Grex Mnet Item 113: Coverage
Entered by edina on Mon Jul 28 05:05:36 UTC 2008:

Dave and I were watching the VH-1 Rock Honors tonight that I had on
the DVR. The Who was being honored, with lots of bands coming out to
cover their songs, my favorites being Pearl Jam's "Love Reign Over Me"
(Vedder's voice is so perfect for that choice) , Tenacious D.
covering "Squeezebox" (a true sense of great music and great whimsy)
and "Pinball Wizard" by the Flaming Lips (my all-time fave, as I love
that song and have a large crush on Wayne Coyne).

But something Dave and I do frequently is discuss who did great covers
of various songs. You know - Manfred Mann doing "Blinded By The
Light", the Springsteen song, taking a passable song and making it
*phenomenal*. So what are you favorite covers and what do you like
about it?

(I'm not sure many people read the M-Nut conferene.... But I kind of like
Siouxie's cover of, "The Passenger.")

I liked Jimi Hendrix's cover of Clapton's "All Along the Watchtower"

I liked Vanilla Fudge's cover of "Set Me Free"

I liked Elton John's cover of "Lucy in The Sky with Diamonds"

I thought Bob Dylan did "All Along the Watchtower." I had no idea Clapton
did as well?

I think you have to ask the FW in Agora to link it for you...

Oleta Adams covering "Don't Let The Sun Go Down" on me. Taking a good
song and making it absolutely amazing.

The Dead do a pretty good version of All Along the Watchtower.

I've always really liked Aztec Camera's cover of Van Halen's Jump.

I like Blind Melon's version of Three is a Magic Number

" thought Bob Dylan did "All Along the Watchtower."

My bad,how right you are.

I also like Queensryche's cover of "Scarborough Fair"

King Crimson's cover of "Three of a perfect pair" is pretty good.

I love Blind Melon's version of "Three is a Magic Number"! It think
it's the only reason I keep that cd.

And I now have to find the Queensryche cover of "Scarborough Fair".
Thanks Lar!

#12 of 27 by twinkie on Wed Aug 6 20:34:58 2008:

Depeche Mode did the original, and Scala covered it.

I don't have anything to contribute, but for some reason, erased responses
keep showing up as new, and I'm sick of seeing #19.

#21 of 27 by cross on Wed Sep 17 20:36:27 2008:

Yeah, that seems to be a bug in fronttalk.

#22 of 27 by twinkie on Wed Sep 17 20:56:13 2008:

What?

HOW CAN THAT BE?

Fronttalk is open source!

#23 of 27 by cross on Wed Sep 17 21:25:20 2008:

Being open source, we have the ability to find and fix the bug. Open source
is not a panacea; but you knew that.

Contrast this, however, to the situation with the current "scribble" bug in
picospan, which we cannot fix, since we don't have the source code to it.

(Psst: `fixseen' would have had the same effect as a response.)

#24 of 27 by twinkie on Wed Sep 17 21:44:02 2008:

Great.

So, tell me again why you haven't fixed the bug.

#25 of 27 by furs on Wed Sep 17 21:44:45 2008:

I cant read any items in agora anymore. I can't post to anything there
either when I use putty or on the web.

#26 of 27 by cross on Wed Sep 17 22:06:36 2008:

resp:24 Well, because I crashed my laptop and had to fix it in the
meantime, and I'd forgotten about it before that. I'll look into it.

resp:25 Weird; do you get an error message at all?

The DeCadence rendition of the Ben Folds Five version
of Bitches Ain't Shit. (The video is quite entertaining.)
