Grex Language Item 41: Language conference co-fw desired
Entered by griz on Wed Jun 9 21:30:16 UTC 1993:

Ah, this conference certainly has prospered in my absence! Thanks to
all of you who've helped keep it active.

Since I don't have a whole lot of time to spend on Grex, though, I'd
like to ask if anyone here would like to join me in fairwitnessing this
conference. Ty Zucker hasn't been a user here for about a year now, and
I'm tired of doing it alone.

Let me know if you're interested in helping out. No experience necessary!

23 responses total.

What do you do?

#2 of 23 by griz on Thu Jun 10 14:37:31 1993:

What do *I* do? I'm a graduate student in Germanic linguistics, and I
teach German ... but I suppose you want to know what I do as a fw, right?
;-)

Well, you try to encourage discussion, you can change the login and logout
messages, you kill items when they get too old and enter new ones --
basically manage the conference.

#3 of 23 by rcurl on Thu Jun 10 14:49:44 1993:

Right ;-). The funny thing is, I haven't *noticed* fws doing anything
in most of the conferences, except maybe for changing prompts, or getting
into trouble for doing something more. Someone suggested that I might be
interested in responding to your inquiry, but I think I would be out of
my league - I have only a modicum of fluency in English. I learned to
speak Dutch once, but could never solve their crossword puzzles, so I
"flunked". Good luck.

Actually, an interest in language would be the only requirement. My
interest also happens to be reflected in my career, but that isn't
necessary.

Do it, Rane. I think you'd make a good f-w.

#6 of 23 by rcurl on Fri Jun 11 06:37:34 1993:

I don't know. I wouldn't want to use up my allocated 15 minutes of fame,
just yet. What does a "good" f-w do? Well, I guess I asked that (but
still don't see). OK. Sign me up. On the road to peridition....

Jennie, maybe we should talk about having you continue Staci's German lessons.
On of the boys in her Kindergarden class has a German mother. She has been
coming in on Wednesdays and teaching the class some basic German. Staci loves
it and says uses danke, bitte and guten tag all the time. She keeps having
STeve help her with counting to 10 (she can pick it up around 5 and go to 10
with no trouble but has a bit of problem with 1-4).

Eins, zwei, drei, vier....there,I did it! Everyone please note that I
agreed to be a fair-witness for this conference at 2:37 a.m., so you know
that you cannot count upon me to be sensible and reliable. Actually, I
have never noticed a fair-witness *doing* anything on a conference, except
resign, so I am not sure of my duties, and will assume it is a titular
post. By the way, if you want to vote me out of office, that is your
perogative. However, as an after-the-fact campaign statement, I will say
that I am what is glibly called fluent in English; speak Dutch when
needed in emergencies (but can't do Dutch crossword puzzles); studied
German 3 years, but that was 44 years ago (Mein Gott in Himmel!); can
mostly read scientific French (since its mostly English with an accent);
can crudely vocalize cyrillic (which is useful, since a lot of *that* is
English too; and also know dah dah dah dah dah dit dah dit dit dit dit
dit dah dit dah dit dah dah dah dah dit dit dit
dit dah dit dah dit dah.

Well, if you're interested enough to participate, I'm sure you'll be
a fine fw. I'll get back to you about the details *after* the M-Net
party. Pant, pant ...

Um. *Is* there a Morse Code item yet? (ssf)

#12 of 23 by rcurl on Sat Jun 12 06:37:51 1993:

I was thinking of creating one *after* figuring out how to code it
in ascii - or even have a translator to encode it, and then play it
back as code. But all that is way beyond my capabilities. Want to give
it a try? (What's (ssf)?)

dit dit dit dit dit dit dit dit dah dit [or] ... ... .._. [whichever]

Um. Rane, when you get that translation program written, make sure it
works *both ways*.

set drift=OFF
My turn to say "thank you" for agreeing to be FW, Rane.

I am announcing that I just exercised my first action as a fairwitness
to this conference, by linking item 3 from agora into it (by
popular demand ;-)). Now, I would like to know if *anyone* sees it here,
but not in agora? That is, is the link redundant? (The item, of course,
is very much "language", and here is its natural home, but no one is, I
am sure, "possessive">)

#18 of 23 by davel on Fri Jun 25 10:30:41 1993:

As soon as I really see for myself that it is here, & get back to agora,
(and remember (sf)), I shall FORGET it there. Agoras come and agoras go,
and all that.

#19 of 23 by rcurl on Fri Jun 25 14:55:26 1993:

I had forgotten FORGET - even though it is an CONFER option (but they
list it in their prompt - sort of a hint, I suspect). I guess I don't
need to see all the existing linked items twice, like I've been doing.

#20 of 23 by davel on Fri Jun 25 20:44:31 1993:

Just make sure you don't FORGET them all (unless you want to, of course!).

#21 of 23 by griz on Tue Jun 29 17:39:22 1993:

Congratulations, rcurl! That's just the kind of thing I'd hope you'd do.
You can also change the login and logout messages, if you want, by typing
"set login" and "set logout". And enter lots of neat items.

#22 of 23 by rcurl on Wed Jun 30 03:34:27 1993:

Thanks. The login and logout and just fine, I think. I'm trying to think
of something new to start - but not much success. Hey, everyone, how about
some new neat *language* items?

#23 of 23 by aa8ij on Tue Jul 27 07:33:35 1993:

Morse Code??? what in hell is *that* ;-)
