How's about this one... fundraising.... the old standby.... no pressure to become a member, just give us your money.... I suggested one in the first item, but I don't know what happend to it...

Good idea -- but fundraisers work best when they're either for a specific purpose or have a theme 9like the recent auction.) What are the funds for, specifically?
Past fundraising efforts (excluding membership) that I can think of have included JCC sales, asking for money for a new hard disk, JanC's matching pledge (up to $250) to upgrade modems, the recent auction, and Grex T-Shirt and coffee mug sales. Snafu had suggested something like a frisbee-golf tournament as a fundraiser in item 1. Things like that are always welcome, if someone has the inclination to organize it, and there are enough Grexers interested in it. Posting a suggestion in the Agora conference is probably a good way to guage whether enough people are interested or not. I don't think anybody has tried charging a fee to participate in a Grex- organized event. I would guess that things that are ordinarily free (like playing frisbee-golf in a public park) wouldn't be too successful with a fee. But you could probably tack some profit on events that ordinarily cost something, like playing on a golf course, or playing Whirleyball.
Playing at hudson mills costs a little.... Also, with prizes, mayhaps we'd get people... who knows... I'll post something in agora...
The frisbee gold tournament could be a good idea. If you get enough people, you could perhaps do a 50-50 kind of thing. 50% of the proceeds go towards prize money, 50% go to Grex.
Like I said in agora, we have free membership as some of the prizes, and that doesn't cost much... just time.... and process speed... mugs & shirts, not a lot of those unless you get lot's o' people... we'd have to get a list of people BEFORE we take money and/or get prizes that cost money.... if we get lots o' prizes and no on comes... we're screwed..
No, according to the bylaws *someone* has to pay for those memberships. I agree that having a list of entrant before getting the tangible prizes is a good move -- unless the T-shirt and mug prizes are from current stock. (If we have one.)
One-month grex memberships, at $6, would be relatively cheap prizes, and could be paid for out of entrance fees. I think mugs are also $6. I don't think Grex has any T-shirts in stock, and printing them costs a fair amount in small quantities. Since buying memberships is almost the same as donating money to Grex, I'd use whatever excess money you raise to buy memberships. In other words, rather than use half the profits for prizes and half to donate to Grex, use it all for prizes, with some of the prizes being one-month Grex memberships.
could do that.....
