A thank-you-for-a-contribution letter arrived today from the National
Committee for an Effective Congress (NCEC). The following paragraph was in
the letter:

  "Whatever the political climate, the NCEC will turn every stone to
  defeat right wing extremist candidates at the polls."

I have invented the term "stirred metaphor" for a common metaphor that
is changed in some fashion from the conventional form.
