How do I free up the maximum of "conventional" memory? What are the other files for? My intention is to put an end to "Insufficient memory" error messages on a system with 48MB of memory (32M Ramdisk, 16MB system).

That looks like a really old copy of QEMM, based on the file dates. Usually there is an interactive program called "optimize" that does all the work for you. Given the amount of things it does, I've never been tempted to set things up on my own.
Well, if 4DOS is in the mix (loading into UMBs) you'll need to do a bit of twiddling on your own to get (the current) QEMM to install things correctly.
