Grex Language Item 80: Six Letter Word Game (5th Edition)
Entered by rcurl on Sat Sep 7 03:05:58 UTC 1996:

In the Six Letter Word Game a person thinks of a six letter word and
others try to deduce what it is from the responses to guessed words. The
response numbers are the number of letters that match letters in the
hidden word including with respect to place. The full rules are in
/u/rcurl/lettermatch.rules (written for a five letter verson, also being
played in another itme).

As the game proceeds a list of words guessed and their "scores" is usually
available in a file. The person that guesses the word correctly (score =
6) gets to choose the next word to be played.

The 4th Edition (in item #70) has been discontinued because 1026 responses
creates a bit of a lag in the game.

#4 of 594 by signet on Wed Sep 11 13:43:58 1996:

how about "crikey" from the previous game, can we assume that is 0?

#5 of 594 by rcurl on Wed Sep 11 15:44:34 1996:

Some players started giving the count for the last word w.r.t to their
new word. I haven't adopted that practice. For those that do do it - the count
has *always* been 0 - funny, isn't it?

#6 of 594 by kentn on Mon Sep 23 22:29:30 1996:

Very funny :) Can we assume that crikey is a 0 then? Only one way to find
out for sure...I'll guess...hmmm...let me think...

Whoops - something weird happened on #7. "Crikey" was there when I entered
the response. So, again:

#19 of 594 by kentn on Fri Sep 27 02:03:58 1996:

I think we need that link to the games/iq cf. I've asked the fw
there to do so, but have not heard back (that'd be carson).

And, yup, found tithal in the OED.

Hmmm...there seem to be only three of us playing. Its still fun, but its
funner with more joining in - and it goes faster. This is a great game for
car travel with three or more, though, so let's just imagine we are travelling
somewhere together - and trying to keep the driver awake.

#35 of 594 by kentn on Wed Oct 9 03:28:56 1996:

Kinda hard to drive when you're reading a dictionary :) Figured
that one had something to do with laminations or layers (but not hens),
and so it does. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how much
information you can surmise):

lamina 0 (rcurl)

Still haven't heard back on the link request to the iq cf, where we
might find a few more players. Maybe I'll try again.

#36 of 594 by rcurl on Wed Oct 9 04:22:12 1996:

When playing it when driving not only does no one have a dictionary, they may
not write down the guesses and counts!

#37 of 594 by kentn on Thu Oct 10 02:59:16 1996:

But then, we wouldn't be playing *six* letter word game, either...or
would we?

#38 of 594 by rcurl on Thu Oct 10 06:52:10 1996:

That's right - five letters is (more than) sufficient, when its all mental.

#39 of 594 by signet on Thu Oct 10 19:35:10 1996:

okay I'm here as #3 (of course)
perhaps we should allow more than one quess for awhile with just 2 of us
guessing--how about you can enter another response as long as the game runner
has responded to your first one?
BTW: where are you two for item 67? It's a ghost town there!
