Grex Micros Item 210: The Micros Short Question item
Entered by omni on Sat Jul 24 06:55:03 UTC 1999:

we have no short question item, so I might as well start one.

First up.. I have a 20M SCSI HD (apple) and I am thinking about putting it
in one of my Plusses. How hard is this, and what do I need to get it done?
Will the Plus support an internal HD?

The Plus has no internal SCSI connector and the power supply can not
handle the needed power, nor is there a connector. Internal heat would
also be a problem. Get yourself a $10 SE. That will take an internal
HD.

I have a SE. I'm planning on building a external HD using that drive.

Why would you want to put it inside a Plus if it already was inside a SE?

no, no, no. I wanted to put another drive inside the plus. But since it
cannot be done, the point is moot.

Anyone know a good source for SE's? I've got one that I use a terminal
on a linux box. It's actually pretty handy and I wouldn't mind another.

Kiwanis has them for around $20-30. Might even get one with a HD.

The best SE they have is $35, has a HD and 1.44 floppy drive. They
go down from there depending on size of HD and type of floppy drive.

Thanks, that's great! I was just talking w/ Sindi Keesan about donating
some parts anyway so I can kill two birds with one stone. =) Any HD
size is fine and even an 800K floppy. As I said I'd essentially be
using it as a dumb terminal anyway.

I used to use my 512K as a terminal (running it off 400K floppy.) I
generally used Red Ryder as my terminal program...talk about your classic
apps. That program is mentioned in _The Cuckoo's Egg_. It's a bit sluggish
on a 512K if you have a modem faster than 1200 baud, though.

I run kermit on an SE connected directly to my linux box via nullmodem
cable right now. It works pretty well.

Re 8: if you don't mind an 800K floppy and a smaller HD you might get
one for $25 or less. I can't recall right off hand how the lowest of
the SEs were priced. Note that these are NOT SE 30s, but plain SEs.

In the absence of Pagemaker 6.5, is there a way to extract text from
a PM 65 file (Windows format) on a Mac or Linux machine? I have looked
a bit on the web for this but found only AppleScripts using PageMaker
itself and utilities that only did 5.0-format files.
