Grex Mnet Item 32: M-net Down
Entered by cyklone on Thu Jun 1 23:20:35 UTC 2000:

M-net appears to be down. I can't get in with the dialins, telnet or Web-YAPP.
Is this related to the changeover at WWnet that was mentioned a couple of
weeks ago?

A traceroute just now eventually made it to m-net. However, like you, I
never got a login prompt in any of several ways of connecting.

#20 of 232 by jmsaul on Fri Jun 2 23:13:16 2000:

Willard never should have given his bird the root password. Damn it; you
just can't trust psittacines.

#25 of 232 by willard on Sat Jun 3 00:24:06 2000:

I actually don't know the current root password. I haven't talked to Rex
since it was changed a few days ago. Maybe Rex gave it to my bird.

Who is xdr?

#29 of 232 by jmsaul on Sat Jun 3 04:40:41 2000:

I'm sorry, Citizen, but you aren't cleared to know. Please move along.

#30 of 232 by void on Sat Jun 3 05:07:44 2000:

   i am not a number! i am a free m-netter!

#31 of 232 by mjb on Sat Jun 3 05:50:21 2000:

xdr is an obnoxious hacker that has given us headaches in the past.
The current problem may have been caused by him, or the system may just need
work. Till someone makes it to the office, we can't say for sure.

#32 of 232 by kewy on Sat Jun 3 06:02:08 2000:

Booty.
One thing I just noticed - I was able to get to the arbornet.org
website all afternoon, just not to web-yapp. Now I cant even get
there. Weird.

Im missing my dose of geekdom and grex just doesnt cut it for me... its
a little bit too...

#33 of 232 by mdw on Sat Jun 3 06:37:09 2000:

You're looking for geeks, eh?

#34 of 232 by willard on Sat Jun 3 14:34:17 2000:

Our secondary DNS at WWNet appears to have stopped responding. This means
that people sending E-Mail to M-Net will get bounce messages, and even if
the system itself is recovered, no one will be able to log into it until
DNS is restored (because arbornet.org hasn't been updated with InterNIC
yet).

Root had been compromised on M-Net. I'd observed root activity on ttyp1
with no wtmp or utmp record as recently as Wednesday at 7:30 pm. It is a
very distinct possibility that someone ("xdr") did something destructive.
I hope he's proud of himself, if that's what happened here.

This may be something completely different, though. It just seems kinda
strange, y'know? We'll sort out the details after everything is back
online.

#36 of 232 by iggy on Sat Jun 3 15:21:13 2000:

if it is so, the dude soulnd like he has some serious maturity
problems.
i could speculate that a SO who tried to end a relationship with
him would suffer the same fate. a real 'stalker' type.

of course, i am only assuming that the person who did this to mnet
is young and male...

#37 of 232 by twinkie on Sat Jun 3 15:39:50 2000:

When's the last time M-Net was backed up?

#38 of 232 by styles on Sat Jun 3 15:42:37 2000:

Jamie, you get anything else on him besides his ISP, i.e. physical
description, names of friends/family/loved ones, address...you know, the
usual? ;)

<dood, this is greckz? c-c-crazee, mon>
