Grex Micros Item 1: The Beginning of Micros
Entered by bad on Sun Jul 28 07:50:29 UTC 1991:

Welcome to the microcomputers conference. This is a place
to discuss anything having to do with any microcomputer. Go crazy.
Try to keep the "my kind of computer is better than yours" stuff
to a minimum, though, okay? If you don't want to read the items about
other systems, please feel free to simply type "forget" after you first
see the item (at the "Respond or Pass" prompt).

I'm taking fair-witness duties upon myself for the moment, just
because I'm not sure who else should do it. Optimally, I'd like several
fairwitnesses, perhaps each having experience with/preference for different
systems.
        Any nominations?
        Preferably not yourself.
        :)

I'd like to help out.. I'm a Commodore person with some knowledge of the Mac,
IBM, and Apple. ;)

#3 of 86 by jep on Sun Jul 28 16:47:41 1991:

I'd be interested too. I'm the service manager for Dominant Systems,
and have pretty good knowledge of MS DOS, SCO Xenix/Unix, and PC's in
general.
How else are you going to find interested people if you don't accept
volunteers? (-:

#4 of 86 by jep on Mon Jul 29 02:43:52 1991:

My plea apparently worked, as both ric and I have been added as
f-w's.

#5 of 86 by tcc on Mon Sep 16 08:26:22 1991:

I'm a severe Amigazoid.

#6 of 86 by krokus on Sun Feb 2 01:22:41 1992:

I mainly use PC clones, or the CP/M machine at my aunt's.

#7 of 86 by sjg on Sun Mar 20 18:22:16 1994:

Well, this item looks kinda dead, but I'll post my query here anyway...
I'm looking for a PD communications program for an Amiga 1000. I also
need to know what type of cable it needs to connect the computer to the
modem. Sorry, I know next-to nothing about the Amiga. THanks
for any help!

Susan

#8 of 86 by omni on Sun Mar 20 23:48:04 1994:

You could check the FTP sites for such a bird...

As for the cable.. I haven't got a clue either.

#9 of 86 by kaplan on Mon Mar 21 03:27:28 1994:

Check out the usenet group comp.sys.amiga.datacomm

#10 of 86 by carl on Mon Mar 21 12:31:36 1994:

There's a gopher at cwis.unomaha.edu that specializes in Amigas.
That would be a good place to check if you have internet connections.

#11 of 86 by sarrica on Sun May 1 10:51:33 1994:

CNN reported yesterday that Commodore is closing its doors.
I wonder if someone like NewTek (the VideoToaster folks) will try to
buy all rights to the Amiga during the bankruptcy hearings...

#12 of 86 by bdp on Sun May 1 19:10:33 1994:

WHOAH! That's the first I heard of this. Amazing... shocking... odd...
Had no idea that was coming (saw it coming though :) - it would be really
neat to see a good company like NewTek revitalize the Amiga. Poor
Commodore though...

In other news, Atari (home computer division) may be on the rebound...

#13 of 86 by pegasus on Sun May 1 22:52:42 1994:

Brian,

Care to explain why you think Atari may be on the rebound? I figure Jack
should fold up the comapny since he's outlasted his competition.

#14 of 86 by bdp on Mon May 2 02:01:04 1994:

Well, the only thing they've got going for them at this point is the Lynx
(which still exists, and for which they're still creating software) and
the upcoming Jaguar. Yeah, the newest STs and Falcons/etc. are nice, but
they haven't caught on. The Jaguar, however, looks really, really promising.
It's like the 3D0, but faster and cheaper. They finally switched ad agencies
too, and Jaguar commercials are *actually* apperaing ion TV. Plus, Jaguars
are becoming more and more widespread throughout the country. If you know
the history of Atari (I *know* you do, Pattie! :) this hasn't really
happened before. Plus, their stock is rising...

Jack hasn't done a whole lot for Atari though.

#15 of 86 by scg on Mon May 2 03:08:56 1994:

What is the Jaguar? Is it a video game system or a real computer, or
something else? Even though you say its ads are appearring on TV, I've
still never heard of it.

#16 of 86 by bdp on Mon May 2 04:42:30 1994:

It's a 64-bit RISC-based Game system that sells for around $250.

#17 of 86 by pegasus on Mon May 2 20:13:07 1994:

Brian,

The Jaquar hasn't a chance, since Atari hasn't any games for it. A token
number you can get right now, with more promised for about 6months or more
now?

And, while the 3DO has more games for it, it also is being sold as a plug
in card for PCs by the people who do the soundblaster cards.

Friday's close had Atari's stock at less than $5. While that's up from 80-
some cents, it is lower than the 7+ dollars it was at before the Jaquar
was released to NYC.

                Pattie

#18 of 86 by bdp on Mon May 2 21:03:32 1994:

The 3DO is being sold as an add-on card for PCs? This is the first I've
heard of that. Technically, the Jaguar outperforms the 3DO at a much lower
price. Many of the video game magazines are also on Jaguar's side. Toys
'R' Us refuses to carry 3DO and is carrying the Jaguar (at least where
it's available :) Atari is lagging as usual, but they're not as far
behind from the original schedule they planned as they usually are.

#19 of 86 by pegasus on Tue May 3 01:24:45 1994:

Brian,

Yes. In the latest MultiMedia World magazine there's a piece on the
3DO plug-in card for PCs.

        Pattie

#20 of 86 by sarrica on Tue May 31 10:39:43 1994:

I saw the 3DO card at Comdex. Since I'm not so impressed with the 3DO,
the card wasn't that impressive to me.

I'd like to see the Jaguar do well, but the current lack of games and
Sony's upcoming game machine may cause Atari grief-- not to mention the
usual pressure from Sega and Nintendo.

#21 of 86 by tan on Wed Aug 31 23:28:52 1994:

Hello you lot. Im Ian from Canvey, UK. Just though Id let you know I thought
the jaguar was prettu crap after playing battle morph or what-ever-its called.
Still it is cheaper than the 3d0 but thats not always best! Anyway, goto go,
(Dont bother trying to reply, im only at this uni. for a week and will be gone
be the time you read this). Good hearing fellow micro-nuts though. See ya!

 Hi there!

I have assumed the duites of F-w, and I am looking for suggestions,
comments, and /or a co-fw to make the job a litlle easier, If you never
have been a f-w, then this would be a perfect opportunity for you to
learn about what the job entails. Mail me or popcorn if you're interested.

#23 of 86 by jep on Sun Oct 2 05:36:07 1994:

Put your name in the login file, omni.
Also, due to the long time since there's been any activity here, I'd
suggest a restart.

#24 of 86 by rcurl on Sun Oct 2 06:24:34 1994:

No, not a restart! This is a gold mine of information about computers,
(many obsolete, but still....). I think it may need just a housecleaning.

#25 of 86 by omni on Sun Oct 2 19:23:08 1994:

I concur with Rane. Too much info is here to restart it, but I will clean
as soon as possibl And I'll get around to changing the .login screen, too.

#26 of 86 by omni on Tue Oct 4 04:01:08 1994:

I would like to welcome John Shafer as co-fw. Hope that you learn something
John!!!

 Cleaning will commence soon.

#27 of 86 by jshafer on Sun Oct 9 04:51:39 1994:

Thank you, omni. Sorry I won't be much help until the link
goes back up...

I have a sound blaster and a Sony CDU-31A Cd-ROM Drive. Does anybody know the
exact audio to connect the Sound Blaster Pro and the Sony CD-ROM drive to
connect each other internally?

#32 of 86 by twinkie on Mon Oct 30 07:48:14 1995:

You'll need to buy an adapter to get a Sony CD-ROM to work with a Sound
Blaster Pro. It costs about $13 at CompUSA.

#33 of 86 by omni on Mon Mar 24 04:25:30 1997:

I have taken the liberty of changing the login screen. I would appreciate
feedback from the members of this conference.

               Thanks

#34 of 86 by arshad on Mon Apr 28 05:16:07 1997:

what is AMIGA I did'nt get that?

#35 of 86 by font on Wed Apr 1 07:53:50 1998:

An "Amiga" is a Commidore Computer. You probably haven't seen them in India,
but they are (er...were) in the US...more commonly in europe (so I've heard).
They had a pretty sweet setup...but since I haven't worked on them since 1990
I can't tell you much, other than they had a nice GUI interface that <gasp!>
*wasn't* moted by IBM. (as far as I know) All I can tell you is that I miss
them. They were best at graphics...if you have ever heard of the Video
Toaster that not only runs on an amiga computer but it *is* an amiga computer.
(Developed the first season of Babalon 5...too)

Helo
 hello to all again.
I want to know if two XT mchines can be used or modified for work together
as one . I mean i want to make a project in parallelism . Anyone know where
cai, can i get information?? It can be funny. Any infomation about qIntel
information -- motherboards, proccessors, buses and devices wil l be very
intesresant. I hate my keyboard, so any infomation about changing the config
of a QWWERTY keyboard is wellcommed .

#37 of 86 by davel on Fri Jun 12 17:06:36 1998:

I agree. Those two W keys together would drive me nuts, too.

#38 of 86 by arthurp on Mon Jun 15 23:34:16 1998:

Hmm. The least invasive way to link the two machines would be with a
device that plugs into both ISA buses. Unfortunately I think this would
introduce too much delay and noise into the bus to make it work. If it
did work, though, both machines could then access the 'card' for
communication. You'd have to write your own OS for it. You're talking
about a pretty big job. Using an 80186 to make a tiny 'system' with no
peripherals on an ISA card would be an easier way to work on a
parallelism project.

I am once again looking for an able person to help with fairwitness duties.

Anyone who is interested, reply here.
