put my new name on here unless somebody
here actually got on... At one point I saw that a Bjorn suicided. Was it
you?

#19 of 54 by bjorn on Tue Sep 17 14:43:40 1996:

Was the character's name Bjorn, or the user's name Bjorn?
I will admit that I did MUD there a while, but didn't log on too often and
usually left before anybody noticed.

#20 of 54 by coyote on Tue Sep 17 17:46:53 1996:

The character's name

#21 of 54 by bjorn on Tue Sep 17 19:58:13 1996:

Then it wasn't me.

#22 of 54 by unknown on Tue Sep 17 21:09:03 1996:

#30 of 54 by larsn on Fri Oct 31 20:57:59 1997:

Middle Earth (JRR Tolkien) Role Playing?

#31 of 54 by orinoco on Sat Nov 1 20:48:06 1997:

There is a game called MERPS - Middle Earth Role Playing System. A friend
of mine has played, and says that it's a fairly complicated simplification
of another, insanely complicated system.
Bother eldrich, he should know more than I do.

#32 of 54 by larsn on Mon Nov 3 15:37:47 1997:

If it indeed stand for Middle Earth Role Playing, then it's a simplification
of the Role Master system by ICE. I have both, but haven't looked at them in
years. Fumble and critial rolls can make for entertaining combat resolutions
('hit causes head to become bloody pulp. Enemy dies.', or 'You fumble your
sword and cut your self. Enemy stunned three rounds due to laughing.')

#33 of 54 by orinoco on Tue Nov 4 22:18:59 1997:

Doesn't sound like much of a fumble to me, but it's amusing nonetheless.

#34 of 54 by larsn on Wed Nov 5 14:56:10 1997:

If you re-read what I wrote you'll see I haven't looked at the books in years
so my quotes are drawn from my *very* sketchy memory. It may or may not be
the exact words, I just wanted to convey the idea that damage isn't just based
on 3d6..

#35 of 54 by orinoco on Thu Nov 6 00:26:15 1997:

..which is a nice touch, although it can be more trouble than it's worth at
times.

#36 of 54 by larsn on Thu Nov 6 14:47:54 1997:

Of course it can take some extra time.. But depending on how much you feel
like following the rule-books to the letter you can always wing it now and
then (as long as everyone playing are ok with it of course). If you're facing
a tough opponent it can be nice though that, given *just teeny* bit of luck
you can get a good hit and save the day. ;)

#37 of 54 by orinoco on Thu Nov 6 22:17:13 1997:

(Always though the 'miraculous victory' deal with critical hits to be not very
rewarding myself, but not dying is also nice)

#38 of 54 by seppuku on Sun Jan 11 07:36:07 1998:

well, as a retired veteran of *many* muds, I have to say that there are 2 that
stand out in my memory. LooneyMUD and Realms of Despair. here's my blurb on
both:

LooneyMUD: just as the name implies. you really do miss out on much if you
don't have ANSI color or are colorblind... it's more a talker than a killing
mud, but it satirizes many things.. from my memory, I've seen Gilligan's
Island, the Simpsons, Fantasia, the Power Rangers, Barney, Beavis & Butthead,
and all other sorts of crackheadedness. very worthwhile to check out. address
is looney.com 8888

Realms of Despair (RoD): The Best Mud I have *ever* seen. I've played this
one for over 3 years, and have seen it grow from having under 50 to over 500
players at any given time. they are the originators of the SMAUG mud code,
which is worthwhile IAOI. they have a plentitude of original areas, 50 player
levels an 15 immortal levels, and great newbie support

address is realms.game.org 4000

just my sage words of addiction,
KK
