I just obtained at a yard sale, a very nice looking and operational Mac Classic. Its got system 6, 2+Meg memory and a 40 Meg HD. Came with MS Word 5.0 . My question is..does anyone have a modem for same laying around that won't be expensive? What is the upper baud rate modem that this Classic can use? What do I need to try to find? Also where is the best place to look for shareware/software? :-)

I've used 14.4K baud modems with my Plus and 33.6K baud intermal in a PB-160. I suspect that your Clasic will work with them too. Just be carefull of the cable you use between your CPU and the modem! The serial port on your Clasic has hardware handshaking but many of the cables you can buy don't support it!? Be sure you get a cable that does full hardware handshaking. If your CPU has less than 6M of RAM, don't expect to surf the web. (My SE/30 does just fine with 8, however.)
MIT has a good archive, as does UM. It depends on what you are looking for, Mel.
Just has 2 meg right now. I heard from the woman that previously owned it and it was obtained legally :-) its mine to play with! I may spend for a used 14.4 <cheap> and maybe bring the ram up depending on cost..but I just want a way to get a few things shareware from the net :-) I have my 486dx33 to surf the net with at 28.8 ;-)
try mirrors.aol.com in the directory pub/mac That's the free/share-ware MacMecca.
Well I stopped by mac exchange and got a LineLink 144e that came with a cable and the salesperson gave me zterm which she said was shareware.. and when I try to open the program the screen goes haywire and a wine comes out of the speaker...so I figure something isn't right memory or display wise..but don't know for sure...sigh!
But that wine sure is something! :)
Hmmm. Zterm should work on most any Mac. I have used it on a 512ke, and I had no problems. You probably have a problem with your Mac.
Could be that your copy of Zterm is corrupt. I've run it on everything form a 512 to a PB-160.
And I've run it on a PB-145B and a PowerMac.
Well, no perfect item for it, but on the way to work today I found a Mac Plus by the curb. No keyboard or mouse, but it did power up and show the "disk with a ?" icon. Wow, if I'd found this 15 years ago... it would be worth something. Anyway, looks like a fun toy to get it going again. I think I can borrow a keyboard and mouse for testing, but I may need a system disk.
Kiwanis might have a keyboard and mouse they'd deal with you on... and even a system disk, maybe...
What system do you need scott? I can make you one. I have 4.2, 6.0.8, 7.0.1 and 7.1 although 7.1 won't fit on an 800K disk. I even have a spare keybard that you can have. You'll need to come pick it up, though.
When they have them, Property Disposition has them for $1 each. They also sell the Plus CPUs for $1.
I have borrowed a system disk and a keyboard so far. I'll probably go to PD or Kiwanis for a mouse... the software I do have has absolutely no way to do anything without a mouse. This is a (apparently) 4MB Mac Plus. It even had a UM sticker on the side...
Actually, Jim, if you could assemble a system disk that would be cool. I actually like the older stuff, since it was rather simple and elegant. Maybe an older version, possibly bundled with some comm and perhaps word software? A couple years ago I was idly looking around for a classic olde Mac just because I thought the original stuff looked so nice. (and if I'd found this 15 years ago, it would have been impressive as the Mac Plus didn't come out until about 12 years ago)
Ok Do you want System 4.2, or 6.0.8? I have Zterm 1.01 as my latest Mac comm program I also have MacWrite, which is o dog, but you can have it. You need a mouse with a Mac. No getting around that.
Give him 4.2 as there is no room on a 800K floppy for 6.0.8 and an application, is there? The Plus is a lot more fun with an external SCSI HD.
I want the olde system, so 4.2. I'm not planning on doing serious work with this... :)
Hmm... no mice of the old style at Dispo. I suspect they might be kind of rare. I wonder if some kind of adapter could be used to hack in a serial mouse? How did the original Mac mice interface? So no rush on a disk, Omni. This may be a non-project.
The old interface was a DB-9. I don't think you can use a serial mouse, Mac mice are unique. Try Computer Medic on State, I bought my last one there for $35 a few yrs ago. I'll keep the disk next to the SE.
I saw a Plus mouse at PD last week for $1. I'll grab one the next time I see one. (I'm making weekly visits out there looking for file cabinets.)
Thanks, guys. I dug thru a few boxes and hampers at PD, but only found a few odd ADB mice.
Re #21:
What time of week do you usually goto PD?
Whenever I have the time and the mood strikes me. I was there yesterday right at opening time but no file cabinets (or obvious Plus mice.)
Mouse has been obtained. Kiwanis had both a mouse and a trackball! So now I need a keyboard and a system disk.
I have both. Send me some e-mail.
Wow, I have a system disk now, too. Still need a kbd. (4.2, apparently).
I'm using MacSFTP Classic on an iMac running Mac OS 9.2. This is a licensed product. I would like to change its passphrase. However I can't find the current passphrase in the application or preference files, in order to edit it. Probably, I don't have the utility for editing such things. What do I need to do this?
