The ST-157N 0 drive on one of my Mac's got hit by lightning this last weekend. Fortunatly it was backed up. I would like to replace it with a Quantum or some other high reliability SCSI HD with a capacity of 40 to 80 Mb. I would rather get hold of an old ST-157N-0 HD with mechanical problems so I can scrounge the controller and resirect mine. Any thoughts on this or ideas on where to go for the best price on a new hard drive?

Ask lk, for a quote, I think they do sell HDs, also Dominant Systems (I think mju would be the contact person). If no luck, ask me, I can't give you any warranty nor service.
Just ran across a friend who has some connections that should land me a Maxtor for a real gooood price. I don't really need any service, except for drive technical info. Warranty would be nice tho...
I think there is always some manufs warranty, but I don't know how it is handled. Usually you take it to the store and the store sends it to the distributor with a tech report, and the distributor sends it to the manuf. I simply cannot afford to offer the procedure because of no margin involved. If you could send it directly to the manufacturer, that might work for you.
Depending on your apartment or home owner's policy, your equipment may be insured along with your normal personal property. Check with your agent.
Guess I should explain "lightning". In this case I managed to discharge the CRT 2nd anode connection through the SCSI connector while I doing a memory upgrade on my highly modified Mac 512.
I am sure you had it turned off. Those capacitors hold the charge for a long time.
Oh yes, it was turned off. The CRT makes a nice capatitor indeed! (I did make an effort to discharge it but, evidently, missed.)
Does anyone know what a SCSI sense code 1 means?
I used to.
Please remember :)
If you are talking about the sense key, I quote from a SCSI-2 draft
specification (my guess is that it's the same for scsi-1):
01h - RECOVERED ERROR. Indicates that the last command completed
successfully with some recovery action performed by the target.
Details may be determinable by examining the additional sense
keys and the information bytes.
Well, I ordered a Quantum LPS 52 last Tuesday for $219 including mounting kit, cables, formating software and System 7 already installed. I didn't think I would ever want to run System 7 on a Plus, but what the heck? I might as well give it a try... Does anyone have a BBS No. for Quanyum? I'd like to have it if there is one.
Thanks Dan !
This seemed like a somnanbulent enough item in which to ask a vaguely related question. I picked up a RS232C surge suppressor cheap, so thought I'd put it in my MacSE-Zenith151 data link. It clamps the voltage on pins 2,3,4,5 or 7 to less than +/- 38 volts w.r.t. pin 1 (the notes say +/- 26 volts, but I measured it at 5 ma). My LAN (;^)) carries pins 1,2,3,4,7 and 20 through, but pin 1 is only connected to the chassis at the Zenith151 end, and "floats" at the SE end. The link is 60 feet long and the Zenith151 is on the second floor, and the SE on the first. The question is, should I install the surge suppressor at the Zenith151 end, or at the SE end? Oh yes, the Zenith151 end can be switched as a printer link to a DeskJet500. (End of momentous, worldshaking, critical question...)
