Mac System 7.1 has had several updates - the most recent being 3.0.

I have run Sys 7.1 Update 3.0 on my Mac Powerbook. I can't say it has changed the look or behavior of the system much, except for replacing TeachText with SimpleText (a *great* improvement), and *an undocumented screen saver*. The screen just dims after a few minutes of idle. That's OK...but can it be controlled? I could find no Control Panel that controlled this (and nothing about it in the accompanying documentation).
I have read some good things about SU3.0, but haven't gone to the trouble yet. I don't know anything about the controls for the screen dimmer, tho. I'll let you know if I spot something.
Sys 7.5 is on the way...
Yes and it will incorporate SU3.0 .
For a few dollars more?
Sys 7.5 will probably cost more than I want to pay. I don't expect to upgrade early, or perhaps at all. SU3.0 will be rolled into it as part of the package, though.
7.5 seems much "faster" than 7.1 -- primarily because they re-wrote the disk caching routines. I like 7.5 and will be installing it on all the dept. machines as soon as I get my hands on a CD of it.
Perhaps I'll reconsider.
Our department has installed it on all lab machines. Now you get a progress bar, as it boots. wow
Hey, don't be sarcastic, or you won't get any help! ;-)
Whoops! I forgot that my Sysop is watching 8-/.
Odd. I found 7.5 to be slower than 7.1. As an interesting side note, just for the fun of it I dropped WindowShades from 7.5 into the the System Folder of this SE running system 6.0.8 and rebooted. It works! I get a warning message saying that WindowShades may cause problems with any OS other than 7.5 but no problems yet. Makes me wonder else I can drag into 6.0.8 to modernize it?
What is this WindowShades? I haven't seen a Mac up close in years.
(Click on any title bar of any open window a few times and the window disappears leaving only the title bar behind. Click on it a few times again and the window reopens. Nice when you have multiple windows open and you want to go between them.)
It is built into later OSs, with a button in the upper right corner for opening and closing windows while leaving the title bar in place.
Cool feature. I use(d) a little 'finder' in my Winblos 3.1. Neat also.
I also have used the file finder that came with 7.5 in 7.1 without problems. I like the OS 7.5 file finder better. I've not tried it with 6.0.8 and doubt that I will.
