Grex Mnet Item 55: What's up with m-net?
Entered by kaylene on Sat Sep 9 01:32:00 UTC 2000:

    Connect failed
and I can't access any of the web pages at www.arbornet.org

Any clue when telnet and web service are going to be back?

Dunno, but in Agora somebody mentioned that M-net had gone down.

#2 of 30 by jmsaul on Sat Sep 9 04:23:39 2000:

No idea what's going on at present. I was out of town until this evening.

#3 of 30 by cyklone on Sat Sep 9 12:44:10 2000:

Someone please get hold of Rex and Tony ASAP.

#4 of 30 by jmsaul on Sat Sep 9 15:23:32 2000:

Working on it.

#5 of 30 by jmsaul on Sat Sep 9 15:41:06 2000:

I've spoken to both Rex and Jamie. We aren't sure why we're down. All we
know at this point is that it isn't a connectivity issue, since some services
are still active. Mail is getting bounced with a "User unknown" message, for
example.

More details as we have them.

#6 of 30 by jmsaul on Sat Sep 9 16:19:09 2000:

We've unplugged the M-Box from the network, and Rex is going over to WWNet
later today or early tomorrow to work on it.

#7 of 30 by don on Sat Sep 9 17:13:50 2000:

Mail was getting bounced? I take it that means that nothing was spooled until
the m-box was unplugged?

#8 of 30 by ric on Sun Sep 10 03:51:30 2000:

"User unknown"? I hope this isn't related to newuser.

#9 of 30 by willard on Sun Sep 10 04:47:32 2000:

If it is, it can be repaired fairly easily. It wouldn't explain why
the box stopped responding to telnet and ssh, but left some services
running, though.

#10 of 30 by kaylene on Sun Sep 10 06:21:29 2000:

It might be intentional, but I can't get arbornet.org
resolved to an ip address, (I know it's unpluged, but still....)

nslookup arbornet.org

Server: vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net
Address: 4.2.2.1

DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.

#11 of 30 by mdw on Sun Sep 10 09:28:47 2000:

Arbornet.org only has 2 NS servers. One is (apparently) arbornet
itself. The other is dns.wwnet.net, which appears to be sick (*long*
delay, then returns "SERVFAIL".) Since the "whois" everything contact is
at an arbornet address, there doesn't appear to be any way to send
e-mail to the person responsible for DNS for that domain. Also, the
phone number listed for that person is wrong.

#12 of 30 by trex on Sun Sep 10 17:41:14 2000:

hopefully it's just that newuser or something corrupted the password file,
and some services failed for lack of a root account.
that might be a tad tricky to fix, though.

re: 10 -- I'm getting the same thing...but I also have the same problem with
grex.cyberspace.org and an intermittent problem with grex.org. I had to use
the IP address to get here.

For a while I thought Ameritech had a broken DNS server.

#14 of 30 by tpryan on Sun Sep 10 21:53:22 2000:

Looks like arbornet is back up.

#15 of 30 by jmsaul on Mon Sep 11 01:39:20 2000:

It is, but I can't post. I get an error message saying that
/p/seldon/.cfdir/cf.buffer does not exist.

#16 of 30 by jmsaul on Mon Sep 11 02:59:05 2000:

There is some sort of configuration problem. If you're one of the apparently
few people it affects, try removing any lines specifying an editor or pager
from your .cfonce. It worked for me.

1543z, member.arbornet.org can't be resolved.

#20 of 30 by jmsaul on Thu Oct 19 17:16:36 2000:

I think we're having DNS problems. The same thing happened briefly last
night, and then we were reachable again. Keep checking, and I'll post when
I have more information (if Rex doesn't beat me to it).

#21 of 30 by cyklone on Thu Nov 16 13:55:21 2000:

Here's the latest problem I encountered trying to log in:

Login: mnet
Password:
Connecting to 209.142.209.164 ...
Escape character is '^]'
Connected

FreeBSD (m-net.arbornet.org) (ttyp7)

telnetd: /dev/ttyp7: Too many open files in system.

Connection closed.

NO CARRIER

WTF?

#22 of 30 by buzzard on Thu Nov 16 14:41:08 2000:

Me too. Something's fucked up.

#23 of 30 by jor on Thu Nov 16 14:55:08 2000:

telnetd: /dev/ttyp6: Too many open files in system.

        yep.

#24 of 30 by mdw on Fri Nov 17 10:04:44 2000:

Sounds like they need a smaller per-process file limit, and a larger
system file limit.

#25 of 30 by jor on Sat Dec 16 23:35:40 2000:

cannot telnet to "it" all day . . is it just me?

#26 of 30 by jerryr on Tue Dec 19 01:57:38 2000:
