M-net went down roughly a couple of hours after Grex was taken
offline by vandal action, Wednesday afternoon.

Can't help but wonder if it's the same idiot.

#3 of 26 by naftee on Sat Nov 25 05:27:16 2006:

hmm. i thought it was another power outage :(

#4 of 26 by lar on Sat Nov 25 18:00:52 2006:

yeah yeah vandal action. HAH
I want to see some proof.
sounds like hackgoaphobia.
Grex went down because the software is buggy and full of hole.
M-net is down because they need a new box.

NO WAIT! IT'S ALL CDALTEN'S FAULT!
sheesh.

#5 of 26 by ric on Sat Nov 25 19:18:30 2006:

m-net is down because there's only one person with access to go type in the
root password when it's needed because the hosting provider can't be asked
to do it (since they are, after all, providing hosting for free). I suppose
it's possible that something is actually wrong, but who knows. All a hacker
would have to do would be to halt the system, and it'd take 2 weeks before
we'd get it back up again because of the "lack of institutional redundancy"

#6 of 26 by naftee on Sun Nov 26 07:27:51 2006:

you should move to ann arbour, ric

#7 of 26 by ric on Sun Nov 26 15:17:07 2006:

If I were still in Ann Arbor, I would happily volunteer to do whatever it
takes to keep m-net online.

I'm not blaming Rex here for anything - people have priorities, and there's
nothing wrong with that. It's just that only one person has access.

#8 of 26 by krokus on Sun Nov 26 16:16:51 2006:

I thought that Tony had root access as well? (Not that he has much
time available either, for that matter.)

Granted that Rex is El Jefe for the system, but I thought we had
more than one person with root access. This is something we'll have
to addrress, I suppose, once the system is restored.

#9 of 26 by naftee on Sun Nov 26 19:50:29 2006:

there are lots of people with root access; there just aren't enough with
physical access

#10 of 26 by nharmon on Mon Nov 27 01:36:53 2006:

M-net is talking about closing its doors for good?

#11 of 26 by naftee on Mon Nov 27 03:04:13 2006:

no, nate.

go back to bed

#12 of 26 by nharmon on Mon Nov 27 03:54:50 2006:

Bitch, fuck you. :-)

#13 of 26 by ric on Mon Nov 27 13:07:10 2006:

re 8 - Tony got run off. He's no longer interested in participating with the
operation of m-net. And although he had root access, I'm pretty sure that
REX is the only person with physical access to the box.

#14 of 26 by tod on Mon Nov 27 19:49:05 2006:

There's nothing wrong with M-Net. Its a network problem upstream and Rex is
working on it. I'm out of town on vacation so can't be useful at this time.

#15 of 26 by ric on Mon Nov 27 22:12:19 2006:

Let me give you the real story. It's not a network problem upstream, it's
apparently that our hosting provider has disconnected m-net from the internet
because of too many reports of phishing sites (ie, people trying to steal bank
account info, ebay passwords, paypal passwords, etc).

Rex *IS* working on getting them to turn it back on. I suggested that we at
least temporarily disable home directory web site publishing until a solution
can be found.

#16 of 26 by cyklone on Mon Nov 27 23:52:10 2006:

See if he can talk them into the Grex Solution (turning off newuser).

#17 of 26 by naftee on Tue Nov 28 00:36:23 2006:

tod !

aren't you in ann arbour on your out of town mission ?!

#18 of 26 by twinkie on Tue Nov 28 05:28:28 2006:

It's so difficult these days to tell if tod is simply delusional, or if he's
just a compulsive liar.

#19 of 26 by tsty on Tue Nov 28 07:00:52 2006:

re 15 ...ummmm,,,,, "network problem upstream" and "hosting provider has
disconnected m-net from the internet" look identical, merely the
source of the 'unreachable' situation is different.

#20 of 26 by ric on Tue Nov 28 13:26:13 2006:

re 18 - heheh

He didn't lie. I suppose having your network cable unplugged is "sort of"
a network problem upstream... just not in the way that such terminology is
typically used.

#21 of 26 by lowclass on Tue Nov 28 19:58:48 2006:

 M-Net IS back up.

(and the sound of rejoicing was heard throughout the land)

#22 of 26 by tod on Wed Nov 29 18:54:40 2006:

re #17
We were in Michigan but 2 hours from a2. Half my family was sick so making
a trip to a2 just wasn't in the cards. The message I'd got from Rex was about
OTC blocking arbornet.org
I don't claim to be a staff person nor was I in a position to be
troubleshooting M-Net the past 2 weeks.

re #18
Definitely a compulsive liar

#23 of 26 by krokus on Thu Nov 30 03:27:09 2006:

I got a response when I tried to connect to m-box a few mins ago,
but it doesn't have the same ssh key. This the correct machine?

#24 of 26 by cyklone on Thu Jan 11 01:13:13 2007:

mnet seems to be down again. Can't telnet or visit via the web.

#25 of 26 by furs on Thu Jan 11 01:59:13 2007:

actually, it was only down for like 5 mins. THat's happened a couple
times in the last few days.

#26 of 26 by cyklone on Thu Jan 11 04:01:57 2007:

Hmmmm. It's up now.
